In the 1960's the William Dennison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Mercer County walked down cemeteries in Mercer County and recorded information on remaining tombstones. Note that many errors occurred due to difficulty in reading old stones and in transcribing field notes. The notes below refer to the DAR volumes and page numbers and the notes as transcribed by the DAR. You will also find current readings of tombstones on Findagrave. Due to errors in both cases you may find conflicting information in these two sources. Vol 3, page 20This is a description of the Leech Cemetery monument:"This monument is erected to the memory of Dr. William D. Pomroy of Davenport, Iowa, the members of his family and his many relatives and friends who rest here. It was erected in the year 1943 and presented to the Leech Cemetery Association from a special fund of $3,000 bequeathed by him for its erection and the general beautification of the cemetery. The first burial on these grounds was that of an unknown child who passed away in an immigrant wagon and was laid to rest here. Shortly thereafter on Oct 2nd 1846, Virginia Leech, infant daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth died and was interred here beside the little unknown. Thereafter they reserved this one acre from their farm for cemetery purposes. "Dr. William B. Pomroy was reared in this community and always took a great interest in the care of this cemetery and made provision in his will not only for care but beautification of these grounds." William H.
