Merrick Manor in Fremont. He was born July 24, 1931, in Fremont, a gift of God to his parents, Edmund and Eva Dryden Bridges. He was received into the Kingdom of God through Holy Baptism on Oct. 19, 1939. Gil and Kay Meyer were married by the Rev. Otto Wehrmann at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner on Sept. 2, 1956. This also was where he reaffirmed his faith in God's baptismal promise with the Rev. Wehrmann. They had been members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since 1957. He was a lifetime resident of Fremont except for his years serving his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Korea, Japan and England and was honorably discharged on Dec. 8, 1954. He was employed at Hormel Foods for more than 38 years, retiring in 1993, after which he worked part time in the custodial department of Fremont Public Schools. He also had owned and operated Bridges Painting and Roofing for several years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 of Fremont, was an avid golfer and member at Valley View Golf Course. Those who remain to grieve his loss and rejoice in his life are: his wife, Kay; his sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Kimberley and their children, Austin and Ethan, all of Nebraska City, and Jeff and Sally of Lincoln. Gil was called out of this life into eternal life as a gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ on March 20, 2006, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 20 days, to receive the consummation of his baptism, the crown of eternal life. Family and friends will celebrate these and all of God's blessings with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1440 E. Military Ave., in Fremont. The Revs. Timothy Anderson and Timothy Gierke will officiate. There is no visitation. His body will be lovingly laid to rest in God's earth to await in peace the day of the resurrection. This is the earthly record of Gilbert Bridges. The heavenly record reads, “Blessed are those who die believing in the Lord, for they will rest from their hard work. BULLOCK, JEANNE ****************************************************************** Obituary - Julia Realph Bullock Funeral Held Funeral services for a former area resident, Mrs. Julia Bullock, widow of Lynn Bullock, were held last Tuesday in the Mortuary Chapel of her son, Zela Bullock, at Englewood, Colo. Interment was in the family plot in Littleton, Colo. Mrs. Bullock, 74, died at Englewood, Fri., July 18. She was born in Swaburg Jan. 8, 1895, the daughter of William and Christena Larson Realph. She attended the Swaburg School District No. 17. Following her marriage, the family resided in Uehling and in Fontanelle and moved to Julesberg, Colo. and then to the Englewood suburb of Denver. Survivors include four sons, Zela, Rogan, Gerald and Noel Bullock, ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, all of the Denver area; four brothers, Harvey Realph of Fremont, Edward Realph of Swaburg, John Realph of Littleton, Colo. and Norman Realph of Kansas City, Mo.; and by one sister, Mrs. Martin Jensen (Mabel) of Mountain View, Mo. Julia Realph Bullock Note: John Realph sent this picture on March 28, 2001 BULLOCK, JULIA REALPH ****************************************************************** Barney Rogan Bullock Rogan Bullock, Born = 6-11-1915 died 4-17-1999 Note: John Realph sent this picture to me on March 28, 2001 ****************************************************************** Obituary - Noel Bullock Noel Bullock never learned to fly an airplane, but he dedicated of his life to aviation and inspired countless students during more than 20 years in public education. Mr. Bullock died Feb. 1 in Centennial. He was 79. A former student, Patty Meek, 45, still hears his voice in her head as she teaches special-education students at Sinclair Middle School in the Englewood school district. "Every time I bark at my kids about expectations, ever time I raise the bar, I think of Noel Bullock, because that is what he did" she said. It has been 30 years since Meek was a troubled, rebellious student in Mr. Bullock's American history class at Hinkley High School in Aurora. But she still remembers when she got wrapped up in her term paper on Leadville millionaire Baby Doc Tabor that she traveled the state doing research. She also remembers that days after someone broke into Mr. Bullock's classroom and destroyed his model airplanes, students slipped in early one morning and hung replacements they had made themselves. And she remembers that it had been more than a decade since she had seen her favorite teacher when she wrote him a letter thanking him for all he's done. Four days later, he wrote her back. He still remembered were she sat in the classroom and who she sat next to. Although beloved by his students Mr. Bullock was not, Meeks said , a "touchy-feely huggy bear teacher." After the tardy bell ran each period, he locked the classroom door. "You were always on time" Meek said. "He was very, very strict. You were just ramrod straight in his class. he cared about what you learned." Mr.. Bullock taught for 22 years in Aurora public schools and for seven years at the University of Denver. He believed not only in his student but also in aviation. Born March 29, 1925, in Denver, he was named for a pilot killed in the 1930's in an air race in Los Angeles. His brother Gerald flew reconnaissance mission during World War II. Another brother, Zeke, was at one time a pilot for Continental Airlines. He took his brother on his first plane ride in 1937. Mr. Bullock served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1954 he help[ed organize the first aerospace education classes in the Aurora Public Schools. He went on to win numerous honors, including Federal Aviation Administration Award for Aviation Education and the Crown Circle Award for Aerospace Education Leadership. In 1969, he was Teacher of the Year. In 1981, he was inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of fame and the National Aerospace Education Hall of Fame. In addition to teaching high school and college students, Mr. Bullock also worked as a civilian regional director of aerospace education for the Air Force. In addition to his brother Gerald "Duke"Bullock, Mr. Bullock is survived by his wife, Ann; two sons, Mike and Tim; one daughter, Betsy Freudenberger; and four grandchildren. BULLOCK, NOEL ****************************************************************** Obituary - Zela Realph Bullock Services for Z. Realph Bullock, retired airline pilot and Englewood mortician were Jan. 11 in Bullock Mortuary, Englewood, with burial in Littleton Cemetery. Mr. Bullock died Jan. 7, 1985, in his Englewood home after a long illness. He was 72. He was founder of Bullock Mortuary, a retired Arapahoe County coroner and was long active in community affairs. He was born March 9, 1913, in Uehling, Neb. and attended schools in Denver and Englewood. He graduated in 1934 from Williams Institute of Embalming in Kansas City. Mr. Bullock worked as an embalmer and mortician in several Denver area mortuaries. He later established Bullock Mortuary in Englewood in 1953. He was an acrobatic flight instructor at Colorado Teachers College, now the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He also taught flying at the University of Colorado and Colorado State University. When World War II started, he became an Army Air Forces Civilian flight instructor at Chickashe, Okla. He became a pilot for Continental Airlines in 1942 and also served in the Military Air Transport Command. Mr. Bullock continued flying for Continental Airlines