Obituary - Raymond Vance Cunningham

BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Raymond "Ray" Vance Cunningham, 75, of Bella
Vista, Ark., died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in
Rogers, Ark. He was born April 26, 1926 in Naper.

He graduated from the University of Nebraska. During World War II,
he served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service on the USS Sabalo, and
as a court reporter for Uniform Code of Military Justice court
proceedings. He was an accountant for Shell Oil in Odessa, Texas;
Midland, Texas; and Metairie, La.; and for Western Electric in
Omaha.   He worked as a salesman for Bankers Life and Casualty
Insurance and Horace Mann Insurance Company while he earned credits
to teach mathematics. He was chairman of the math department for
Omaha Public School District/Bryan Junior and Senior High School.
He was on the inaugural committee for gifted programs in Omaha
Public Schools.

HOOPER - The funeral for Linda S. Frey, 48, of Hooper was 2 p.m.
today at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper.

She died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Linda Heller was born April 10, 1954, in Fremont.  She lived in
Hooper most of her life.  She graduated from Logan View High School
in 1972 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a year.
She has been employed as the office manager at Fremont Recycling for
the last 17 years.  She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in
Hooper and was active in the "Praise Singers" at church.

She married Gerald "Jerry" E. Frey Oct. 22, 1977, at Redeemer
Lutheran Church.  He preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1992.

Survivors include: a son, Thad of Hooper; a daughter, Hope of
Hooper; her mother, Betty Heller of Hooper; a sister, Nancy Heller
of Hooper; three brothers-in-law, Jack and Corrine Frey of Tilden,
Morris Frey and Jim and Cheri Frey, all of Fremont; two sisters-in-
law, Mary Ann and Bill Babel of Lindsay and Jean and Bernie Silva of
Columbus.

She also was preceded in death by a son, her father, her mother-and
father-in-law and a sister-in-law.  The Rev. Steve Tjarks officiated
today's service.  Burial was in Hooper Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Hooper Fire Department and Rescue
Squad and Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Warne-Johnson Funeral Home in Hooper was in charge of arrangements.

Anna Heller, 87 Dies Thursday

Funeral services were held Sunday, Mar. 4, for Mrs. Anna Heller,
age 87, at the Warne Funeral Home in Hooper.  Mrs. Heller passed
away at Arbor Manor in Fremont Thursday evening following an
illness of about five years duration.

The daughter of John and Maria Haye, she was born in rural Winslow
on March 12, 1891, and had lived in the Hooper and Scribner areas
until 1944 when she moved to Seal Beach, Calif.  She lived there
until moving to Arbor Manor in 1974. Mrs. Heller graduated from
Fremont Normal College and was a member of the Lutheran Church.

On Feb. 12, 1913, she was united in marriage to William E. Heller
at Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper.  He preceded her in death on
July 20, 1934.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, one
daughter in infancy, two brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Heller is survived by one son, Raymond, of Tarzana, Calif.,
two daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Maria) Paul, Long Beach, Calif., and
Mrs. Leonard (Alice) Havekost of Hooper; nine grandchildren, and 12
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William (Emma) Paasch of
Scribner and Mrs. Albert (Christine) Otteman of Fremont.

Pastor John Erlandson officiated at the funeral services. -  -  --

Obituary -  Betty Heller


The funeral for Betty J. Heller, 83, of Hooper will be 10:30 a.m.
Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper.

She died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Hooper Care Center.

She was born July 20, 1927, to William F. and Ruby (Beahr) Bayer in
Fremont. She was raised in Hooper and lived in the area all of her
life. She graduated from Hooper High School in 1944. She started
working at First National Bank in Hooper while in high school and
retired from the Hooper Branch of First National Bank Northeast in
December 1997. She married Howard Heller, Jr. on Nov. 21, 1948, at
Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper. He died May 19, 1998. She was a
member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper, where she served as
Sunday School teacher, Altar Guild member and in various other
activities.

Survivors include: daughter, Nancy Heller of Lincoln; a brother-in-
law Rodney (and wife, Sandra) Heller of Milan, Texas; and two
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter and son-in-law,
infant grandson, infant sister and two brothers-in-law.

The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate Monday's service. Visitation
will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends 3-5 p.m. at
Ludvigsen's Hooper Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue Monday
one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the
Hooper Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hooper
Volunteer Fire Department, Hooper Care Center or Odyssey Hospice
Care.

