Avera Church of God

The Avera Church of God is located on Highway 63 in Avera Community. Rev. Jarrell Walley has been the pastor for the last ten years. Rev. Junior Sullivan, a former pastor of the church, now retired, is an active member of the church and is very helpful to the pastor and congregation. The church was begun in the 1930’s.

Sundra Walley, the pastor’s wife, serves along with him, as well as caring for her mother who is not well. Their son, James Walley, serves the church as Youth Pastor. Jennifer, the wife of James, assists him in working with the youth. Once a month they lead the youth to assume leadership responsibilities of the church.

The Sunday School Director is Bro. Herbert West. Attendance in Sunday School averages about 35. There are approximately 50 members of the Avera Church of God. Bro. Elroy Kelley is the adult teacher.

One of the ministries of the Church, for the last five years, has been their food bank. They have provided food for many families in Greene County. Over $500.00 a month was required to provide this ministry. They sadly and reluctantly had to give up this program because they were no longer able to provide workers and funds to do so.

Rev. Walley, in addition to his pastoral duties, works full-time for a chemical company in Bucks, Alabama. He works twelve hours a day four days a week.

The church has Sunday School at 10 a.m., Morning Worship at 11 a.m., and Evening Worship at 6 p.m.

On October 5, 2003, the church will observe Homecoming Day, with dinner on the grounds and singing in the afternoon.

Visitors are always welcome to attend any services of the church.