until he retired in 1960. He was appointed Arapahoe County Deputy coroner in 1952 and was elected county coroner in 1954, holding the office until he retired in 1973. He was appointed to the Colorado Board of Mortuary Science by Gov. John Love, serving two terms until 1972. He also served a term as president of the board. Mr. Bullock was named Man of the Year in 1969 by the Colorado Funeral Directors Association. He was a member of Englewood Masonic Lodge 166, Colorado Consistory, Englewood Lions Club, Littleton Elks Lodge 1650, and the Englewood Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the Republican Party. He married Glenna Mason on June 30, 1934, in Denver. She died in 1973. Surviving are a daughter, Julie Goldsmith, and three brothers, R. B. "Bud" Bullock, Gerald J. "Dude" Bullock and Noel A. Sidney was born July 9, 1935, in Fremont to John Reimer and Frances Helen (Lass) Claussen. He attended school in Fremont and graduated in 1953. He joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and served active duty from January 1954 to January 1956. He trained as an air controlman and served aboard an aircraft carrier. Upon returning home, he entered Midland Lutheran College. He graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration in May 1960. He married Karen Larson on Aug. 25, 1957, in Uehling. He was employed at Transco Feed in Nickerson for 30 years as office manager and later as general manager. He was on the board of directors of American Alfalfa Processors Association and also served as president of the Nebraska Alfalfa Dehydrators Association. He also was employed at the Elkhorn Valley Cooperative in Nickerson for 10 years. He was co-owner of the Green Door Auction from 1992 to 1999, where he was the auctioneer. He was a past member of the Fremont Jaycees and a past member and past president of the Pathfinder Cosmopolitan Club. He was a member and past president of the Fremont Area Service Club. He had been the Cub Master of Pack 101. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 200. Sid was a very active member of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. He sang in the choir and taught church school. He served on many boards and committees, including search committees, pastoral relations, chairman of the deacons, chairman of the trustees, key leader and church moderator. He trained as a Stephen Minister. He chaired the church antique show for many years. He was instrumental in establishment of the columbarium. Survivors include: his wife; a daughter, Kristin (and husband, Mervin) Olberding of Omaha; a son, Keith (and wife, Christine) Claussen of Overland Park, Kan.; grandsons, Taylor and Connor Olberding; granddaughter, Kelly Claussen; a brother, Russell (and wife, Maxine) Claussen of Fremont; a sister, Barbara Carlson of Lincoln; mother-in-law, Velva Larson of Fremont; sister-in-law, Linda (and husband, Torrey) Goodin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Walter Larson; granddaughter, Amber Olberding; brother-in-law, Dr. James Carlson; and a niece, Kimberly Steinbach. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, UCC, in Fremont with the Rev. Terri Akkerman officiating. CLAUSSEN, SIDNEY ****************************************************************** Obituary - Gertrude Larson Conklin Gertrude Conklin Rites Wednesday Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Conklin, age 67 of Craig were held in the Elim Lutheran Church at Swaburg Wednesday with Palmquist Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. She died the preceding Saturday (August 4, 1962) at the Oakland Memorial Hospital. Gertrude Marie Larson, daughter of the late Oliver and Mattie Larson was born on a farm northwest of Uehling Nov.18, 1894. She was baptized in that area's St. John's Lutheran Church. When she was nine years old the family moved to their farm in Swaburg, where she attended school dist. 17. She became a member of the Elim Lutheran Church following her confirmation with the class of 1915. She resided on a farm in the Craig area following her marriage May 19, 1920 to Dewey Conklin, who preceded her in death. Survivors include three brothers, Walter of Uehling, John of Craig and Elmer of Scribner: two sisters, Mrs. Carl Meyer and Mrs. Blanche Popken of Scribner: a number of nieces and nephews. One sister, Mrs. Harry Wagner preceded her in death. Pastor Emory E. Pokrant of the First Lutheran Church of Oakland officiated at the services. Pokrant of Oakland officiating. Mrs. Orville Bergquist was organist and Mrs. Marguerite Buck, soloist. Burial was in Elim Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Rouse and Dean Snow of Craig; Barton Strand of Uehling; and Harold Bergquist, Julian Lindgren and Hans Larsen. The deceased, daughter of Oliver O. and Mattie Larson was born in Burt County, Nov. 18, 1894, and moved to Swaburg with her parents at the age of nine. She attended Swaburg School. Baptized in 1896 at St. John's Lutheran Church, she was confirmed at Elim with the class of 1915. For a number of years she was employed at the Brandert Store in Winslow. She had resided on a farm near Craig following her marriage on May 19, 1920 to Dewey (Duke) Conklin, who preceded her in death. Her death occurred August 4 at the Oakland Hospital after having suffered a stroke at her home in Craig a week earlier. Survivors include brothers, Walter Larson of Uehling, John Larson of Craig and Elmer Larson of Scribner; sisters, Mrs. Carl Meyer (Lillian) and Mrs. Blanche Popken of Scribner; and several nieces and nephews. Dallman, 43, of Hooper will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. He died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was born Sept. 10, 1959, in Fremont. He was raised and lived all his life in the Hooper area. He was a graduate of Logan View High School in 1977. He worked for the Hooper Telephone Co. beginning in August 1979. It later became WesTel Systems. He married Janis Wedergren on Sept. 26, 1980, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont. He was active in the Hooper Commercial Club and was an emergency medical technician for the Hooper Fire and Rescue since 1996. He was an avid runner and a marathon runner. Mabel Irvy Realph was born July 13, 1907, to William and Christena (Larson) Realph on the family farm southeast of Swaburg. She attended Swaburg Elementary School and Uehling High School. She married Ernest Wahlstrom on March 19, 1931. Through this union one daughter was born, LaRita Wahlstrom Hall. On Oct. 24, 1947, she married Martin P. Jensen. The couple had one son, Garry Martin Jensen. They lived in Tekamah, NE and Strasburg, CO, before settling on a farm outside Mountain View. They moved into town in the early 70's. They were both members of the Mountain View Christian Church. After her stroke in 1978, she required skilled nursing care and resided for a time in Greenfield Nursing Home. She was born June 2, 1922, in Stanton, attended public schools in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School. She married Carlyle Kammerer on June 4, 1941. They farmed for a short time in North Bend before Carlyle was drafted at the beginning of World War II. During the war they lived at various Army bases in California and Washington. Shortly after the war, they moved back to the farm in North Bend, where they continued farming until 1976 when they retired and moved to Fremont. She also retired from Campbell Soup Co. in Fremont. After her husband of 52 years died in 1993, she moved to Mesa, Ariz., to be closer to her sisters, MaryAnn and Marcella. While living in Arizona, she enjoyed traveling to