FELLOWSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH
The Fellowship Baptist Church, located at 10858 Old Avera Road, has a rich history. It was established about 1860. The church was begun with the help of an old Irish preacher named Charlie Baine. Rev. Baine preached all around the country, coming to this area encouraging the early settlers to start churches. With his assistance, five men agreed to help start the church. They were Rev. Robert (Bob) Prine, who became the first pastor, and came from old Enon Church; John McDonald, who was the Clerk, also came from old Enon; Lewis Ezell, who was the first Deacon; and Melvin Purvis and William (Billy) Neel, Sr. Five male members were required, in those days, to start a new church.
They met first in a log schoolhouse that stood at the top of the hill just north of the present church building. As soon as possible, they built a log church where the present church now stands. The church met on the second Sunday of the month, and their first song book was "Dossey’s Choice". Lewis Ezell, Sr. is believed to have led the singing. Rev. Charlie Baine made several trips back to Ireland during his lifetime but died in the Pisgah area.
The first frame building was built around 1912, just below the log church, and the carpenter was Dean Turner. All of the men of the community pitched in to help. Some hauled lumber from the Bear Creek Lumber Company, near Leakesville, with ox teams. Some of the ones helping were: C. P. Smith, Billy Neel, Edgar Coaker, John Turner, Curtis and Roy Kittrell, Oscar Smith, J. A. Kittrell and Joe Kittrell.
Another building was constructed in 1942 while Rev. W. E. Stewart was Pastor. It was built in place of the original log church, using some of the lumber from the old teachers’ home and school that stood nearby.
In 1951, when Rev. J. E. Gooch was pastor, during a revival meeting, in which Rev. Joe. H. Cothen was preaching and James T. Dunnam was leading the singing, the church voted to go full-time. The church has held worship services continuously since it began, and has had many capable and dedicated members and pastors. Much of the early information came from the personal knowledge and research of Mrs.Eva K. Dunnam.
In recent years, the church has been bricked, stained glass windows installed, a steeple added, fellowship hall now under construction, and the parking lot paved.
Sunday School meets each Sunday at 10 A.M. with the Worship service at 11 A.M. The church has 75 members, and they are presently seeking a pastor. David Dearman directs the Adult Choir and the worship music. They also have a Children’s Choir.