Obituary -  Eliza Uehling Heller

Death Comes to Mrs. W. Heller. Sr.

The thinning ranks of pioneer women in this community was further
reduced when Mrs. William Heller, Sr. passed away at 12:40 Tuesday
morning, August 11, at the farm home of her son, Howard, northeast
of Hooper. Her death followed a lingering illness of about a year's
duration. She passed away at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 5
days, practically all of which time she had resided here.

As Eliza Uehling, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Uehling,
Mrs. Heller was born February 6, 1864, at Watertown, Wisc. When an
infant of three months, she came with her parents to Nebraska, the
family being one in a caravan of a dozen other families who came by
ox team to establish a home in the then unbroken land in this part
of Nebraska. The family arrived at Logan Mills June 26, 1864, and
established a home in that vicinity. Hooper then being unknown, and
she had since resided here. In these 72 years of residence here,
Mrs. Heller gained a vary wide acquaintanceship and was held in the
highest esteem by her friends. She was a kindly friend and
neighbor, a Christian woman of the Lutheran faith, holding
membership in Zion Lutheran church and was a faithful attendant at
its services as long as her health permitted. Her passing is
sincerely regretted by friends and all extend condolences to the
family in their hour of sorrow.

She was united in marriage March 24, 1882, to William Heller, who
was also a member of one of the caravan of families who came here
in 1864. Following the marriage they went to homemaking on the farm
now occupied by the son, Howard. Later retiring from farm life,
they moved to town and had lived in town for a number of years. Mr.
Heller died February 23, 1934.

She was the mother of six children three of whom survive, these
being John of Lincoln, Mrs. James Spease of Stuart and Howard of
Hooper. Two daughters and one son preceded her in death, Mrs. Harry
Sick in 1928, Martha in 1933 and William E. in 1934. She is also
survived by 19 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and the
following brothers and sisters, Mrs. A. F. Bott and Mrs. C. G.
Fritz, Omaha: Mrs. Bernard Monnich and Mrs. Albert Fritz, Hooper:
Mrs. Chester Forbes, Howell: Mrs. C. T. Miller, Oshkosh: John
Uehling, Long Pine: Conrad Uehling, Herman, and Joseph Uehling,
Lennox, Iowa.

Her funeral services under the direction of Wollmer & Warne, will
be held this Thursday afternoon, with a short service first at the
farm and at 2 o'clock from Zion Lutheran church, the religious
service being conducted by Rev. J. Schrader of Yutan. Interment
will be made in the Hooper cemetery.

Elmer Heller, 54, Dies in Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Heller Sr. received word of the death of his
nephew, Elmer Heller, 54, who passed away last Tuesday at St.
Gabriel, Calif. after a long illness.  He is survived by his wife,
two sons and one grandchild.  The family lived at 431 East Marshall
St., St. Gabriel.

Mr. Heller was born in Hooper, the family lived on the place now
farmed by Norman Keller.  Mr. Heller was confirmed at Zion Church. 
He left here about 1930.

Burial was at St. Gabriel.

Obituary - Elmer Heller

Former Hooper, Blair Man Dies

Services for a former Hooper and Blair man, Elmer Heller, 56, are
to be in Los Angles, Saturday at 11 a.m.

Mr. Heller, who died Tuesday in Los Angeles, is survived by a
brother, LaVere, and a sister Mrs. Clarence (Elizabeth) Bentz, both
of Fremont.

He was born Jan. 21, 1909, in Hooper, attended Hooper High School,
then lived in Blair until 1929, when he went to California.  He
returned briefly to Blair before making Los Angeles his permanent
home.

Also surviving are his widow, Mary, whom he married June 24, 1935,
in California; two sons, Elmer J. and Michael, both Los Angeles;
three other brothers, Vernon, Arlington, Francis, Los Angeles, and
Clinton, in Kansas; two other sisters, Mrs. Susie Terry of
California and Mrs. Don (Geraldine) Belden, Portland, Ore.; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Heller of Blair; and a grandson.

Mr. Heller was a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church in
Hooper.

Obituary - Howard Heller, Jr.

Howard F. Heller, Jr., 71, of Hooper died Tuesday, May 1, 1998, at
his residence in Hooper.  He was a lifetime Hooper resident.

