The Battle of Newton was held during the weekend of October 23-24. The Newton Home Guards were assisted by several units in the area in putting down the advance made by the Federals on the Town of Newton. Our thanks goes out to all of the units who participated in this event. There are too many to name in this paragraph but folks came from Florida, Georgia, Virginia and Alabama.
The actual Battle of Newton took place right downtown. According to the history that has been found, the actual battle itself probably only took 5-10 minutes to take place. The small band of Home Guards successfully defeated the band of renegades who were enroute to pilferage and burn the Dale County Courthouse which was located in Newton at the time.
