This is the first building on the block going north to south. When this row of buildings was constructed they were known as the brick block. There was some advertising in the Newton Messenger paper that would give their address as a certain number in the brick block. I have not found to date how the numbering system went. Maybe one day I will stumble across it.
The building is owned now by Howard Hanners. After talking with Howard and some other folks in town we have come up with a list of previous owners and/or merchants. They are listed but not necesarily in the order in which they owned the store. For the most part this has been a food service store of some kind. Owners or merchants were Benjamin Patrick Adcock, Elgin McLaney, Frank Helms, P.L. Collier, Bat Dossett, Willie Woodall, Ellis Trawick, Albert Trawick, Nancy Hanners, George Sayles, and Carl Hamilton. The Newton Rescue Mission was in the building when this picture was taken, but, in 2005 they moved south to where the old Gulf Truck Stop used to be.