Howard was born August 30, 1926, in Hooper to Howard and Mabel
(Jahrmarkt) Heller.  He attended Dist. 54 School and graduated from
Hooper High School in 1943.

He served in the US Army Calvary in 1945. On November 21, 1948, at
Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper he married Betty Bayer.

Howard worked as a salesman most of his live, working for Fremont
Farmers Union, he sold Purina Feed for a long time in many towns in
this area and he sold insurance for Insurance America before his
retirement in 1984.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper and was a
past member of the church council

Survivors include his wife Betty of Hooper, two daughters, Nancy
Erickson of Lincoln and Linda Frey of Hooper; two brothers, Rodney
and wife Gaylynn Heller of Milam, Tex., and David of El Reno, Okla;
two grandchildren, Thad and Hope Frey of Hooper, nieces and
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Jerry
Frey; one grandson, Matthew Frey; and one brother James Heller.

The funeral services were held on May 22, at the Warne-Johnson
Funeral Home in Hooper.  Rev. Greg Berger officiated. Alice Dam was
organist and Nick Janssen was soloist.  Burial was in the Hooper
Cemetery

Casket bearers were Tom Wagner, John Wagner, Eric Wagner, John
Roman, Sr., Robert Beck, and Bob Steil.

Howard Heller, 69, Dies Suddenly.  Rites Were Monday

Funeral services were held Monday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church
for Howard J. E. Heller Sr., 69, who died suddenly on Thursday
evening at the Dodge County Community Hospital. The Rev. Henry
Gittler officiated at the service, with Orville Von Seggern as
soloist and Mrs. Edmund Wagner, organist.  Pallbearers were Gordon
Carlson, Norman Keller, Clarence Wagner, Clinton Wagner, Raymond
Wolf and Elwood Wobken.  Interment was in the Hooper Cemetery, with
Wollmer & Warne in charge.

Mr. Heller is survived by his wife; three sons, Howard Jr. of
Hooper; Rodney of Plainview, Arkansas; David, a Uni. of Nebr.
student at Lincoln; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Spease of Arlington; one
brother, John of Fremont; six grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James; one
brother and two sisters.

Mr. Heller was born to Mr. and Mrs. William Heller (nee Eliza
Uehling) on Sept. 21, 1890 on the same farm where he spent his
entire life.

He married Mabel Jahrmarkt on April 21, 1925 at Snyder.

Mr. Heller was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and a past
member of the Hooper Commercial Club.  In 1967, he received the
Pioneer Farm Award and was recognized by Ak-Sar-Ben with the 100
Year award, given when the same family resides on the same farm for
100 years or more.

Obituary -  James Heller

Jimmie Heller Drowned Sunday

The first drowning fatality in this community for many years
occurred late Sunday afternoon when Jimmie Heller, second son of
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Heller, lost his life while swimming in a pool
in the old Logan Creek channel where it runs thru the C. W. Wagner
farm land east of Hooper.

The tragic accident happened around 5:30 o'clock when three farm
youth companions, Jimmie Heller, 15, George Wagner, 16 year old son
of C. W. Wagner, and Roland Jensen, 13, son of Albert Jensen, who
had been spending the afternoon fishing in the creek and pools,
decided it was warm enough for a swim. The pool into which the boys
went for their recreation had often been used for swimming purposes
and was not considered dangerous in any sense of the word, although
parents say that none of the three lads were really able to swim
and so when young Heller stepped into a deep hole where the water
was over his head the other two were unable to go to his rescue.
George, however, jumped into the Heller car which the boys were
using and raced to the Wagner home to get help and an older
brother, Clinton Wagner, brought the body of the unconscious lad to
shore after several attempts at locating him and bringing him to
the surface in which the rescuer's strength almost gave out, but
with Gilbert Stockfleth and Albert Jensen then on hand to give
help.  It is thought that flood waters probably washed the deep
hole at this spot, which the boys say was never there in other
summers.

In the meantime a call for help was sent out from the Wagner farm
and the fire whistle at Hooper sent the department and others from
here, and also some from Winslow, to the scene of the tragedy and
George Wolcott of Winslow arriving first, immediately started
applying artificial respiration in which he was assisted by J. A.
Strese, R. E. Bott and Rev. Paul de Freese, the men working for
over an hour while Dr. C. D. Heine administered heart stimulants
and applied such other resuscitation measures as are known to the
medical profession but all to no avail as the spark of life had
fled.