Branson, Mo., and several countries in Europe with her sister, Marcella, and her niece, Barbara (and her son). In Prague, Czechoslovakia, she had the opportunity of seeing the house where her father had once lived. She returned occasionally to Fremont to visit friends and family, and to celebrate her 80th birthday. In November 2004, she moved to Victorian House in Parker, so she could be closer to more of her immediate family. This year, she said she had the best birthday ever. She was able to have a cold bottle of beer, three birthday cakes and all of the chocolate that she could eat. She received more than 100 birthday cards from friends and relatives in North Bend and Fremont as well as visits from friends and relatives from Nebraska, Colorado and Arizona. She was a member of the North Bend Presbyterian Church and then later The Presbyterian Church in Fremont and several church and social circles. Larsen, US Navy Retired; her son, David of Charlottesville, VA; her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mansfield of Norfolk, VA; and seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was born in Fremont, Nebraska on October 22, 1926, to the late Goldie (Larson) and John Brewer. She graduated from Fremont Senior High School in 1944 and was employed by the local radio station. She was married in First Lutheran Church in Fremont to Norman on December 25, 1946. She spent nearly three decades as a Navy wife followed with 15 major moves to Florida, California, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Newport, Rhode Island. During that time she was active in Navy wives organizations and later as a Commanding Officers wife, contributed her time to maintaining morale among the wives during deployments of the Squadron or ships. She also contributed many hours to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. She became very skilled in various crafts and later became an expert quilter, winning numerous awards for her quilts and wall hangings, which take this craft to the level of art. She has won acclaim from everyone who has seen them and has made one for nearly every family member including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also became an avid golfer. Past memberships include Sewell's Point golf club, Lake Wright golf club, Tidewater Ladies golf association, and Cypress Point Country Club, and in Naples, Florida, Embassy Wood, and Naples Heritage Country Clubs. She is a member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk and has resided at Harbor's Edge since January 15, 2007. As Anna Olson she was born in Dalarna, Sweden, October 31, 1849, and was at the time of her passing aged 73 years and 15 days. In her early youth she emigrated to America and on July 5, 1866, she was united in marriage, at Omaha, to Oliver Larson, who preceded her in death ten years ago. As a pioneer, Mrs. Larson endured the toil and privations of the early days on the homestead and later knew the joys that come as a reward of a life well-lived. She was the mother of fourteen children, five passing away during infancy. There are left to mourn the loss of this dear mother, five sons and four daughters, namely Oliver and Harvey of Swaburg; Andrew of Hooper; Daniel of Fremont; and Edward of Stoneham, Colorado and Mrs. Christena Realph of Swaburg; Mrs. Minnie Koehler of Uehling; Mrs. Lillie Kammerer of Fremont; and Mrs. Elsie Woodruff of Julesburg, Colorado. She is also survived by thirty- five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. The funeral services were solemnized Saturday afternoon with a prayer service at the late home, followed by services at the Uehling Congregational church, the pastor, Rev. W. E. Thompson officiating. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet. A beautiful floral tribute testified of the love and esteem in which the departed was held. After the services at the church the large cortege wended its way to Swaburg where in the quiet God's Acre, known as the Baptist cemetery, she was laid to rest in the family lot. They lived in Danville, IN, Northfield, MN, Norman, OK, and Elk River, MN. He worked at the Air Traffic Control Center in Farmington, MN, and the Air Traffic Control Academy in Norman, OK, and the Air Traffic Control training facility in Eden Prairie, MN. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, sons-Scott and his wife Ingrid, Kevin and his wife Laurie: daughters-Sandy and her husband Greg Olson, Linda Johnson (Steve Purzner), Kim Larson and Claudia Larson; 12 grandchildren-Paul, Shannah, Kenora, Matt, Lizzi, Joshua, Hannah, Melissa, Michael, Neil, Kristin, and Eric. Lason Dies Suddenly A death that came as a shock to members of the Larson family and also to relatives and close friends, occurred about 1:15 Monday afternoon, February 4, when Eddie O. Larson was stricken with a sudden attach of heart trouble and passed away at his farm home in Cuming county, about 14 miles northwest of Hooper. Prior to his death, Mr. Larson had seemed to be in his usual good health and his demise came without warning. He passed away at the age of 48 years 9 months and 17 days. Mr. Larson, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Larson Sr., was born on the Larson farm a mile south of Uehling. There he grew to young manhood and became widely acquainted throughout that community. In 1913 he was united in marriage to Miss Ella May Wika at Fremont where the young couple lived for six years. Then followed a six years residence in Colorado and seven years in Chicago. Three years ago the family returned to this locality and moved to the farm south of West Point in Cuming county. Surviving him are his wife and one son, Lester, three brothers, Dan of Fremont and Andrew and Harvey of Hooper, and three sisters, Mrs. A. J. Koehler of Uehling, Mrs. Carl Kammerer of North Bend and Mrs. Bert Woodruff of Julesburg, Colo. His funeral, under the direction Wollmer & Warne, will be held this Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Wollmer & Warne funeral home, with Rev. W. H. Moeller as the officiating minister. Larson Mrs. Harvey (Hilda) Larson, Winslow, passed away at her home Monday afternoon, May 24. Born on July 2, 1883 in the Argo Community, the daughter of Nels and Anna Peterson. Mrs. Larson had lived in this area all her life. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a long time member of the Elim Lutheran Church at Swaburg. On October 24, 1907 she was married to Harvey Larson at Fremont and for a time lived on a farm near Uehling, then purchased their own farm northeast of Winslow, where they lived until 1959 when they retired and moved into Winslow. She was born Dec. 24, 1915 in rural Scribner to Otto and Jennie Melcher Schellenberg. She graduated from Scribner High School in 1934. On March 13, 1934 she was married to Elmer Oliver Larson. She was a lifetime resident of the community, living on a farm east of Scribner until moving to town in 1971. She was employed at Lee's Market for 15 years, retiring in 1977. Irene was interested in needlework and art work. She was a freehand artist and painter, and an accomplished piano player. She was a member of the United Lutheran Church. She is survived by one son, Deane Larson, who resides at 9820 Creek View Circle; Rogers, Minnesota 55374; also 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on July 4, 1976, 2 daughters, Pamela Larson and Diane Weitzenkamp. (Bub) Larson was born on April 8, 1902 in Burt County, Nebraska, but near the present town of Uehling, Nebraska. His parents were Oliver O. and Mattie (Stover) Larson, whose other children were: Gertrude Conklin, Walter, Luella