Obituary - August F. Kusel

January 29, 1934

August F. Kusel Dies Last Night At Family Home.

August F. Kusel, member of an old Watertown family and one of the
few remaining civil war veterans in this section, died last night
at his home, 414 North Water street.  Death claimed him at 7:30
o'clock and was due to infirmities of age.

Mr. Kusel was the son of the late Daniel Kusel, founder of the
present day D & F Kusel Co. He was born in Domnitz, Mecklenberg,
Germany on March 29, 1843 and came to America in 1849.  The family
settled in Watertown and had been his home ever since with the
exception of a few years which he spent in Nebraska.

His services in the civil war started on August 18, 1862 with his
enlistment as a sergeant in Co. E 20th Wisconsin regiment,
volunteer infantry, which was Watertown's own company.  He was
wounded in the historic battle of Prairie Grove and was returned to
the north and spent three months in a Madison hospital. He was
honorably discharged on April 25, 1863.

Worked for Father

Following his discharge he returned to Watertown and went to work
for his father in his tin-shop in West Main street where he
continued work for a short period.  Then he went west and
established a general store in Logan, Neb., where he served as post
master for a number of years. In 1872 he returned to Watertown
where he resumed his work as a tin-smith until his retirement some
years ago.

Mr. Kusel's wife, formerly Margaretha Heller, preceded him in death
some years ago. They were married in the west.

Four children survive, Mrs. Edward Luther and William Kusel of
Hooper, Neb., Mrs. William Meschke of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs.
Henry Hilbert who resides at the Kusel home in this city. There are
five grandchildren.

Mr. Kusel was the last surviving member of his family.  He was a
member of St. Mark's Lutheran church and was one of the few
remaining members of the O. D. Pease post, G. A. R. when it
disbanded a few years ago. With his death, there remain but two
civil war veterans in Watertown, Sebastian Blonigan and Joseph
Haberkorn.

Recalled Old Comrade

A short time before his death, Mr. Kusel recalled that as far as he
knew only one of his old civil war comrades who served in the same
company with him was still alive.  He August Schmutzier of Beaver
Dam.

Mr. Kusel was a pituresque man.  He was keen and alert despite his
great age and enjoyed having visitors and callers.  He enjoyed
talking over old times and until his eyes began to fail him he was
an avid reader. In recent years he had been confined to his home
but always manifested a great interest in community events.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from their home where
services will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock followed by services in
St. Mark's Lutheran church, the Rev. Julius Klingmann officiating.
Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery.

The body was taken to the Norwack funeral home and will be returned
to the home Tuesday where friends may call to pay their respects
Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday up to the time of the

Augusta Susanna Louise Kusel, 3, was born on December 2, 1866. Her
parents were August F. Kusel and Margaretha Heller Kusel. Her
maternal grandparents were Mathias and Catherine Peters Heller.
Augusta died on December 29, 1869, and is buried at Logan cemetery.

Pioneer Woman Settler Dies at Wisconsin Home

Saturday Mrs. Edw. Luther and W. M. Kusel received word stating
that their mother, Mrs. August Kusel, of Watertown, Wisc., had
suffered a stroke of paralysis.  Mrs. Luther left that afternoon
for the Wisconsin city.  Mr. Kusel leaving Sunday afternoon on
receiving another message urging him to come at once as his other,
who is in her 84th year, was very low.  Tuesday morning Mrs. Kusel
received a message from Mr. Kusel stating that his mother had
passed away that morning from the effects of her affliction.

The death of Mrs. Kusel brings to a close the busy life of one of
the truly pioneer women of this locality, and although she had not
been a resident of this place for many years she was well
remembered by the pioneer settlers of the community north and east
of the present site of Hooper, and word of her death came as a
matter of regret to them all.

Mrs. Kusel (Margaret Heller) was born February 19, 1847, in Hesse,
Germany, and thus had attained the age of 83 years, 2 months and 24
days.  When a young girl she came to America and to Wisconsin with
her family.  A few years later she came to Nebraska, the Heller
family being one of about a dozen families to come to this locality
overland by ox team from the state of Wisconsin, all being drawn
hither by the spirit of adventure and to seek homes in the new land
of promise.  Her marriage to Mr. Kusel occurred at Logan Creek on
March 2, 1866, and thus her death breaks the bonds of matrimony
that had lasted for over sixty-four years.  A few years after the
marriage Mrs. Kusel and family returned to Watertown, Wis., where
she had since resided.

Besides the aged husband she is survived by five children, Mrs.
Edward Luther and W. M Kusel of Hooper, Mrs. William Meschke of
Racine, Minn., Mrs. Henry Hilbert of Watertown, Wisc., and Oscar
Kusel of Clemens, Wisc.  She is also survived by two brothers,
August J. and William Heller of Hooper, and five grandchildren,
Dorothy and Margaret Kusel, William and Phyllis Meschke, Edward
Kusel and Marian Hilbert.

Her funeral will be held this Thursday afternoon at Watertown.

Death Sunday of William M. Kusel

The death of W. M. Kusel, resident and business man of this
community for the past 45 years, occurred at his home Sunday
evening at around 10 o'clock and followed a several month's period
of failing health during the latter weeks of which time he was
bedfast.

About six weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Kusel made a trip to the Mayo
Bros. clinic at Rochester, Minn., in the hopes that the progress of
the disease which was undermining his health might be stayed, but
the diagnosis left no hope for improvement and following their
return home his decline was rapid, death mercifully releasing him
from his sufferings.

