First Baptist Church, State Line, MS

One of the earliest settlers in the State Line area was Colonel Gaines. He settled there long before the Civil War to negotiate a treaty with the Indians. He later returned and built a home and a nursery on his plantation. The people of State Line and the church are proud of this part of their history.

The first known religious service ever held in State Line was in 1872. This service was conducted on the first floor of what was known as the Old Masonic Building. This service led to the establishment of a Primitive Baptist Church, led by Rev. Wilson West. In 1874, Rev. O. D. Bowen preached a four week revival in which 82 people were saved and united with the church. He was later called as pastor and led the church to become a Southern Baptist Church.

The present Pastor of First Baptist Church is Rev. Marvin "Bo" Farrior He has been pastor for the last five years. He lives in the Pastor’s home, located near the church. Rev Farrior states that the church has recently completed a renovation of the inside of the Sanctuary. This remodeling includes new pews, stain glass windows, wall paper and carpet.

The church, although located in Greene County, has historically been associated with the churches of Wayne County. The county line, between Greene and Wayne Counties, comes through the center of State Line.

First Baptist Church has a membership of 190 and Sunday School enrollment of 98. Their schedule is: Sunday School at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., with Discipleship Training at 6 p.m. and Evening Worship at 7 p.m. Prayer Meeting Services are on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

The church enrolled 91 in Vacation Bible School this year with an average attendance of 84. Homecoming was held this past year on June 1.

The church has a youth group led by Ron Kittrell. Their active Deacons are: Tom Culpepper, James Waller, and Nigel Lee.

 

First Baptist Church is located on Highway 42 West, or 250 St. Peters Street, in State Line.