Wagner, Lillian Meyer, Blanche Popken and Elmer. Clara Graver Larson was born on September 2, 1904 Burt County, Nebraska near Craig, Nebraska. Her parents were Nels and Severiana Graver, whose other children were: Louis, Minnie Freberg and Harriett Janssen. John and Clara were married at the Elim Lutheran Church parsonage on December 30, 1930. They farmed his mother's farm at Swaburg for several years and then moved to a farm south of Uehling on Highway 77. After several years there they moved to a farm east of Swaburg, but in Burt County. In 1969 they retired to Uehling, Nebraska, and had a new home constructed in the southern part of town. After many years of retirement in Uehling, poor health forced them to move to the Oakland Heights Nursing home at Oakland, Nebraska. During the 1930's, John was one of the pitchers on the Swaburg softball team. This team was a favorite in the area around Uehling, and they won many league titles and tournaments. John and Clara had no children, but they enjoyed the visits of their many nieces and nephews. The nieces and nephews likewise enjoyed their visits with them. True to her Dannish heritage, Clara always served a light lunch to every visitor and would include your favorite desert if she knew that you were coming. John died at Oakland on November 6, 1992 at the age of 90, and is buried at the Swaburg Cemetery. Clara died at Oakland on October 9, 2000, at the age of 96, and is buried the Swaburg Cemetery. LARSON, JOHN ROOSEVELT ****************************************************************** Obituary - Mattie Stover Larson The Hooper Sentinel April 29, 1948 Rites Held for Mattie Larson Funeral services were held Thursday for Mrs. Mattie Larson, Swaburg resident for nearly half a century, whose death occurred at her home on Sunday evening, April 18, following a lengthy illness. The recessional service at the Wollmer & Warne Funeral Chapel in Hooper was followed with the formal service at the Elim Lutheran church in Swaburg. The officiating pastor, Rev. Drell E. Bernhardson, spoke words of comfort from the text, "Let not your heart be troubled". Mrs. Bernhardson and Miss Luella Sampson sang two of Mrs. Larson's favorite hymns, "Rock of Ages" and "In the Sweet By and By". Mrs. Alvis Petersen presided at the organ. Interment was in the family plot in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Harold and Orville Berquist, Hans Larsen, Julian Lindgren, Ernest Strand and Carroll Johnson. In tribute to the memory of Mrs. Larson, memorial donations were given by the Elim Lutheran Ladies Aid Society and by friends and neighbors to the Bethphage Mission at Axtell and to the Elim Lutheran Memorial fund, and by the Uehling American Legion and Uehling friends to the Uehling Memorial Auditorium fund. The beautiful floral offerings and the large attendance at the service also bore testimony to the esteem in which the departed one was held. As Mattie Gesina Stover, daughter of John Henry Stover and Anna Marie Gererdson, the deceased was born March 15, 1870, in the community of Dodge county then known as Logan. She was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Fricke in the St. Paul Lutheran church. On March 23, 1893, she was united in marriage at West Point to Oliver O. Larson, prominent Logan township resident. They established their home on a farm in Cuming township, Burt county, where they resided until 1903, when they moved to the present home in Swaburg. Mr. Larson passed away on December 25, 1927. Mrs. Larson was a member of the Elim Lutheran church at Swaburg and an honorary member of the Elim Ladies Aid Society, in which organization she had spent many years of active and faithful service. A good friend and neighbor, she will ever be remembered for her many deeds of kindness and the friendly hospitality of her home. She was aged 78 years, 1 month and 3 days. She leaves to mourn her passing, seven children: Mrs. Gertrude Conklin, of Craig, Walter Larson, of Uehling, Mrs. Harry Wagner, of Swaburg, John Larson, of Craig, and Mrs. Carl Meyer, Mrs. Herman G. LARSON, MATTIE GESINA ****************************************************************** Name on Tombstone = Oliver Larson Dates on Tombstone = Jan. 31, 1844 Feb. 16, 1912 Parents = Lar & Brita (Andersdotter) larson Called Home Oliver Larson A Pioneer of Dodge County of the late 60's Passed away at the farm residence Friday, Feb. 16, 1912 Aged 68 years, 15 days Oliver Larson a pioneer resident of Logan Township living a half mile south of Uehling passed away suddenly Friday morning, Feb. 16, at 10 o'clock following a second stroke of paralysis. Mr. Larson suffered his first stroke on Oct. 8, 1910, while on a hay sweep working in the hay field, from which he recovered but it left him crippled in his right arm and leg. After his recovery he became unusually active and came up town every day that the weather permitted. When the snow came it became necessary on account of his ailment to be confined to the house. From that time he gradually began to fail, dropsy having also set in, and towards the last he could only get around in the house by holding on to the back of a chair and pushing it ahead of himself. On the morning of his demise he had been up as usual and partook of a light breakfast and on becoming tired concluded he would lay down awhile. His wife and daughter, Mrs. Carl Kammerer, helped him to bed and left in a sitting position and stepped out of the room, when suddenly they heard a slight noise and they rushed back in to the bedroom and found that he had fallen back into bed. Thinking that he had fainted they applied a wet cloth to his head and summoned Dr. Perlee who upon arrival pronounced him dead. His death was not altogether unexpected. For a number of years before his first stroke he suffered from a peculiar fainting sensation when in a company of large gatherings which caused him to be of a retiring disposition and he avoided them if as possible. Oliver Larson was born in Limbeck, Wamhus, Sweden on Jan. 31, 1844. He landed in Castle Garden, New York, on July 29, 1863 and from there came to Chicago where he remained nearly a year, following the occupation of basket maker. In 1864 he came west to Omaha where he went to work for the Union Pacific which was then being built. Mr. Larson was married to Miss Anna Anderson in Chicago. She died about a year after marriage. July 5th 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Olson in Omaha. They came soon afterward to Dodge county and then on a homestead in Logan township. There they made their home until eleven years ago when they sold the place and bought one adjoining where they have since resided. He is survived by a wife, five sons, Oliver, Andrew, Daniel, Harvey, Edward, and four daughters, Mrs. Wm Ralph, Mrs. Aug. Koehler, Mrs. A. C. Kammerer and Miss Elsie Larson. The funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Arlander of Oakland officiating. Interment in the Baptist cemetery. Deceased was born in Sweden Jan. 31, 1841. He came to Omaha in 1866, was married there that year and moved to his homestead eight miles north of here, where he since resided. He leaves besides his sorrowing widow, five sons and four daughters, all of Hooper or vicinity. They are: Oliver, Dan, Edward, Andrew, Harvey, Mrs. William Ralph, Mrs. August Koehler, Mrs. Carl Kammerer and Elsie. The funeral was held from the house at 2 p. m. Sunday and was conducted by Rev. Arlander, of Oakland. Interment in Baptist cemetery, two miles south of Uehling. