John and Mayme Bray
From "History of Beaverhead County" Vol. I
1900-1920
Dillon, MT
John Harvey Bray was the third son born to William and Eliza Bray.
He spent his childhood at Silver Star, Montana. The family moved to
Centennial Valley in the early 1890's. They took up homesteads in
the upper end of the valley, about 10 miles east of Lakeview. John
worked at several jobs and was a driver for the Monida to West
Yellowstone Stage. He met and married Mayme Larson at Lakeview on
July 28, 1904.
John was working in Lima, tending bar, when their first son,
Charles Burnell was born, October 15, 1906. They moved back to the
Valley and a second son Raymond Lee was born September 6, 1909, at
the ranch home where they stayed for several years. They wintered
cattle in Sheridan, Montana, and drove them over the divide to
summer range in the Centennial. Their daughter, Carrie Arlene, was
born in Sheridan on February 7, 1916.
In 1917 they left the ranch and went into partnership with Jim
Dodd, whom they later bought out. They raised Black Angus cattle
and rented the upper ranch from a brother and mother. It was used
for a winter feed ranch. The Lakeview Ranch was home to the Van
Antwerps, Laura was cook and . . . . . . . . . . all went to
School in Lakeview.]
John rented the Jones Fields in Alaska Basin for a summer range and
cow camp. Bobby Allen was chief cook. The Bird Refuge bought what
was the Nye Place in 1936. It bordered the Upper Lake. The ranch
was operated until 1942.
Mayme Bray died in February 1965 and John in May 1965. They are
buried in Dillon.

Burnell (Al) La France Forsythe
From "History of Beaverhead County" Vol. I
1900-1920
Dillon, MT
Al Forsythe was born in Kitchner, Ontario, Canada. He married
Christina Larson, a sister to Mayme Bray, in the fall of 1900 in
Idaho Falls, Idaho. They moved to Lakeview and ran a store for Sam
Burnside. Chris was the postmistress. They also worked on a ranch
near Dillon for Billy Reed and Billy Hollingsworth.
They moved back to the Centennial Valley (Lakeview) where they
managed a store for Miller and Pike. Al later bought the store,
remodeled it, and made living quarters in the back. Al had a
contract with the Monida-Yellowstone Stage to haul tourists to
Yellowstone park, with a stopover in Lakeview. Chris had the
responsibility for the tourists' lodging and meals. Later Al got
the contract to deliver the mail and freight to Sherwoods at
Henry's Lake. The route went from Monida to the Lake on a daily
basis.
In the winter, transportation was by sleds and a good team of
horses. The mail left Monida early in the morning, also from
Lakeview, and from Lakeview to Henry's Lake. The pay for just
hauling the mail wasn't very much so he added to his income by
hauling freight for others and groceries from Monida out to the
Valley residents. His outfit wasn't very fancy for the passengers,
the sled just had a seat on the front; often the passengers walked
and followed the sled. In the warmer weather, it was done with
wagons. The route was much longer in those days and very
uncomfortable. Sometime the freight was so heavy that he had to
run more sleds or wagons and teams.
Al hired lots of men to drive for him. He also had a barn man at
each location to care for the teams and clean up. Al lost the mail
contract in 1930 to Paul Zinc. Al and Chris sold their holdings in
Lakeview to 'Curley' Flint about 1944 and moved to Butte. Al died
in Butte on May 13, 1949, and Chris died in Idaho Falls, February
22, 1969. Both are buried in Dillon.
They were a well like couple and always enjoyed fiends dropping by
for a chat and coffee.

Obituary - Arthur Duane Johnson
Dates = 2-10-1934 > 3-23-1958
Macabre Suicide Takes Arthur D. Johnson, 24
One of the most grisly deaths to ever occur here claimed the life of
a 24 year old Idaho falls man Sunday night.
Dead is Arthur D. Johnson, 24, an apparent suicide, said Coroner
Jack A. Wood, who used an estimated 100 pounds of dynamite to blow
himself and his automobile into tiny pieces near the former city
dump grounds.
The macabre death took place at about 8 p.m. and was discovered when
nearby residents were nearly shaken from their chairs in their homes
by the blast.
Positive identification was not made Monday, but Bonneville County
Coroner Jack Wood said that a wallet containing the man's
registration card and several other cards bearing the same name made
it nearly positive. Sheriff A. E. Heslop said a finger, which was
found several hundred feet from the car would be fingerprinted in
hopes of establishing positive proof.
Heslop said no motive for apparent suicide had yet been found, but
reports indicated the young man had had an argument with this
father. He was the father of three small children.
Threatened Suicide Wood said Mrs. Johnson told him that her husband
told her he was going to kill himself and then carried two cases of
dynamite from the basement into the car. She said she called
relatives to try to stop him, but to no avail. She also said he
told her she would be better off without him before he left the
house.
The car, of which only small twisted pieces of metal were left, was
parked at a wide spot in a dirt road near where the old city dump
was located approximately 8 miles west of Idaho Falls. Over a 200
yard radius was still being combed late Monday morning for pieces of
the body and the car.
The torso of the body was found 250 feet from where the car was
parked.
Measurements showed it had flown 180 feet through the air and then
bounced another 70 feet before coming to a stop.
The torso was blown east and north of where the car was parked while
most of the head of the body was found between 200 and 300 feet
south and east of where the car was giving some hint to the impact
of the explosion.
A German .38 caliber pistol was found near the scene also, with
bullets jammed in the magazine. Heslop speculated that the dynamite
was set off by a shot from the pistol. A search for a fuse failed
to uncover anything further, strengthening the theory that he used a
pistol to blow the dynamite up.
Monday, a group of searchers were covering a 200 foot radius of
sagebrush inch by inch gleaning pieces of clothing and body from the
area.
Wood said it was one of the most gruesome deaths he had ever
investigated.
Funeral Tuesday Funeral services will be held at the Buck Funeral
Home Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Bishop Richard Mason officiating.
Speakers will be Rolf C. Wold and John M. Homer.
Pallbearers include Gail Pullman, Gereay Murdock, Calvin Johnson,
Lowell Johnson, William Murdock and Gary Gardner.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 10, 1934, in Idaho Falls, the son of
Arthur and Alta Higbee Johnson. When he was eight years old the
family moved to Spokane, Wash. In 1944 they removed to Orem,
Utah, and in 1950 to Provo, Utah.
On May 31, 1952 he married Arlene Dodds of Springfield, Utah. In
April 1953 they came to Idaho Falls.
Mr. Johnson is survived by is wife and the following children;
Regena Adele, Karen Marie, Byron Paul; his mother, Mrs. Alta
Jacobsen; his father, Arthur Johsnon, brothers and sisters,
