Edward Fleishhauer was born in Germany, February 21, 1835, and died at his home in Hooper, Aug. 31, 1915, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 10 days, of cancer of the bowels. He came to America in 1855, first settling at Watertown, Wis., where he worked on a farm until 1862. That year he came to Nebraska, locating in Dodge county. Soon after his arrival in this state he enlisted in the 2nd Nebraska cavalry, Co. A. and was sent with the company to Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, to help protect the inhabitants there from a threatened outbreak of the Indians in that neighborhood, during the absence of the men who were serving in the War of the Rebellion. After a short service there he was mustered out with the rest, and came back to this country settling on the homestead four miles northeast of Hooper, and which he still owns. In 1863 he went back to Wisconsin for the winter and on May 16, 1864, he was married to Miss Susana Heller at Watertown, and immediately started on the return to his Nebraska homestead, making the trip by team which consumed five weeks. Since that time he had been a continual resident of our vicinity, braving all the trials and tribulations necessary to the settlement of a new locality in the early days of this state. He and his wife lived through all of these with great fortitude and shared his sufferings with the rest, and lived to see this country grow into the richest and best of the land. After several years of residence on the homestead he moved to Hooper in 1885 to make his home in the brick house in which he resided until death called him. Mr. Fleishhauer was a man of strict probity, upright and honorable and in all the relations of life maintained an even and consistent Christian course. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him and many were his acts of kindness shown during the pioneer days, of which the benefittors will never forget. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Fleishhauer no children were born, his wife, with a number of relatives only be left to mourn his death. He was member of the Zions Lutheran church since its conception and also a charter member of the Upton Post No 133, G. A. R., members of which will serve as pall bearers. The funeral will be held from the house Friday afternoon at two o'clock and from the church at 2:30. Rev. J. Schrader, the pastor, having charge. Condolences are extended to the bereaved wife and relatives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Hooper Sentinel January 8, 1914 Biographical Sketches of Pioneer Men Now living in Hooper Edward Fleishhauer Edward Fleishhauer was born in Germany, February, 21, 1835, and came to America in 1855, going first to Watertown, Wis., where he worked on a farm till 1862. Mr. Fleishhauer came to Nebraska in 1862 and enlisted that year in 2nd Nebr., Cav., Co. A, and was sent to Fort Randall, Dak., being stationed there to hold Indians back, who were at that time threatening to swoop down at any time on the settlers, in the absence of most of the men during war times. After being mustered out he came back to Dodge county and entered a homestead four miles northeast of Hooper. In 1863 he went back to Wisconsin where he spent the winter. Edward Fleishhauer was married to Susanna Heller, May 16, 1864, at Watertown, Wis., and started immediately for the Nebraska homestead. When Mr. and Mrs. Fleishhauer left Wisconsin it was on their "honeymoon trip," which lasted five weeks without rain to interfere. They were accompanied by the following families - Pannings, Wolfs, Hellers, Uehlings, Luthers and Kellers. There was quite a bunch of young people in the company and the merriment of the young people largely overcame the hardships of the older folks. They drove ox teams and brought along herds of their native cattle. Usually they had to ford the streams but on coming to a bridge would go in camp and at night when the cattle was corralled, they would dance on the bridge by the light of the moon. Mr. and Mrs. Fleishhauer moved from their farm into Hooper in 1885 since which time they have lived a retired life. FLEISHHAUER, EDWARD ****************************************************************** Obituary - Susana Heller Fleishhauer The Hooper Sentinel April 7, 1927 Final Summons Come to Mrs. Edward Fleishhauer For the second time within a week, Hooper and its vicinity has been called upon to mourn the passing of one of its esteemed and beloved pioneer women. The first was the death on Saturday of Mrs. Theo. Uehling. This was followed on Tuesday, April 5, by the passing away of Mrs. Edward Fleishhauer at about 10 o'clock that morning at the home of her nephew, W. M. Kusel, of this city. Her death was due to a complication of ailments incident to old age, she having reached the age of 84 years and 12 days. Her illness dates back to last November when she was afflicted with a light paralytic stroke from which she recovered. However other ailments set in, and with the exception of about a week, she had been bedfast since then. Last Friday her condition became very critical, and from then until Tuesday her sufferings were great, a merciful death at last coming to relieve her of her sufferings. Miss Susana Heller was born on February 23, 1843, at Hesse, Germany, and as a young girl came to the states the first home being near Richmond, Wisconsin. On May 16, 1864, she was united in marriage to Edward Fleishhauer at Watertown, Wisconsin, and immediately, they with about twelve families started overland with ox team for the new home in Nebraska, the trip to the west requiring five weeks of travel. On arrival here they settled on a homestead, five miles northeast of the present site of Hooper which she still owns. On this place they lived until 1885 when they retired from active farm life and moved to Hooper, and since then this place had continued her home. Mr. Fleishhauer passed away in 1915. With 63 years of residence in this locality, Mrs. Fleishhauer was indeed one of the real pioneer residents of this community. Coming here as she did in those early days, she suffered along with the other pioneers the trials and tribulations of those days, but with a perseverance characteristic of the first settlers she went thru it all with much fortitude, and finally was rewarded with seeing this section of the country turn out to be the prosperous one it is today. As a long time resident here, Mrs. Fleishhauer became widely known among our people, and by her friendly and helpful nature to friends and neighbors became much beloved by all friends, and her passing is grieved by such. Her close surviving relatives are two brothers, August J. and William Heller of Hooper, and one sister, Mrs. August Kusel of Watertown, Wisconsin. The funeral of this highly estimable woman will be held this Thursday afternoon with short services at 1:30 at the W. M. Kusel home and at two o'clock from the Zions Lutheran church of which she was a member, Rev. Duhrkop conducting them. Interment well be made in the Hooper Cemetery. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Hooper Sentinel February 19, 1914 Biographical Sketches of Pioneer Women Now Living in Hooper Mrs. Edward Fleishhauer Miss Susanne Margaret Heller was born in Fanbah, Germany, Feb. 23, 1843. She came to America with her parents in 1858. They located in New York for a short time. In 1859 they removed to Watertown, Wis., where May 16, 1864 she was married to Edward Fleishhauer. The same year they started overland by the ox team route with a number of other families for their farm four miles northeast of here that Mr. Fleishhauer had previously homesteaded. They came into our little city to reside in 1885 and have since made this their home.Note: Florence Larsen sent this picture to me on 1-6-2003 FLEISHHAUER, SUSANNA ******************************************************************
