NASHVILLE HISTORY

MILL CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH GRAVEYARD

Mill Creek Cemetery is located at the corner of Dodge Drive and Old Glenrose in Nashville. The cemetery grew around Mill Creek Baptist Church, which was organized in 1795 by the Menees and Whitsitt families. The first church services were held in the Menees's home and also in member's homes. In 1797 a log house was erected for services. Membership grew and in 1810 a larger, brick meeting house was built at the present site of Mill Creek Cemetery.

Mr. James Whitsitt, son-in-law of Mr. James Menees, was one of the first pastors at Mill Creek Baptist Church. A number of Baptist Churches grew from Mill Creek's mission work. These include Antioch, First Church, Nashville, Grandview, Concord, Rock Springs, and Providence. The State Baptist Convention was organized at Mill Creek in 1833 and the church prospered until the early 1900's. As the area grew the need for a more accessible church may have contributed to the closing of Mill Creek. The building was dismantled in the mid 1900's.

Old-timers tell of horse and wagon processions to services at Mill Creek Cemetery. Some say cattle grazed the property in later years. Some tell of swimming in nearby Mill Creek amid tombstones which were scattered on the banks and in the creek.

Today, nothing remains of the old church. The site contains approximately 150 known and several unknown graves of early settlers, pioneers, and slaves. Unfortunately, many of the markers have fallen and have been vandalized.

This list has been compiled from several sources. These include Davidson County, TN Death Records & Tombstone Inscriptions by Richard C. Fulcher, 1979 and Mill Creek Baptist Church Graveyard by Albert and Edythe R. Whitley, 1929. Other researchers who have recorded lists of the cemetery include Jeff and Linda Therber, from a site inspection in 1988 and Janie Ridley Bice, from site inspections in 1992-1996. Due to the span in years of these documents and subsequent vandalizing of stones, discrepancies do exist. Genealogical research on the Ridley-Everett-Buchanan families substantiates many of the names and dates of these families but does not always coincide with earlier research. The oldest burial date appears to be 1813 and the earliest documented birth date appears to be 1737. According to Whitley's research in 1929 there were, at that time, some hundred graves with no markings. Among these are some rock slabs which are standing but have no means of identification. This is one of the largest of the old cemeteries in Middle Tennessee as stated by the Whitleys, so it is possible as many as 240 gravesites exist.

List of known persons buried at Mill Creek Cemetery:
Where information is not given or it is unclear a (?) is used. An asterisk (*) is used for wooden or stone markers. Birth dates and death dates are given in that order. Several members of the Whitsett family are in one plot surrounded by a rock wall and a rock wall surrounds many members of the Ridley, Everett, and Buchanan families. Other graves are situated throughout the cemetery area. This list will identify graves in alphabetical order.
