George Bretträger was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1945 to Andrew Michael Brettrager and Marguerite Dorothea Klug. He is a descendant of Christoph and Anna Sophia Bretträger (paternal grandfather's side) and Johann Georg and Elisabeth (née Schnetter) Reingruber (paternal grandmother's side). Both families originally settled in Glogowatz and moved to Neupanat in the early 1800s. His maternal grandparents' families (Klug and Kronenburger) immigrated to the United States from Germany.

He grew up in Cook County, Illinois (Chicago and Niles) and graduated from Maine Township High School East in Park Ridge, Illinois. He attended the University of Missouri, Columbia and Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He received Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science degrees in Engineering from Southern Illinois University. He is a civil engineer specializing in water supply.

In 1995, George Bretträger visited Neupanat. He translated Dr. Hans Gehl's Heimatbuch Glogowatz in 2004, Gedenkblätter zur 150-jährigen Jubelfeier der Pfarrgemeinde Panatulnou (Neupanat) 1787-1937 in 2005, and other documents and articles relevant to the history of Glogowatz and Neupanat.

This online English edition of the Commemorative Pages to mark the 150 Year Jubilee of the Parish Panatulnou (Neupanat) 1787-1937 is from George Bretträger's aforementioned 2005 translation. To view the original German edition of the book, click here.

In May 2005, George Bretträger attended the Glogowatzer Heimattreffen in Gersthofen, Germany. In September 2005, he attended the Neupanater Kirchweihfest in Rastatt, Germany.

He is looking for copies of Historia Domus Neupanat and Heimatbuch Neupanat to translate.
