FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF LEAKESVILLE

This Southern Baptist Church is located in downtown Leakesville at 434 Oak Street. It was established in 1905 with ten charter members and has grown to approximately 300 members. Church facilities include a beautiful sanctuary, ample parking, nursery, age appropriate Sunday School classrooms, a parsonage and additional residence for the Youth Director.

For the first five years of the church’s life, it met in the local Methodist Church building, since the first church building was not completed and occupied until 1910. There have been twenty-five pastors, including the present pastor, Rev. Mack C. Strange, who has been with the church since 1998. Each pastor has made his contribution to the progress of the church and has left his imprint upon the church family and community with their dedicated leadership.

In 1974, Rev. Horace Glass moved to Leakesville and joined First Baptist Church. He became the first Director of Missions for Greene and George Counties.

First Baptist Church has an excellent Adult Choir and music program under the direction of Mr. Charles L. Bufkin, Jr., Minister of Music. They not only provide music for the worship services but also present Christmas and Easter Cantatas and other musical productions.

There is a 60 PLUS Club for Seniors. It meets monthly for lunch and a program. Occasional tours are also planned.

The times for the regular Sunday services are: Sunday School 9:30 A.M., Morning Worship 10:30 A.M. (Children’s Church is also a part of the morning service); Evening Worship is at 6:00 P.M.

Wednesday evening Prayer Service is at 6:30 P.M. Youth Activities also meet at this time and are led by a 3 couple team of volunteers. They have a complete youth program of activities, both on and off the church premises.

Other annual church events for children are Vacation Bible School each summer and a Fall Festival every October.

Since the organization of First Baptist Church, many people have played an important part in the life of the church. They are a congregation of people who love God, desire spiritual growth, and pray for progress for God’s Kingdom within their church family and in the Leakesville area where they are located. An open door is extended to the community. The church office telephone number is (601) 394-5124.