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For the Uehling, NE Centennial Book to be Published in 2006 Oliver and Anna (Olson) Larson Oliver Larson was born at Limbeck, Våmhus, Mora, Sweden on January 31, 1844 to Lars and Brita Andersdotter Larson whose other Swedish born children were Mait (1839-???? may have died as an infant), Andrew (1841-1908), Carrie Lund (1847-1893), Mary Peterson (1849- 1890) and Becky Frost (1852-1916). Oliver was 19 years old when he emigrated to the USA, landing at Castle Garden, NY on July 29, 1863. It is not known if he emigrated alone or with other members of his family. However, his parents and all of his sisters and his brother did emigrate to the USA and they settled near the present town of Uehling, NE. Oliver's first home in America was in Chicago, IL where he worked as a basket maker for a year. Oliver Larson married Anna Anderson in Chicago in 1863, and they moved to Omaha, NE in 1864 where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Anna died at Omaha in 1864. In September, 1864 Oliver applied for a homestead, application No. 417, for the NW quarter of Section 10 in Township 20N of Range 8E. The homestead papers state that he settled on this land on September 18, 1864 and was the head of a family. Anna Olson was born on October 31, 1849 at Mora, Dalarna, Sweden to Oliver and Margit Olsdotter Olson, whose other children were Olaf (1846-???), Margaret Johnson (1853-1919), Carrie Larson (1857- 1935), Christina Peterson (1860-1945), Andrew (1863-????) and Henry Andrew (1867-1952). All of the Olson children were born in Sweden except Henry Andrew who was born at Swaburg, Dodge County, Nebraska. Anna Olson emigrated to the USA with her parents and other family members on July 8, 1865 at the age of 16 years. Their first home was also Chicago, IL, but they soon moved to Omaha, NE, and later to the Swaburg neighborhood of Dodge County. Oliver Larson and Anna Olson were married at Omaha, Nebraska on July 5, 1866 and settled on Oliver's homestead near the present town of Uehling, NE. The homestead process was completed in October, 1869 with the final certificate No. 180 issued in November, 1871. The homestead papers show that by 1869 Oliver had built a 14X16 log house with 1 door and 2 windows, and that they had 2 children. Oliver became a US citizen on October, 4, 1869 at Fremont, Dodge County, NE. Oliver and Anna lived on the homestead until about 1901 when they sold it and bought an adjoining farm in section 11. Oliver and Anna had 14 children: Oliver (1867-1927), Unknown (?-?), Anna (1871-1873), Ann (1872-1872), Mary (1872-1872), Christina Realph (1873-1928), Charley (1876-1890), Andrew (1878-1947), Daniel (1881-1955), Harvey (1883-1959), Edward (1886-1935), Minnie Koehler (1888-1936), Lillie Kammerer (1890-1976) and Elsie Woodruff (1893- 1974). Oliver Larson, 68, died from a stroke on February 16, 1912 at his home, a half mile south of Uehling, NE. He was buried at the Baptist Cemetery, south of town. For several years Anna made her home with her daughter, Minnie (Mrs. August Koehler), where she died on November 15, 1922 at the age of 73. She is also was buried at the Baptist Cemetery. Graves for the children; Unknown, Anna, Ann and Mary have not been located, and it is possible that they were buried on the homestead. Larson The Hooper Sentinel December, 29, 1927 Swaburg Community saddened by Death of O. Larson The Swaburg community was shocked and greatly saddened on Christmas morning upon learning of the sudden death of one of its most prominent and much esteemed citizens, Oliver O. Larson. Mr. Larson, who was apparently in his usual good health, had made a trip to Uehling, Saturday, to spend the evening. At eleven o'clock, he began to make preparations to return home when he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack, which was so severe that it was impossible to take him to his home, so he was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. A. J. W. Koehler. He regained consciousness and was able to converse with the attending physician and with those about him, but later suffered a second attack and the final summons came at 5:50 o'clock, just at the dawning of Christmas day. Oliver O. Larson, the oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Larson, was born on the homestead one-half mile south of Uehling, on July 27, 1867, and passed away at Uehling on December 25, 1927, at the age of 60 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was baptized in the home of his parents by a Mission pastor and in his youth taught a class in Sunday School for several years. He attended the Fremont Norman College and was one of Swaburg's pioneer school masters. On March 20, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Stover, at West Point, and they established their first home in Cuming Township in Burt County, later moving to Swaburg which has since been the family home. The deceased, who was a man of keen intellect, was one of Swaburg's most public-spirited citizens, being interested in all movements pertaining to the welfare of the community. He was possessed of a jovial and congenial personality and was a good friend and neighbor, one who will be greatly missed in Swaburg's circle of citizenry. Mr. Larson took an active part in politics and was widely known throughout Dodge county, having been a candidate for assessor several years ago, when he polled a large vote of confidence from his friends. For the past several years he had been the very efficient assessor for Logan township, which office he held at the time of his demise. When a resident of Burt county in the early days, he held a similar office there. He was a man of integrity, and always earned the special commendation of his superior officers in the work. He was also much interested in school affairs, and for many years served as the able director of the Swaburg school district. There remain to mourn his passing, the wife and seven children, Gertrude (Mrs. D. E. Conklin) of Craig; Walter, of Uehling; Luella (Mrs. Harry Wagner) of Hooper; and John, Lillian, Blanche and Elmer, of Swaburg. Surviving him also are two grandsons and four brothers, Daniel of Fremont; Andrew, of Hooper; Harvey, of Swaburg; and Ed. of Chicago; and four sisters, Mrs. W. H. Realph, of Swaburg; Mrs. A. J. W. Koehler, of Uehling; Mrs. Carl Kammerer of North Bend; Mrs. Bert Woodruff, of Julesburg, Colorado. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with a short service at the late home, followed by the formal service at the Elim Lutheran church, interment being made in the family lot in the church cemetery. The passing of this respected citizen is made double sad, coming at the Christmas season, his death occurring also on the birthday anniversary of the daughter Blanche. Larson Oliver Larson Attack Victim Township Assessor dies at Uehling Uehling, Dec. 27.