William M. Kusel was the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Kusel, pioneer
settlers of the Logan creek valley northeast of Hooper where they
were members of a colony of early day homesteaders.  He was born on
February 23, 1873, and died April 4, 1943, at the age of 70 years,
one month and 11 days.

When their son was but a year old, the family moved to Watertown,
Wis. where he grew to young manhood and where he learned the
jeweler and watch repairing trade, which he followed at Chicago and
also in Missouri before coming to Hooper to be employed by the E.
W. Renkin drug and jewelry company.

After a few years of this employment, Mr. Kusel and the late W. M.
Zellers went into partnership and later he went into business for
himself, practicing his trade in connection with operating a
jewelry store for many years and during the past few years taking
care of his bench work at his home.

On June 15, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Frieda Heine,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Heine, and to their union were
born the two daughters, who with the wife and mother survive to
mourn this first break in their close family circle.

Mr. Kusel was a member of Grace Lutheran church and of Longfellow
lodge No. 89, Knights of Pythias, which fraternal order he served
in many capacities over a long period of years.  In earlier days he
was a member of the Hooper concert band, the men's chorus and
active in church choir work.  By nature he was friendly and genial,
a favorite companion of his large circle of friends because of his
cheerful disposition and kindly ways.

In addition to Mrs. Kusel and the daughters, Mrs. Glenn Lundstrom
of Carleton and Miss Margaret Kusel of Chicago, he is also survived
by two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Meschke of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs.
Henry Hilbert of Toms River, N. J.

Funeral rites were held yesterday afternoon with a prayer service
at the home at 2:15 and service at Grace Lutheran church at 2:30,
Rev. Paul deFreese officiating.

Music for the services was by Donald Shaffer, soloist, and Cathleen
Sarratt, organist.  Pallbearers were J. Zellers, Alfred Stroh,
Richard Stroh, Harry Schurman, Albert Fauss and Rudolph Thedens.
All business houses were closed during the hour in which the rites
were held. Interment, directed by Wollmer & Warne, was made in the
Hooper cemetery.

Close relatives from a distance who came for the services were Mrs.
Wm. Meschke of Rochester, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Heine and
Mary of Grand Island.

Mrs. Edw. Luther Called by Death

Mrs. Edward Luther passed away on Saturday morning at about 6:45
o'clock after hope for her ultimate recovery had been abandoned
earlier in the week when her condition was reported as being very
low.  Her death followed a year of declining health during which
time she had undergone hospitalization and treatment in Fremont,
and later on had been through the Mayo Bros. clinic at Rochester,
Minn., and submitted to an operation at that place.

She returned to her home the latter days of October, but did not
regain health or strength as family and friends had hoped for her.

Dorathea Elizbeth Kusel Luther, daughter of August F. and
Marguerite Heller Kusel, was born September 16, 1868, on the
homestead of her pioneer parents two and a half miles northeast of
Hooper.  At the age of seven she moved with her parents to
Watertown, Wisc., where she attended the public schools, was
confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew to fine Christian
womanhood.

For a number of years she conducted a small merchandise store in
Watertown, while living with and caring for her aged parents. She
was united in marriage to Edward Luther of Hooper at Watertown on
January 10, 1923, and since that time she had made her home here
where death called her on January 20, 1940 at the age of 74 years,
4 months and 4 days.

Mrs. Luther was known for her kindness as a neighbor, for her
devotion to her husband and his children and grandchildren, whom
she loved and served and looked upon as her very own, and who in
return gave her the deep affection naturally accorded to a mother
and grandparent.

She was a member of Friendship chapter, Order Eastern Star, and of
Grace Lutheran church and the Aid society, in which organizations
she was interested and active as long as her health permitted.

Surviving to mourn the loss of this good woman are her husband,
Edw. M. Luther, and her three foster children; Mrs. George H.
Looschen and Howard W. Luther, Hooper, and Ernest Luther,
Arlington, Va.; twelve grandchildren, one brother, William M.
Kusel, Hooper, two sisters, Mrs. Clara Meschke, Rochester, Minn.,
and Mrs. Mary Hilbert, Tom's River, N. J. and a host of friends,
both here and in Watertown, Wisc.  She was preceded in death by her
parents and three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held from the home on Tuesday afternoon at
1:30 o'clock and at 2 o'clock from the Grace Lutheran church with
Rev. W. W. Alexander bringing the spiritual message of comfort to
the large assembly of sorrowing relatives and friends.  The
ritualistic service of the Eastern Star was used in the services at
the home, members of the order having attended the funeral rites in
a body. Relatives from a distance present were Mrs. Meschke of
Rochester, Ernest Luther of Arlington, Va., and John Luther of
Colfax, Ia.

Interment, directed by Wollmer & Warne, was made in Hooper
cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Gus Alhers, Edward and Otto
Luther, all of Wisner, Henry and Edward Luther of Fremont, and Dick
Von Seggern of Wisner.

Died - Edward Luther, 80, on Jan. 8, 1945 at Rochester, MN.  He was
born on Oct. 4, 1864 at Hooper to Mr. & Mrs. Martin Luther.  He was
married to Augusta Alfs on Oct. 4, 1894.  She died on Dec. 20, 1915.
He was married to Dorothea Kusel on Jan. 10, 1923 at Watertown, WI. 
She died on Jan. 20, 1940.