The nearest pulmotor or inhalator would have been at Fremont and
since the boy had been under water for approximately 30 minutes it
was to late for science and skill to restore the young life so
cruelly and unexpectedly cut off.

James Heller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Heller, was born at Hooper
Sept. 25, 1930, and would have been 15 years of age at his next
birthday.  He graduated from the eighth grade of District 54, the
Sohl school, in 1944 and last year attended Hooper high school
where he was active in the FFA and a favorite with his schoolmates.
He would have been a sophomore next year.

Surviving to mourn the death of a beloved son and brother are the
grief-stricken parents and two brothers, Howard, Jr., in army
service at Ft Sill, Okla., and Rodney, 10, at home. Through the Red
Cross contact was established with the eldest son and he was given
an emergency furlough to come home to be with the family in their
time of sorrow.

Funeral rites for the youth were held Wednesday afternoon with a
prayer service at 2 o'clock from the home and at 2:30 o'clock from
the Zion Lutheran church of which he was baptized and confirmed
member Wollmer and Warne were in charge of arrangements and
interment was made in Hooper cemetery.

Rev. W. J. Wolff returned to Hooper to conduct the largely attended
rites for this member of the young peoples group of his recent
charge, and music was by Mesdames Fred and George Hunteman,
Clarence Wagner and Herbert Blomendahl with Grace Blomendahl as
organist.  Bearing the body of their schoolmate and friend were
Francis Hurt, George Wagner, Elwood Wobken, Carroll Moseman, Robert
Otteman and Stanley Schwab.

John W. Heller Rites Pending

Services are pending at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home for John
William Heller, 84, a resident at Arbor Manor Nursing Home.

The retired farmer died yesterday afternoon at the nursing home. He
was born Sept. 1, 1883, at Hooper.  He married the former Virgie
Thomas in Fremont March 16, 1908. After marriage, the couple farmed
east of Hooper until 1927 moving to a farm near Blair for two
years, then to Weeping Water for two years and then to Lincoln.
Two years ago Mr. Heller came to the nursing home.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include the widow, Virgie, Blair; sons, La Vere, Fremont,
Vernon of Arlington, Francis and Clinton, both in California;
daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Elizabeth) Bentz of Fremont, Mrs. George
(Sussie) Terry in Alaska and Mrs. Donald (Geraldine) Belden of
Portland, Ore.; a sister, Mrs. James Spease of Arlington; 16
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

John Heller Rites Staged in Hooper

Hooper - Services for John William Heller, who died Monday, were
yesterday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Henry D.
Gittler officiating.

Mrs. James Dam was the organist, and Orville VonSeggern was the
soloist. Mr. Heller was born at Hooper on Sept. 1, 1883.

Pallbearers were LeRoy Keller, Marlin Keller, William Sick, Howard
Heller, Jr., Chester Marquardt, and David Heller.

Burial was at Hooper Cemetery.  Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home
was in charge of the arrangements.

Obituary -  Martha Heller

Miss Martha Heller

An illness of a week from pneumonia proved fatal to Miss Martha
Heller and she passed away at about 8 o'clock last Thursday
evening, February, 16, 1933, at the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. William Heller Sr., of this place. To many of the residents of
this city, her death came as a surprise as it was not generally
known she was so critically ill.  She had attained the age of 47
years, 8 months and 15 days.

Miss Heller was a life long resident of this place and community,
having been born on a farm northeast of Hooper, May 24, 1885.
Having been in delicate health, she remained at home and when her,
parents retired from the farm a number of years ago came to Hooper
with them.  She was a devoted daughter to her parents and her
presence in the household will be greatly missed by them.  Besides
her aged parents she is survived by one sister, Mrs. James Spease,
of Stuart and three brothers, William E. and Howard of Hooper and
John of Raymond.

Her funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from
the Zions lutheran church, a large assemblage of relatives and
friends being present to listen and pay heed to the words of
comfort as given by the pastor, Rev. A. S. Pannbacker.  Interment
was made in the Hooper cemetery.