-Oliver O. Larson, a prominent farmer of the Swaburg community and township assessor for several years, died Sunday morning at six o'clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. J. W. Koehler, in Uehling. Mr. Larson was stricken with a heart attack late Saturday evening. He was born July 27, 1867, on a farm five miles south of Uehling, and was married March 30, 1893, to Miss Mattie Stover of West Point. The wife and seven children survive, the children being as follows: Mrs. Duke Conklin of Craig, Walter Larson of Uehling, Mrs. Harry Wagner of Hooper, John Larson, Lillian Larson, Blanche Larson and Elmer Larson, all at home. Mr. Larson was an active member of the Mission church and was an enthusiastic Sunday school worker and teacher. He figured prominently in public affairs, having served at various times as a member of the township board and was township assessor at the time of his death. He was a candidate for county assessor a few years ago. Larson, who died in Uehling Sunday morning, was held Tuesday afternoon with a short prayer service at the family home here followed by the formal service at the Elim Lutheran church, Rev. Arnold Thoren had charge of the services. Mrs. Arnold Thoren and Miss Luella Sampson rendered two vocal numbers. A large assemblage of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute to Mr. Larson who had long been a prominent member of the community. Larson was born on the homestead of his parents, Lars and Anna (Olson) Larson, in Section 10, Township 20N of Range 8E on July 27, 1867. Before his marriage Oliver was a school teacher, and after his marriage he was a farmer. His additional interests included being a Logan Precinct appraiser, a 1910 US Census taker, a violin player and an amateur photographer. Mattie Gesina Stover was born west of Logan Creek in Dodge County, Nebraska on March 15, 1870 to Heinrich and Anna Marie (Gerdsen) Stover. Mattie was the only child of Heinrich and Anna Marie Stover to be born in the USA, the other children; John Henry (1861-1951), John Bernhardt (1863-1948), and Kate Pueppka (1867-1945) were born in Oldenburg, Germany. The Stover family emigrated to the USA in 1870. Mattie's father, Heinrich Stover, died on July 6, 1875, and is buried at St. Paul's Cemetery north of Hooper, NE. Mattie's mother, Anna Marie, married John D. Kuhlman on July 9, 1879 at St. John's Lutheran Church north of Hooper, NE. Anna Marie died on May 25, 1918 and is buried at a small cemetery northwest of Uehling, but in Burt County. Oliver O. Larson and Mattie Gesina Stover were married on March 20, 1893 at West Point, Cuming County, Nebraska. The marriage was performed by Cuming County Judge Franklin Manning and witnessed by C. L. Stockman and Christena Larson. Oliver was one of the first Swedish boys from east of the Logan Creek to marry a German girl from west of the Logan Creek. Both spoke the native language of their parents while at home, but after her marriage Mattie never spoke German again. Oliver and Mattie farmed in Burt County near the present town of Uehling for several years. In June, 1902 Oliver and Mattie Larson purchased a 130 acre farm one mile south of Elim Lutheran Church and 3/4 of a mile east in Section 25 from John Soll for $59 an acre. They moved onto this farm in the spring of 1903. After several years the family was too large for the farm house and the house was enlarged. The carpenter that did the work was Lynn Bullock. After Mattie's death the farm was sold to settle the estate and the farm was purchased by Nels Nelson. The farm house was destroyed by fire in 1991. Oliver and Mattie had seven children: (1) Gertrude (1894-1962) married Dewey Conklin, no children; (2) Walter Henry (1897-1968) married Velva Williams, they had 2 daughters, Karen and Linda; (3) Luella (1899-1951) married M. Harry Wagner, they had 2 sons, Harry and Duane; (4) John (1902-1992) married Clara Graver, they had no children; (5) Lillian (1904-1979) married Carl Meyer, they had 1 daughter, Kay; (6) Blanche (1910-1977) married Herman Popken, they had 2 children, Kent and Jane; and (7) Elmer (1913-1976) married Irene Schellenberg, they had 1 son, Deane and 2 daughters, Diane and Pamela. Larson, 78, died from cancer on March 20, 1948 at her farm home, and she was buried at the Swaburg Cemetery. Koehler was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Uehling to August and Minnie (Larson) Koehler. She grew up in Uehling and was a 1942 graduate of Uehling High School. She married Robert F. “Bob” Mehaffey on Sept. 23, 1949, at Elim Lutheran Church in Swaburg. She lived in Hooper until her marriage and then moved with her husband to North Bend. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church and United Presbyterian Women in North Bend; P.E.O. International, Chapter CT; and a garden club member. Her devotion to the church, her strong faith and love for her family was an important part of her life. Survivors include: her husband, Bob; a son, Bob (and wife, Sue) Mehaffey, Jr.; a daughter, Mary (Mrs. John) Riha of Beatrice; and three grandchildren, John Riha, Carrie Riha and Sarah Mehaffey. Mrs. Nieman was formerly Ella Mae Wike and she was born June 17, 1892, in North Carolina. She came to Fremont in 1911 and in 1913 was married to Edw. O. Larson, a brother of A. O. Larson of Hooper. Blanche Rachel Larson, daughter of the late Oliver O. and Mattie Stover Larson, was born at their farm home in Swaburg on Christmas Day, 1910. She attended the Swaburg Elementary School, District No. 17, graduated from Hooper High School and also from a night course at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont with a teaching degree. She was confirmed at Elim Evangelical Lutheran Church in the class of l926. She married Herman Popken Nov. l8, 1933. Just last year she retired after 19 years as a public school teacher, the first five years of which were at her home school, District No. 17, and later, as first grade teacher in the Scribner Public Schools. Survivors include a son, Kent Popken: a daughter Jane (Mrs. Jeff Rehder) and two granddaughters, Tiffany and Buffy Popken, all of Omaha: brother, John R. Larson of Uehling: and sister Lillian (Mrs. Carl Meyer) of Scribner. Preceding her in death were two brothers, Walter and Elmer Larson and two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Conklin and Mrs. Luella Wagner. Funeral services for Mrs. Popken were held last Monday at the United Lutheran Church in Scribner of which she was a member. The Rev. Wayne Barthel was the officiating clergyman. Mrs. Allen Boschult presided at the organ and was also accompanist for the vocalist, Miss Mary Boschult. Interment was in the Elim Lutheran Cemetery at Swaburg. The casket bearers were relatives, Deane Larson, Jeff Bridges, Harry Wagner, Duane Wagner and Norman Realph, and also the superintendent of the Scribner Public Schools, Dale DeReise. She attended Hooper High School and was a graduate of Midland College. Realph, received injuries from which she succumbs sixteen hours later. A number of children of which Ada was a number were riding home from school in a wagon and in rounding a corner, they were thrown out and Ada fell directly in front of one of the rear wheels which passed over the abdomen. She was immediately carried to her home and Dr. Storkan was called and later Dr. Heine was called in consultation but nothing could be done to save the little girl, and she passed away of severe internal injuries early Tuesday morning. Floyd Realph Details Learned of Crash in Which Pvt. Realph Died Details were learned here Wednesday of the crash in which Pvt. Floyd Realph, formerly of Uehling and Swaburg, died Friday. Pvt. Realph, an instrument trainer instructor, was on an instrument training mission from Bryan army air field in Texas with six other instructors. Their two-engined plane crashed during a rainstorm near Trinity, Tex., and six of the soldiers were killed while one parachuted to safety. Funeral services for Pvt. Realph will be held from Elim Lutheran church at Swaburg, Friday at 2 p.m., and interment will be in the Elim cemetery. Dr. George D. They had worked in Cripple Creek, Victor, Alma and Breckenridge in Colorado when mining was popular. She was a charter member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Littleton, Colo. He died at a North Kansas City hospital June 16 (1981) after a week's illness following a heart attack. Interment was a Shadyville, Mo. Norman, son of Wm. and Christina Realph, was born on the family