Calvary Baptist Church
The first Sunday morning worship service of Calvary Baptist Church was held on Sunday, October 6, 1996, with 38 present. Bro. Preston M. Cochran, former pastor of Buffalo Baptist Church for 16 years, was the missionary pastor. The mission that became the Calvary Baptist Church was sponsored the Buffalo Baptist Church.
Prayer Meetings were held in the area and preceded the organization of the mission church. The first sermon was brought by Rev. Rayborn Freeman. The music was led by Morris Courtney and David Freeman. Hazel Courtney and Betty Cochran Turner were the pianists. In the first service, Mildred Stockstill, Fredna West, Dawn Freeman and Sam Freeman joined by letter.
In the Summer of 1996, five acres of land was purchased from the Greene County Board of Supervisors, that had included the old Denmark Industries factory building. Volunteer workers from five states came to help begin the church building. Zell Cooley was elected Treasurer, and Mildred Stockstill the Church Clerk.
On January 11, 1998, Bro. Greg Hillman surrendered to preach, and the Mission Church voted to license him. On April 10 1998, the mission church, with 87 present, was organized into a church. Bro. Greg Hillman was called as pastor and ordained on April 18, 1998. There were 51 charter members.
During the church year of 2002-2003, there were 15 baptisms. At the beginning of the new church year 2003, there were 110 members. Bro. Greg Hillman is Pastor; Billy Simpson, Deacon; Mildred Stockstill, Clerk; and Terri Denmark, Treasurer. Billy Simpson is Sunday School Superintendent and Song Director. Later last year, Annell Walley became Treasurer, after the resignation of Terri Denmark. Bro. Greg Hillman continues his education at Southeastern Baptist College, Laurel, MS.
The Washington Association met this past years at Calvary Baptist Church. The Calvary Baptist Church is a member of the Washington Association of the BMA.
Services are: Sunday School 9:45 am with Morning Worship 10:50 am. Sunday Evening service is at 5 pm and Wednesday at 7 pm Visitors are cordially welcomed.