Obituary -  Raymond Heller

Raymond Haye Heller, 77, of Regents Point, Calif., died Wednesday,
July 24, 1996, at his home.

Heller was born Sept. 2, 1918, on the family farm in the Hooper
area, where he grew up.  He attended the University of Nebraska-
Lincoln, where he received a degree in engineering. He married
Hollyee "Holly" Copple. He then served as an officer in the U.S.
Navy during World War II. During the war, he served as a captain of
a mine sweeper in the battles of the Pacific.  After the war, he
worked as a hydraulics engineer with John Deere in the Midwest
until 1952.  He moved his family to Southern California to pursue a
management/engineer career. He was president of Valley-Todeco in
Southern California, an aircraft manufacturing plant which
specialized in high performance aircraft fasteners.  He retired in
1988.

Survivors include his wife, Holly; two daughters, Lee Pelzl of
Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Judi Swift of San Diego; a son,
Tony Heller of Laguna Nigel, Calif.; and two sisters, Marie Paul of
Long Beach, Calif., and Alice Havekost of Fremont.

There were no services.  The body was cremated.  Pacific View
Memorial Park and Mortuary in Newport Beach, Calif., was in charge
of arrangements.

Services For Vernon E. Heller to Be Thursday

Services for Vernon E. Heller will be Thursday, September 29th, at
2 p.m. at the Arlington Community Church. Mr. Heller died Monday,
September 26th, at an Omaha Hospital. Burial will be at the
Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with

Rev. Bryce Hecht officiating and Reckmeyer Funeral Home in charge

Masonic Graveside Services will be conducted by the Hiram Lodge No.
52 AF and AM and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, post No. 71 and
American Legion Post No. 8332 of Arlington.

Mr. Heller was born on April 23, 1919 at Hooper, Nebraska.  He was
married to Emelia Krause on July 2, 1939 at Tekamah, Nebraska. The
couple resided in Fremont for a time but have lived in Arlington
since 1949.  Mr. Heller operated a garage in Arlington until about
two years ago when he accepted employment at Valmont Industries
plant.

Mr. Heller is survived by his wife, Mille, and four daughters. They
are Mrs. Don (Dorothy) Alexander, Nickerson; Mrs. Charles (Donna)
Chappelear, Arlington; Mrs. Jaryl (Marlene) French, Arlington and
Mrs. Maria Kimbal, Arlington.

There are also ten grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.
They are: Francis Heller, Temple City, California; Clinton Heller,
West Covina, California, Mrs. Susie Terry, Arlington; Mrs. Don
(Geraldine) Belden, Mesa, Arizona; Mrs. Clarence (Elizabeth) Bentz
of Valley.

Pallbearers will be; Ronald Booze, Kenneth Booze, Jr., Earl Grove,
Jr., Merlin Anderson, Roger Booze and Philip Horn.

Vernon Heller served in World War II with the U.S. Army in the
Pacific Theater.  He was a member of both the American Legion and
V.F.W. Posts in Arlington, the Arlington Community Church, Hiram
Lodge AF and AM and the Lincoln Gem and Mineral Club of Lincoln,
Nebraska.

A Memorial Fund was been established for the Arlington Community
Church and the Arlington Rescue Squad.

Death came Friday to William Heller

William E. Heller, a well known farmer and a lifelong resident of
this community, passed away about 5:30 o'clock last Friday morning,
July 20, at his farm home about a mile and a half south of Hooper. 
He had been in failing health since last February when a malignant
ailment came upon him.  Though he had been given best of medical
Care and had received treatment at Fremont and Omaha hospitals,
there was no staying of his ailment and his decline was rapid.  His
was the third death in the Heller family in the past couple of
years.  His father, William Heller, and sister, Miss Martha having
passed away in that time.

Mr. Heller had just passed his 46th birthday, having been born on
July 18, 1883, on the farm of his parents the late William Heller
and Mrs. Heller, northeast of Hooper.  As a son of pioneer
residents of this community Mr. Heller naturally also, became a
widely known and respected resident of this locality.  He followed
farming as his life's vocation and in this he showed a marked
degree success.  A few years ago he purchased the place south of
Hooper and built up the place as one of the many fine farm homes in
this locality.  He was a good friend and neighbor and was ever
active in whatever activity that claimed his interest.