farm southeast of Swaburg Nov. 5, 1913 and attended Swaburg school. Later he moved with his family to a farm south of Uehling. He was a graduate of the Uehling High School and had attended the 1981 alumni banquet as a member of the honored 50 year class. He was associated with FAA in Denver and later in Kansas City until his retirement except for a brief tour in the Marines during World War II. He married Margie Scott Jan. 17, 1948 in Kansas City. He was a charter member of a Baptist church there. A skillful and progressive farmer of Dodge County, William Realph has had an extended practical experience in everything relating to agriculture, and is considered an authority on the various branches of this highly important industry. He was born October 19, 1870, in Dodge County, Nebraska, the son of John Realph, one of the sturdy pioneers of this section of the country. Born and bred in Ireland, John Realph left the Emerald Isle in early life, making his way to the United States, which was known across the ocean as the land of plenty, and for a time was variously employed, working industriously to support his wife and children. In 1870 he came by train as far west as Omaha, Nebraska, and from there, looking for a tract of good land, he walked into Dodge County, and having homesteaded eighty acres of land installed his family in a dugout and began the improvements of his newly acquired property. The country roundabout was in its primitive condition, and the wily red man was everywhere evident, while wild beasts roamed at will. Although somewhat hampered by the lack of cash, he labored with indomitable perseverance and not only improved a valuable homestead, but contributed his full share in advancing the growth and prosperity of the community in which he lived. His wife Mrs. Bridget Realph, died on the old homestead at the ripe old age of fourscore years. He is still living, making his home with a daughter in Custer County, this state. The fourth child in order of birth in a family of eight children, William Realph was brought up in pioneer days, and well remembers when Indians were numerous, and generally peaceful. Beginning life for himself at the age of twenty years, he selected the occupation with which he was the most familiar as his life work, and has since been actively engaged in general farming and stock raising and feeding, finding both pleasure and profit in his labors. His land, advantageously situated on section 30, Logan Township, is under an excellent state of culture, the buildings are in good repair, the farm well stocked, and everything about the place bespeaks the ability, industry and wise supervision of the owner. He also owns a half section of land in Colorado, near Julesburg. Mr. Realph is a good democrat in politics and religiously is not connected with any church organization. Mr. Realph married in 1895 Christina Larson, and into their pleasant home eight children have made their advent, namely: Mrs. Julia Bullock of Julesburg, Colorado; Harvey, Bryant, Edward, John, Mabel, Floyd and Norman, all of whom are at home with the exception of Mrs. Bullock. Harvey Realph, the eldest son, was drafted during the World war, giong into the Three Hundred and Fifty-Fifth Infantry, Company A, Eighty-Ninth Division, and during the year he spent overseas took part in various battles of note, including the engagements at St. Mihiel, on the Meuse, and in the Argonne Forest. John and Bridget, natives of Ireland, emigrated in 1864. They were the parents of 8 children, but only 5 survived their mother; Mary Mossburger, Mrs. John Slack, Mrs. Max Slack, William and Edward. Christina Larson was born in Logan Township, Dodge County, Nebraska on October 23, 1873 to Oliver and Anna (Olson) Larson. Oliver and Anna, natives of Sweden, were married at Omaha, NE on July 5, 1866. They were the parents of 14 children, but only 10 survived to adulthood; Oliver, Christina, Charley, Andrew, Daniel, Harvey, Edward, Minnie Koehler, Lillie Kammerer and Elsie Woodruff. William and Christina Realph were married at West Point, Nebraska on June 25, 1894 by Franklin Manning, Cuming County Judge, and the witnesses were William Collins and Harry B. Miller. They farmed about 2 miles southeast of Elim Lutheran Church (Swaburg), but later moved to a farm south of Uehling, Nebraska. Christina and William Realph were the parents of 9 children. (1) Julia (1895-1969) married Lynn Bullock and they had 4 children; Zela, Rogan, Gerald and Noel. (2) Harvey (1896-1979), a World War I veteran, married Carmen Sommerer and they had 2 daughter; Carmen and Mabel. (3) William Bryan (1898-1964) was not married. (4) Edward (1900-1971) married Marjorie Erickson and they had 2 children; Carolee and James. (5) John (1903-1979) married Marie Brodeen and they had 7 children; Keith, Don, Marilyn, Mardee, Dale, Judy and John. (6) Ada (1905-1915) died from injuries received from a wagon accident on the way home from school. (7) Mabel (1907-2000) married Ernest Wahlstrom and they had 1 daughter, La Rita. Mrs. Realph had been always thot of as being in robust health, so the news of her sudden demise came as a sad shock to the entire community. She had mentioned a strange feeling in her side a few days previous but she paid little attention to it. On the day of her death she went about as usual attending to her duties around the home. She was out in the yard, when members of the family heard her coughing, and she was removed to the house, where every effort was made to revive her. A physician was hastily summoned but before his arrival, her spirit had fled. Mrs. Realph was the type of woman whose every consideration was her home and her loved ones. Her sudden taking away leaves an aching void in the home circle, where the loss of her guiding, ministering hand of love is so keenly felt. She was possessed of an unfailingly happy disposition, always friendly, always kindly, and neighbors and friends alike, will miss her sympathetic companionship. Christena Larson was born October 23, 1873, on the homestead of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Larson near Uehling, and there she spent her girlhood days. On June 25, 1895, she was united in marriage to William H. Realph, and since then the family home has been in the Swaburg community. She passed to the Great Beyond at 9:30 on Thursday evening, September 27, 1928, aged 54 years, 11 months and 4 days. Besides the husband, there are left to mourn the loss of a most devoted mother, eight children, namely, Harvey, of Lyons; Julia ( Mrs. Lyn Bullock) of Denver, Colo.; Bryan of Sacremento, Calif.; and Edward, John, Mabel, Floyd and Norman at home. One daughter, Ada, passed away at the age of ten years in 1915. She is also survived by six grandchildren, and also seven brothers and sisters, who are Daniel Larson, of Fremont; Andrew Larson, of Hooper; Harvey Larson, of Swaburg; Ed. Larson, of Chicago; Mrs. A. J. W. Koehler, of Uehling; Mrs. Carl Kammerer of North Bend, and Mrs. Bert Woodruff of Julesburg, Colo. The late Oliver O. Larson, who passed away from a sudden heart attack last year Christmas, was also a brother. The funeral was solemnized Sunday afternoon with a prayer service at the home, followed by the formal services at the Elim Lutheran church the pastor, the Rev. Arnold Thoren, officiating. Mrs. Thoren and Miss Luella Sampson sang three duet numbers, " Jesus, Lover of My Soul, "Saved by Grace" and "Through the Gates of Gold." There was a large attendance and a beautiful floral tribute to testify to the high regard in which the departed one was held. Interment was made in the family lot in the quiet God's Acre