BUFFALO MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
Buffalo Missionary Baptist Church is affiliated with BMA, or Baptist Missionary Association. Rev. Milford Magers is serving as Interim Pastor until a full-time Pastor is called.
The church has an interesting history. It was begun in 1936 when community members, seeing the need for a church, met in homes. In order to get money for a building, the ladies quilted and did various other community projects to raise money. Land was finally given and deeded to the church in 1941 for a church site. A church building was erected for approximately $180.00. The congregation met in this building until 1945 when it became a Missionary Baptist Church.
During a period of time in the 1960’s, regular services at the church were ceased, and visiting ministers conducted services in members’ homes. Regular services were resumed at the church in 1974; and, with many efforts, a new building was completed in 1977.
The church membership is around 135, with an average attendance of 40 or 50. The times of regular services are: Sunday: Sunday School 10:00 with morning worship at 11:00. Sunday night service is at 6:00, and Wednesday Prayer and Bible Study is at 7:00.
Youth activities include a Wednesday Youth Class, monthly Associational meetings, and yearly encampments and retreats. There is also a Vacation Bible School every summer for the children.
An outstanding feature of this church is that it was the Mother Church of Calvary Baptist Church and sponsored it as a mission. Some members went out there to help get it started, and it is a thriving church today.
Buffalo Baptist has had some notable events recently. They had a successful Men’s Day in January, and had many men and youth to participate. (A picture of this was recently in the Herald.) They also had a churchwide Valentine Fellowship in February, and an annual Ladies Retreat/Luncheon is being planned for March. A Spring Revival is also planned for March.
Visitors are always welcome at Buffalo Baptist, and the church members are optimistic regarding a bright future for the church as they serve the Lord. The church is located at 1456 Buffalo Road, McLain.