On February 12, 1913, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Haye,
who with three children now mourn the loss of a devoted husband and
father and who have the sympathy of friends in their bereavement
and whose passing leaves a void in a pleasant family circle.  The
children are Misses Marie and Alice and Raymond.  A daughter passed
away in infancy. Other close surviving relatives are his mother, a
sister, Mrs. James Spease of Stuart and two brothers, John of
Raymond and Howard of Hooper.

Wollmer & Warne had charge of the funeral arrangements, the funeral
being held Sunday forenoon with brief services at the home followed
by services at 10 o'clock from Zion Lutheran church to which he
belonged. A very large number of relatives and friends were present
to pay their last tribute to his memory and take comfort from the
words spoken by the pastor Rev. A. S. Pannbacker.  Interment was
made in the Hooper cemetery.

William Heller Called by Death 

Again it becomes our duty to chronicle the passing of another of
this community's pioneer and well known residents. This time it is
the passing of William Heller, Sr., whose death occurred last
Friday, February 23 at his home in this city, following several
years of failing health.  Mr. Heller had attained the age of 75
years, 5 months and 24 days.

Mr. Heller was born on August 29, 1858, at Newark, N. J. While
still an infant he went with his parents to Watertown, Wisc., which
place remained his home for five years.  In 1864 the westward trek
to the new land in Nebraska was made, the overland trip being made
by ox teams the mode of travel in those days. They arrived at Logan
Mills, June 26 of that year. On coming to Nebraska the family
located on a homestead one half mile from Logan Mills, northeast of
the present site of Hooper, and since then this locality had
remained his residence.  In all these years Mr. Heller, had gained
for himself a wide acquaintanceship among the people of this
vicinity and held the high respect and esteem of everyone who knew
him. He made his residence in Hooper since 1913 when he retired
from active farm life.

His marriage to Miss Eliza Uehling occurred on March 24, 1882, who
had shared with him the blessings, joys and sorrows of nearly 52
years of wedded life most of which was spent on the old homestead.
Besides the widow he is survived by four children, Mrs. James
Spease of Stuart, William E. and Howard of Hooper, and John of
Lincoln.  Two daughters preceded the father in death,
Mrs. Harry Sick in 1928 and Miss Martha in 1933.  He is also
survived by 18 grandchildren, and one brother, August J. Heller of
Hooper.

Funeral services under the direction of the Wollmer & Warne
mortuary were held Sunday afternoon, with services at 1:30 at the
home and at 2 o'clock from the Zion Lutheran church of which Mr.
Heller had long been a faithful member.  The religious service was
conducted by Rev. A. S. Pannbacker, and despite the inclement
weather a large attendance was present.

Obituary - John Ronan Sr.

John Thomas Ronan Sr., 77, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Fremont
Area Medical Center.

He was born in Hawarden, Iowa, on Jan. 12, 1928. He was raised there
and graduated high school in 1944. He was a loving brother and son.
He served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean War.
He attended Wayne State College in Wayne, where he met and married
wife Lila. Early in their marriage, they operated Johnny's Cafe in
Wayne. In 1954, he started as a field agent selling life and health
insurance for Bankers Life and Casualty Company in Omaha. He spent
the next 22 years with the company, holding various regional posts
and ultimately the position of sales and marketing vice president in
the company's Chicago headquarters.

In 1975, he resigned his position and moved to Fremont to start his
own business, Insurance America, which provides marketing
opportunities and service to over 10,000 insurance agents
nationwide. In 1981, John and Lila purchased the "Turner House," the
oldest Italianate Revival structure in Nebraska and one of the
oldest family homes in Dodge County. After several years of careful
restoration, the Turner House became home to Insurance America's
national headquarters and has been named to the National Register of
Historic Places. John also purchased and made improvements to the
Chicago and Northwestern Freight Depot adjacent to the Turner House,
and recently donated adjacent land to the city of Fremont so that a
commemorative clocktower could be sited there.

Since their marriage in Nov. 22, 2001, John and wife, Joan, enjoyed
family time at Lake Ventura and travel. Their favorite destination
was Costa Rica, where they created "Arenal Springs," a bed-and-
breakfast residential development. 