adjoining the church. The bearers were Andrew Bowman of Uehling, Emil Christensen, Charles Lindgren, G. A. Westergren, Andrew Erickson and Erick Olson. Realph Dies Suddenly at Farm Home Death silently entered the Wm. Realph farm home south of town and claimed the life of Mrs. Realph, last Thursday evening. Wagner Buried Tuesday Death came on Saturday afternoon February 24, to Mrs. Harry Wagner, sr., of Scribner, following an illness of several month's duration. She had submitted to a major operation at the Dodge County Community hospital in Fremont on January 11, and was brought home from the hospital several weeks ago, during which time members of her family had ministered to her care with tender devotion. As Luella Lizzie Larson, daughter of the late Oliver O. Larson and Mattie Gesina Stover, the deceased was born August 26, 1899 in Cuming township, Burt County. When she was four years of age the family moved to Swaburg community. She attended the Swaburg school, district no. 17. In 1915, she was confirmed and became a member of the Elim Lutheran Church at Swaburg. Her marriage to M. Harry Wagner, of Hooper took place at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on September 29, 1923. They established their home in Hooper, and about ten years go moved to Oakland, later moving to the Larson farm in Swaburg, where they resided until two year ago when they moved to Scribner. Mrs. Wagner was an active member of the Wo-He-Lo club at Swaburg which she had served as both president and secretary. At the time of her passing, she was aged 51 years, 5 months and 28 days. Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her loss two sons, Harry, jr. of Scribner and Duane of Oakland. She is also survived by one granddaughter, and three brothers, Walter Larson of Uehling, John Larson, of Craig, and Elmer Larson of Scribner, and three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Conklin, of Craig and Mrs. Carl Meyer and Mrs. Herman G. He was a mechanic and was last employed by Scribner Implement before retirement. He was married to Luella Larson in 1924. She died in 1951. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Norman, two years ago. Mr. Wagner died Monday, Feb. 2, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha where he had been a patient for two weeks. He has made his home at the Good Samaritan Center in Scribner several years. Wagner of Hooper Badly Burned in Blast Explosion Is Cause of Injury to Fire Chief Hooper, Nov. 10 - Harry M. Wagner, chief of the Hooper volunteer fire department, was seriously burned Sunday morning by a mysterious explosion in a burning home. The explosion occurred in the Frank H. Nelson home shortly after 11:30 o'clock Sunday morning, when Wagner and other volunteer firemen were fighting flames that threatened to destroy the residence. The fire chief was standing on the roof of the kitchen which adjoins the main building. A window near him was shattered, and fragments were thrown a distance of 50 feet. The roof of the house was raised a foot in the air, and when it dropped back the whole building appeared to bulge out. Wagner sustained burns on the left side of his body and head, his left eye was closed, and his left hand and arm were painfully scorched. The cause of the explosion is not known. The fire is believed to have started in a small clothes closet. The house was heated by a coal stove, and there was fire in the stove, but there were no indications that this figured in either the origin of the fire or the subsequent explosion. Mrs. Nelson and a daughter were at church at the time. The fire was discovered by Mr. Nelson while he was standing on the street a short distance away talking to a friend. Wedergren Wedergren Death Due to Exposure The death of Ivan J. Wedergren, 54, 234 W. 10th St., whose body was found Friday frozen in his station wagon near Uehling, has been ruled due to exposure. William Gilmore, deputy county attorney, said Saturday that a physician who had been treating Mr. Wedergren, examined the body late Friday and made the determination. Mr. Wedergren was found in the Baptist Cemetery about two miles south of Uehling near Hwy. 77 by relatives concerned about his absence. "There were no signs of violence on the body. He was just sitting behind the wheel." Gilmore said. "The ignition was off". Gilmore believes the man may have been in the cemetery since Monday because the station wagon was seen there Monday and acquaintances had not seen him since Monday. The small cemetery is over a hill in a field and the station wagon could not be seen from the highway, Gilmore stated. Mrs. Bernice M. Harlan entered the United States Army as a Chaplain in 1944 and was sent to Okinawa, Japan for his first overseas assignment The Woodruffs organized the Okinawa Christian Mission and served with that mission for 38 years, returning to the States in 1985. They left behind a number of Okinawan Churches of Christ, completely independent of American financial support. Much of the success of the mission program must be accredited to Emeline whose dedication and love helped to make many devoted and lifetime Okinawan friends. The Woodruffs adopted 3 Okinawan children -- a son in 1951 whom they named Dan Ray and twin girls in 1961 whom they named Annie May and Nancy Kay. Their adopted children enriched their lives on the mission field. Emeline died at her home in Eugene at 7:30 p.m. on March 8, 2004. She left behind one sister, Dorothy Pittam, of Sonoma, CA; her devoted husband, Harlan Woodruff, of Eugene, OR; one son, Dan Ray Woodruff and his wife, Bonnie, of Eugene, OR; two daughers: Annie Druse and her husband, John, of Coos Bay, OR and Nancy Toliver and her husband, Curtis, of Austin, TX; nine grandchildren: Daniel, Jonathan, Nathan, Jordan Marie, Frederick, Benjamin, Caleb, Thomas, and Donnie; and a host of friends. WOODRUFF, HARLAN ****************************************************************** Obituary - Sherman Woodruff Dates = 9-30-1912 - 2-4-2003 Sherman lead a wonderful full life that began with his birth in Uehling, NE where he was joined by brothers Harlan Woodruff and Leo Woodruff and sisters Eunice Phelps and Rose Shelley. On August 3, 1938 in Ft. Morgan, Colorado he married Josephine Stretesky who later died April 8, 1981. He married Marian J. Endicott on July 22, 1983 in Eugene, Oregon. He had two children, Rick Woodruff, of Bellingham, WA and Paula Hall of Kirkland, WA and two step children, David Endicott of Redmond, OR and Carol Wheeler of Eugene, OR. He had 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Sherman loved salmon fishing, antiques, and watching Mariners baseball; but more than anything he loved His Lord and Savior with whom he is surely now rejoicing in heaven. He will be greatly missed. Yager, 88, of Fremont, died Tuesday, July 25, 1995, at Arbor Manor in Fremont. Goldie Larson was born Nov. 26, 1906 in Oakland and moved to Fremont at age 7. She graduated from Fremont High School and worked at the Nebraska Ordance Plant in Mead. She also worked at Schweser's Department Store for 21 Years, before retiring in 1971. She was a member of Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont. She is survived by three daughters, Adeline Walrath of Keokuk, Iowa, Marian (Mrs. Norman) Larsen of Virginia Beach, Va., and Shirley (Mrs. Bill) Calta of Fremont; nine grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-granchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and a grandson. The funeral wil be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Paul Hoffman will officiate. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
