Notes for BENJAMIN ELSWORTH GREEN:
Notes by Brenda Shattles/Forhlmeister
Was a self-made businessman. He dropped out of school after the sixth grade, but was an avid reader and had a head for math. He attend Soule Business College in New Orleans. He eventually owned 5 sawmills in south Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida. At his peak ,he owned/managed over 18,000 acres in timber and mineral rights. He and his business partner, Joe Daughdrill, managed the mills at Colgreen, Greene, Mississippi.
At the mill at "Benjoe" (railroad stop at Colgreen), he had a commissary for his workers. He used his own money (legal if you had the cash in the bank to cover it), called it "Benjoe Money", to be used in the commissary. I still have some "Benjoe" money.
He was a firm believer in higher education, being a Trustee of numerous colleges including: Blue Mountain Girl's School, Mississippi Women's College (now William Carey College) in Hattiesburg. MS, and the University of Mississippi. He supported numerous theological students at the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans.
He was responsible for building the negroe school at Royce, Mississippi, and donated a substanial sum toward the McLain Baptist Church ( there is a plaque in the foyer).
Green Science Hall at William Carey College, Hattiesburg, MS, is named in his memory.