Survivors include: his wife, Joan; three daughters, Amy Ogburn
(husband, Dr. John) of Blacksburg, Va., Jean Ruwe (husband, Dan) of
Arlington and Mary Corbett (husband, Sidney) of Algonquin, Ill.; a
son, John Ronan Jr. (wife, Christine) of Fremont; a stepdaughter;
Diane Gernstein (husband, Bill) of Fremont; two stepsons, Cameron
Cloeter of Long Valley, N.J., and Courtney Cloeter (wife, Tiffany)
of Long Grove, Ill.; five sisters; Alice Schiefen of Hawarden, Iowa,
Ellen Hurley, Kathleen Tomjack, and Margaret McVay, all of Sioux
Falls, S.D., and Irene Batchelder of Rapid City, S.D.; a sister-in-
law, Jessie Ronan of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Michael
Ogburn, Matthew Ogburn, Mary Catherine Ogburn, Sarah Ronan, John T.
Ronan III, Charles Ronan, Porter Ronan, Benjamin Ruwe, Rebecca Ruwe,
James Ruwe, Thomas Ruwe, Jared Ruwe, Miranda Corbett, Maggie
Corbett, Graham Cloeter, Nathan Cloeter, Hanna Cloeter, Christine
Leitel and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by Lila (Spease) Ronan, Aug. 14, 1996, his
wife of 47 years; his parents, Dan and Margaret Ronan; his sisters,
Mary and Florence; and his brother, Gene.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, 3400 E. 16th St., in Fremont. There will

Rowan -  Lila R. (Spease) was born June 17, 1928 in Hooper, NE and
died at Fremont Area Medical Center Aug. 14, 1996.  She lived in
Suprise and Stuart, NE until 1940 when the family moved to
Arlington, NE.  She attended Hooper High School until moving to
Fremont, NE in 1944 and graduated from Fremont High School in 1946.
She attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE and was an
alumna of Wayne State College, Wayne, NE.  She taught school in
Albion, NE and in rural Washington County, NE.  She married John T.
Ronan of Hawarden, IA. July 11, 1949.  During the next 27 years
they lived in Nebraska, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis,
Richmond, Virginia and the Chicago area. They moved to Fremont, NE
from Lake Forest, IL in 1975.

Mrs. Ronan was a member of P.E.O. Chapter EX, Joslyn Art Guild,
Friends of the Opera House, Fremont Area Art Association, Fremont
Golf Club and Ladies Golf Association, Nebraska Womens Amateur Golf
Association and Aksarben Friendship Circle.  She was also Corporate
Secretary for Ronan & Associates, Inc., a National Insurance
Marketing Company. She and her husband restored the George and
Nancy Turner Home (circa 1867), Fremont NE which was listed in the
National Register of Historic Places January 11, 1996.  Mrs. Ronan
was a lifetime member of the Dodge County Historical Society,
Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railway Association, and a Board Member
of the Historic Logan View Cemetery Association in Dodge County.

Surviving are her husband, John T. Ronan, Sr. and four children,
Mrs. John F. Ogburn (Amy and Dr. John), Blacksburg, VA; John T
Ronan, Jr. (Jay and Chris), Fremont, NE; Mrs. Daniel H. Ruwe (Jean
and Dan), Arlington, NE; Mrs. Sidney F. Corbett (Mary and Chip),
Algonquin, IL; 12 grandchildren; 2 two sisters, Mrs. Raymond F.
Cunningham (Lois) of Bella Vista, AR and Mrs. A. Philip Larsen
(Florence) of Blair, NE, 6 sisters-in-law; 44 nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation.  Lattin Dugan Chambers Funeral Home,
Fremont, NE is in charge of arrangements.  Father Patrick O'Byrne
will offer a private family memorial Mass at St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Cedar Bluffs, NE.  A  Memorial Service for family and
friends will be conducted by Pastor Phil Ronzheimer at Fremont
Alliance Church located at 16th and Lincoln St., Fremont, NE at 11
am, Wed. Aug. 21, 1996. Memorial have been established for St.
Mary's Catholic Church, Cedar Bluffs, NE, Fremont Area Medical
Center and American Cancer Society.

Harry Sick, 61 Taken by Death Suddenly Monday

Harry August Sick, 61, prominent farmer and livestock feeder,
passed away suddenly Monday at the Dodge County Community Hospital
in Fremont, victim of a heart ailment.  He was taken to the
Hospital in the Wollmer and Warne Ambulance shortly after noon
Monday, and was ill only a few Thurs.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Mr. Sick is survived by a son, William and a daughter, Mrs.
Rosemary Milbrandt, three grandchildren, and a brother, Alfred, all
of Hooper.

