1850, 9 April - Mary was born in Melbourne, Victoria. She was also known as Polly.

1852c - The family moved to NSW. When Mary was young she worked in a large store in Forbes, NSW, and lived with her family.

Walter James Ingrey

Walter was born 13th August 1838 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire, England, to John Ingrey, a miller, and Louisa Edwards. He sailed from England 11th November 1856 on “Gilmore” and landed 6th June 1857. After arriving in Australia he went to Queensland in 1859. He then went to Adelong, NSW, as a miner. He took up cattle dealing and went to Grenfell, NSW, soon after the rush in 1866. He took up “Spring Grove” on Bimbi Road, Grenfell.

1872, 15 February - Mary married Walter James Ingrey at Holy Trinity Church of England, Grenfell, NSW, when she was 22. Walter was 33 and a butcher at the time. The minister was Joseph Dark and the witnesses were James Gibson and Esther Millen. It was the first marriage for both.

1873 - They had John E. Ingrey when she was 23.

1874 - They had a boy at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 24 but he was stillborn.

1875, November - They had Esther Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 25.

1878 - They had Eleanor Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 28.

1880, 4 May - Their daughter, Esther Ingrey, died at Grenfell aged 4years 6 months. Mary was 30 at the time. The cause of death was “malignant sore throat” which she had for 4 weeks. Her doctor, Dr Stride, saw her the day before she died. The informant was her uncle, Charles John Ingrey. She was buried next day in the Church of England cemetery, Grenfell, by Rev F.S. Wilson. Walter was listed as a farmer. Her headstone reads:-

1880 - They had Walter William Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 30.

1883, May - They had Charles Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 33.

1883, 15 October - Their son, Charles Ingrey, died at Grenfell, NSW, aged 5 months and was buried in the Church of England cemetery, Grenfell, NSW. Mary was aged 33. His headstone reads:-

1884 - They had Thomas George Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 34.

1880's - Walter and Mary founded a sheep stud on Bungaree blood at “ Spring Grove” on Bimbi Road, Grenfell.

1885 - Her husband, Walter, is listed on the Return of Stockowners as having a property called “Spring Grove” at Parkes of 1700 acres holding 14 horses, 14 cattle, 2000 sheep and 5 pigs.

1887 - They had James Edwards Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 37.

1890 - They had Annie Bell Ingrey at Grenfell, NSW, when she was 40.

1902 - Her husband, Walter, is listed as an eligible voter on the Forbes Rabbit Board with two votes. His address was Grenfell.

1908 - Walter handed control of his property to his son, Walter William Ingrey, and in that year Walter William Ingrey and Thomas George Ingrey split the property with Thomas taking part of “Spring Grove” and Walter taking the other part which he called “Yarra Glen”.

1908 - Mary and her sons were eligible voters on the Pastures Protection Board with one vote. Her address was “Spring Grove”, Grenfell.

1916, 10 May - Her husband, Walter James Ingrey, died at Grenfell, NSW, aged 77. He was listed as a farmer. He was survived by his wife, Mary 66, and children, John 43, Eleanor 38, Walter 34, Thomas 31, James 29 and Annie 26. The informant was his son, J. Ingrey of 24 Walker Avenue, Haberfield, NSW. The cause of death was “myocarditis and asthenia, senility”. He was buried next day in the Presbyterian cemetery at Grenfell, NSW. His headstone says:-

13th Aug 1838

Died at Grenfell 10th may 1916

Long days and nights he bore in pain

to wait for cure was all in vain

but God above, who thought it best

did ease his pain and give him rest

After her husband died Mary moved into Grenfell township to live with her daughter, Annie Penrose, as provided in her husband's will.

1927, 17 September - The following appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald Saturday:-

Amos - September 15 at her residence, 15 Edmund Street, Waverley, Ann, widow of the late Richard Amos, and dearly loved mother of Thelma, Ernest and Dorothy, aged 54 years.

Amos - The friends of Mrs M. Ingrey and family, Mr A. Genge and family, Mr and Mrs W.A. Millen and family, Mrs J. Davis and family, Mr and Mrs John Sawyer and family, Mr and Mrs James Sawyer and family and of Mrs E. Donovan and family are kindly invited to attend the funeral of their dearly loved sister and aunt, Ann, to leave 15 Edmund Street, Waverley, this (Saturday) morning at 10:15 for Waverley Cemetery.

Sawyer - The friends of Mrs E. Ingrey of Grenfell, Mr and Mrs W. Millen and family of Thirroul, Mrs T. Davis and family of Croydon, Mr and Mrs J. Sawyer and family of Orange, Mrs E. Donovan and family of Paddington and of Mrs B. Munday and family of Pyrmont are kindly invited to attend the funeral of their dearly loved brother, brother-in-law and uncle, John, to leave 34 Dudley Street, Paddington this day, Wednesday, at 12:45 for Rookwood.

1935, 3 February - Mary died at “The Balconies” , Bondi Road, Bondi, NSW, aged 85. She was survived by her children, John 62, Nellie (Eleanor) 56, Walter 54, Thomas 50, James 48 and Annie 44. The informant was her son, John Ingrey, of 29 Fairweather Street, Bellevue Hill, NSW. The cause of death was “chronic myocarditis, senility”. Mary was a very smart upstanding woman and liked to be well-dressed. She was on holidays at Bondi with her daughter, Eleanor, and went into the city to buy a new hat. She died suddenly that night. The death was registered at Waverley, NSW.

1935, 5 February - She was buried in the Church of England cemetery at Grenfell, NSW, with Norman G.F. Cooke, Church of England minister, officiating. Her headstone reads:-

Agnes Millen Watson (nee Ingrey) remembers that Mary was not an affectionate woman but Agnes had a lot of respect for her. Whenever she visited her children she always took sausages which were a real luxury for them.

Also in the Church of England cemetery at Grenfell is a grave for a Louisa Ingrey which shares the headstone of Esther and Charles Ingrey. It can't be Walter's mother as he was born 1838 The headstone reads:-
