FORSBERG, ROBERT GEORGE ****************************************************************** Obituary - Anna Borcherding Luther The Hooper Sentinel July 26, 1928 Death Comes to Mrs. Luther After Lingering Illness Though expecting to hear of her death most any day, yet the news of the passing of Mrs. Martin Luther on Sunday was most regretfully heard by her many friends in this locality. Her death occurred about five o'clock that morning at the Richmond hospital at Fremont, and followed an illness of six months duration. In seeking relief from her ailment, Mrs. Luther had spend some time in Colorado. No relief being afforded she was brought back to Nebraska and about three weeks ago entered the Richmond hospital. But all of this was of no avail and she peacefully entered into the sleep that knows no awakening on July 22, 1928, at the age of 56 years, 5 months and 17 days. Miss Anna Borcherding, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Borcherding, was born on February 5, 1872 in St. Louis County, Missouri. When a girl of fourteen she came with the family to Nebraska and settled on a farm in the Fontanelle neighborhood. There on June 23, 1892, she was united in marriage to Martin C. Luther, and had since made her home on the farm northeast of Hooper. She was a woman highly respected by friends and neighbors, a loving and devoted wife and mother, and her presence in the home and community will be greatly missed. Besides the sorrowing husband, her loss is mourned by seven children. The surviving children are: Mrs. Robert Forsberg, Henry, Ed and Laura of Hooper, Mrs. Henry Johnson and Mrs. Ralph Smith of Fremont, and Fred of Winslow, and these with the father have the deep sympathy of the community in their hour of sorrow. Other surviving relatives are her aged mother, Mrs. Chris Borcherding of Arlington; three sisters, Mrs. Alfred Hoganson of Uehling, Mrs. Gus Meierhenry of Arlington and Mrs. Louis Krohn of Sioux Falls, S. D.; eight brothers, Will Borcherding of Orchard, Fred, Henry, August and Martin Borcherding of Fremont, Julius Borcherding of Winslow, Herman Borcherding of Hooper and Eddie Borcherding of Craig, and nine grandchildren. Her funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, with services at the home at one o'clock and at Grace Lutheran church in Hooper at two o'clock, the pastor, Dr. R. W. Livers conducting them. They were largely attended and this evinced the high respect in which she was held by her friends. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery. LUTHER, AUGUST F. ****************************************************************** Obituary - Augusta Anna Alfs Luther The Hooper Sentinel December 23, 1915 Mrs. Edward Luther Dead This community was greatly shocked Monday morning to hear of the death of Mrs. Edward Luther, living east of Hooper. The end came with startling abruptness, she having been seriously ill for only a few hours. Since the latter part of last week she had been ill with grippe, but no serious developments were feared until a few hours before her death, when she was taken with an attack of acute diabetic coma, and at 12:05 a. m., the silent messenger summoned her immortal soul to the realms of everlasting day. Augusta Anna Alfs was born on February 21, 1870 in Holzkamp, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany, and died at her home near Hooper, Nebr., December 20, 1915. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in the city of Ganderkase, and has been a faithful member of that religious organization both in Germany and in this country. She came to America in the year of 1889, in company with her sister, Mrs. John F. Haye, and husband. Four years later with these same relatives she went back to Germany for a visit, returning to make this her permanent home. On the 4th day of October, 1894, she was married to Edward Luther, the devoted and grief stricken husband, who survives to mourn her loss. Of their union six children were born three of whom have passed before their mother into the great beyond. The surviving children are Ernest of Omaha, and Howard and Carrie of Hooper. She also leaves four sisters and one brother, in Germany, Mrs. J. F. Haye, her sister, and a large number of more distant relatives and friends to grieve for her. Mrs. Luther was thoughtful as a neighbor, kindly as a friend, and devoted as a wife and mother. Here on earth she earned the respect of all, and the undying love and gratitude of those nearest and dearest to her. No wonder that her sudden death causes such deep regret. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) from the home at 12:30 p. m. and from the Logan church at 1:30 p. m. Rev. J. Schrader, assisted by Rev. L. Grauenhorst, of Fontanelle, will conduct the services. Interment will be made in the Logan cemetery. The community extends sincere sympathy. Luther Called by Death Mrs. Edward Luther passed away on Saturday morning at about 6:45 o'clock after hope for her ultimate recovery had been abandoned earlier in the week when her condition was reported as being very low. Her death followed a year of declining health during which time she had undergone hospitalization and treatment in Fremont, and later on had been through the Mayo Bros. clinic at Rochester, Minn., and submitted to an operation at that place. She returned to her home the latter days of October, but did not regain health or strength as family and friends had hoped for her. Dorathea Elizbeth Kusel Luther, daughter of August F. and Marguerite Heller Kusel, was born September 16, 1868, on the homestead of her pioneer parents two and a half miles northeast of Hooper. At the age of seven she moved with her parents to Watertown, Wisc., where she attended the public schools, was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew to fine Christian womanhood. For a number of years she conducted a small merchandise store in Watertown, while living with and caring for her aged parents. She was united in marriage to Edward Luther of Hooper at Watertown on January 10, 1923, and since that time she had made her home here where death called her on January 20, 1940 at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 4 days. Mrs. Luther was known for her kindness as a neighbor, for her devotion to her husband and his children and grandchildren, whom she loved and served and looked upon as her very own, and who in return gave her the deep affection naturally accorded to a mother and grandparent. She was a member of Friendship chapter, Order Eastern Star, and of Grace Lutheran church and the Aid society, in which organizations she was interested and active as long as her health permitted. Surviving to mourn the loss of this good woman are her husband, Edw. M. Luther, and her three foster children; Mrs. George H. Looschen and Howard W. Luther, Hooper, and Ernest Luther, Arlington, Va.; twelve grandchildren, one brother, William M. Kusel, Hooper, two sisters, Mrs. Clara Meschke, Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Mary Hilbert, Tom's River, N. J. and a host of friends, both here and in Watertown, Wisc. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and at 2 o'clock from the Grace Lutheran church with Rev. W. W. Alexander bringing the spiritual message of comfort to the large assembly of sorrowing relatives and friends. The ritualistic service of the Eastern Star was used in the services at the home, members of the order having attended the funeral rites in a body. Relatives from a distance present were Mrs. Meschke of Rochester, Ernest Luther of Arlington, Va., and John Luther of Colfax, Ia. Interment, directed by Wollmer & Warne, was made in Hooper cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Gus Alhers, Edward and Otto Luther, all of Wisner, Henry and Edward Luther of Fremont, and Dick Von Seggern of Wisner. Luther The Hooper Sentinel April 30, 1936 Death Summons Martin Luther Martin Luther, a life long resident of this community, passed away about 10:15 last Friday evening, April 24, at his farm home about 8 miles northeast of Hooper. His death is attributed to a heart ailment and came rather suddenly. Mr. Luther had been ill for a couple of weeks from a severe attack of neuritis, and was seemingly on the road to recovery when death came to him. His death came as a great shock to the members of the family, and word of his passing was heard with much surprise and regret by his many friends. He died at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 19 days. Mr. Luther, a son of the late Martin Luther, Sr., a pioneer settler of this locality, was born August 5, 1870 on a farm within a short distance of the place where he died. As a life long resident of the county he gained a wide acquaintanceship and held the high respect of his friends. Following the life of a farmer, he made a success of this vocation and also that of a live stock raiser. He held several positions of trust in his community and in 1934 was a candidate for the democratic nomination for county supervisor from this district. He was confirmed in the Grace Lutheran church of this place, and later affiliated with the Zion Evangelical church in Winslow and was one of its strongest and most faithful supporters. He also held a membership in the Odd Fellows lodge of Nickerson, and the order held memorial services following the committal services at the grave Tuesday afternoon. He was married to Miss Anna Borcherding June 23, 1893, and they continued to reside on the farm northeast of town. Mrs. Luther died in 1928, and following her death Mr. Luther moved to Fremont. He resided there until 1932 when he returned to the farm and had since made his home there. Surviving him are four daughters and three sons. Mrs. Amelia Forsberg, Uehling; Henry, Hooper; Mrs. Esther Johnsen, Denver; Edward, Fremont; Fred, Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Mrs. Laura Fouts, Hooper, and Mrs. Alta Smith, Denver; 12 grandchildren, three brothers, Edward, Hooper; August, Fremont, and George, Wisner; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Rebbe, Saginaw, Mich., and Carrie, Colfax, Iowa; and seven half brothers and two half sisters, Albert and Karl Luther, Hooper; Richard, Baxter, Iowa; Otto and Walter, Des Moines, Iowa; and John, Clarence, Mrs. Minnie Sinske and Miss Lora Luther, Colfax. Iowa. Under the direction of Wollmer & Warne, his funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with services at 1:45 at the home followed by services at the Evangelical church n Winslow with the pastor, Rev. Milford G. Vance, preaching the words of comfort to the bereaved family, relatives, and many fiends assembled there as a final tribute to the memory of the departed. Rev. Vance was assisted in the services by Rev. Richard Hien of Ithaca, a former pastor at Fremont while Mr. Luther resided in that city. All relatives from a distance came to attend the funeral services, and these with the friends of the deceased filled the church edifice to overflowing. Pall bearers were all nephews of the departed, Edward and Otto Luther of Winslow, Howard, Ernest and Elmer Luther and Howard Meierhenry. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Usler and Kenneth and Miss Ruth Sohl, with Mrs. Clarence Hiebenthal as organist. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery. LUTHER, MARTIN CHRISTIAN ****************************************************************** Name on Tombstone = Martin Luther Sr. GAR Dates on Tombstone = 1842 -1923 Obituary The Hooper Sentinel April 5, 1923 Pioneer of This Place Passes Away in Iowa Once more we are called upon to chronicle the passing of an early settler who played a big part in bringing this community from a wilderness to its present high state of productiveness. This man is Martin Luther, sr., who passed away at his Colfax, Iowa, home on Thursday, March 29. He was in his 81st year, he having been born at Moehr, Germany in the year 1842 Mr. Luther came to America with his widowed mother when he was ten years of age. He started then to provide for his mother, to make preparations for the responsibilities that lay before him, and to become a true American citizen - a citizenship that to its full extent he enjoyed all thru life. At the age of 19 he volunteered his service and entered the military service of the United States, serving as a member of Co H, 2nd Reg. Wisconsin cavalry. On Nov. 3, 1862, he was honorable discharged at Keokuk, Iowa, by reason of surgeon's certificate of disability. He was married on April 29, 1864 to Miss Caroline Heller in Wisconsin. He embarked with his wife and other relatives for the west, driving through with a team of oxen and wagon, and took a homestead northeast of the present site of Hooper, this farm now being the home of his son, Albert. Here with his wife he settled down and started his career where the home place still stands as a monument to his success. To this union eight children were born, two sons dying in infancy, while Edward, George, August, Martin C., Carrie and Emma (now Mrs. C. J. Rabe of Saginaw, Mich.), survived to mourn the loss of their beloved mother who died here on December 10, 1876. With the responsibility of a large family on hand and facing the hardships of those days, he felt he needed a companion and a mother for his children, so on February 24, 1878, he was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Ulrich, who then took up the duties that lay before her. She departed this life on January 20, 1918, at the home of her son, Albert. To this union ten children were born, one daughter dying in infancy, leaving Minnie (Mrs. H. F. Sinske), Albert, John, Otto, Richard, Karl, Walter, Laura and Clarence to mourn for the companionship of their mother. Although cherishing his home with his son, he wished to spend some of his remaining days with his children at Colfax, his home for several years and there the end came. He was a good man, a good citizen, a faithful husband and father and a loyal Union soldier, and this latter loyalty to this county was exemplified in his offspring through four of his sons serving in the World War. He was a member of Hooper Lodge No. 72, A. F. & A. M., and in this lodge's early days was one of its most faithful workers, as also in the later years when he moved his family to Colfax, the change of residence being made for the benefit of his health. He was a professing Christian, and in early life joined the Lutheran church, and in this faith he always remained inviolate, and it was through his efforts that the Logan church was organized and built. He was its first secretary. While a resident of Colfax he served for fifteen year as president of its board of education and always took pride in the advancement of the schools. Mr. Luther faced the hardships of the west bravely, and all the trial and dissappointments that come in this life were met with the patience of a true man. Following funeral services at Colfax, the remains were brought here for burial. They came early Monday morning to Fremont and were taken to the home of his son, Albert, where services were held at 2 o'clock that afternoon. At the home the services were in charge of Rev. E. G. Williams of Colfax. At the Logan cemetery where lies his loved ones, his mother, children and beloved wives, the services were in charge of the Hooper Masonic lodge at the grave. This was followed by the volley and taps by the Cornelius Tillman post of the American Legion. Six sons, John, Otto, Richard, Karl, Walter and Clarence carried the body of their father to its last resting place. Music for the occasion was furnished by a quartet from the Masonic lodge.