The Milbrandts were  vacationing in Colorado, sightseeing and
stopping at motels. The Colorado Highway Patrol was asked to find
them and have them call home.

Mr. Sick was born April 15, 1899 at Hooper, the son of Rheinhardt
and Martha Sick, and spent his entire life in this community.  He
was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a
longtime member of the Redeemer Church.

On Oct. 25, 1925 he married Susie Heller at Yutan.  She passed away
on June 18, 1929.  Mr. Sick's parents and two sisters preceded him
in death.

Mr. Sick's sudden passing came as a distinct shock to his family
and a wide circle of friends, by whom he was held in high esteem.

Death comes suddenly to Mrs. Harry A. Sick

Death is sad enough and hard enough to hear when illness warns of
its approach, but when a loved one has passed through its shadow
and has been declared well, then it is hard indeed to have her
snatched away in the twinkling of an eye.

Such was the experience which came to Harry Sick last Saturday
morning when his wife was stricken by death after she had been
released from an Omaha hospital and had entered the car with her
husband to return home to her babies and all the relatives who were
waiting so eagerly for her coming.

Nearly two months ago a little daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Sick and a few weeks later she entered the hospital for an
operation and also other necessary medical care.  At no time was
there any alarm felt by the husband or family over her condition
and all were looking forward to her return home with her health
greatly benefitted when the unlooked for blow fell. Death was
attributed to a heart stroke.

Susie Heller was born October 26, 1895, on the parental farm near
Hooper.  She attended the rural schools of the county and later the
Hooper high school until she decided to take up practical nursing
for which work she seemed naturally adapted.  She followed this
line of work for seven years, making many lasting friendships as
she went into many different homes to care for the sick.  On
October 22, 1926, she was united in marriage to Harry A. Sick, son
of Mrs. M. Sick of Hooper. Since their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sick
have made their home on the Franke farm in Washington county, 12
miles northeast of Hooper.  To their union two children were born,
Billie and Rose Mary Ann, who with the bereaved husband survive to
miss the love and care of wife and mother.

Her passing is also mourned by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Heller, of Hooper, by three brothers, John of Weeping Water, Wm. E.
and Howard of Hooper, by two sisters, Miss Martha at home and Mrs.
Jas. Spease of Surprise.  Also by numerous more distant relatives
in Hooper and its environs to who the news of her death came as a
great shock.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock from
the farm home and a 2 o'clock from the Zions Lutheran church of
which deceased was a member.  The services were in charge of the
local pastor, Rev. G. F. R. Buhrkop, with Messrs. Shipley, Livers,
Sanders and Geisert accompanied by Mrs. Shipley furnishing music.
The church was filled to overflowing, many being obliged to remain
outside during the service hour.  Floral tributes were many and of
much beauty. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery.

William H. “Bill” Sick, 79, of Hooper died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008,
at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born to Harry and Susie (Heller) Sick on Jan. 28, 1928, in
Hooper. After graduating from Hooper High School in 1945, he and his
father formed a partnership in farming and cattle feeding. He
continued to farm north of Hooper until he retired. He served in the
U.S. Army during the Korean War for two years with one year spent in
combat in Korea.

He married Ruth Jones on May 25, 1957, and they celebrated their
50th anniversary with friends and family in Omaha. He was an active
member of Hooper American Legion Post 18, Winslow/Hooper Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 10535 and was a lifetime member of Redeemer
Lutheran Church. For several years, he served as a member of the
Hooper township supervisors.

Survivors include: his wife, Ruth of Hooper; a daughter, Dianne
Yablonski (and husband, Tom) of Papillion; a son, Paul (and wife,
Marla) of Fremont; a sister, Rosemary Milbrandt (and husband,
Lowell) of Omaha and their three sons, Jeff, Todd and Jon; three
stepgrandchildren, Tim, Maggie and Mary Kate; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an aunt, Ann; and his
grandparents.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in
Hooper with the Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be
from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel with
family receiving friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue
one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will
be in Hooper Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American
Legion Post 18 and VFW Post 10535 Honor Guard.
