Obituary
The Bakersfield Californian
Donald LeRoy Cowen
5/28/1933 09/12/2004
Services for Don Cowen, 71, will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
in the Mish Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Pat Roberts of Odyssey
Hospice officiating.
Don passed away early on Sunday due to heart failure. He was born
May 28, 1933 in Uehling, Nebraska and grew up in the Omaha area
where he resided with his mother, Ruth Alta Larson Cowen who died
when he was 10 years old. He was then raised by his aunt and uncle,
Eddie and Ethel Peterson along with their sons, Willard and Richard.
His grandparents, Andrew and Mary Larson were immigrants from
Sweden. Don served in the Marine Corps as a Military Policeman from
1954 to 1957 during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he
came to California in the late 50s and reunited with his brother,
Russell Dean Cowen and his father, Clyde Henry Cowen, both of whom
died in the 60s. In 1958, he began working for Cecil and Helen Tibbs
at the Tibbs School for Dogs on Stockdale Hwy. There he learned to
train bird dogs for hunting and other dogs for obedience. He later
became the owner and changed the name to Cowens Kennels. He served
over 2500 customers loyally for over 45 years, taking care of their
dogs and cats. He truly loved the people and the animals. He sold
the business and retired in June 2003.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Anita Jo Keith
Cowen, his son, Darrell, Marie, and Samantha all of Bakersfield, his
mother-in-law, Esther Keith, of Bakersfield, his brother-in-law and
his wife, Jon and Kay Keith of Bakersfield, his sister-in-law and
her husband, Mary and Henry Sullivan of Mt. Mesa, 5 nephews, Jeff
Cowen of Ukiah, David and Paul Keith of Bakersfield, Mike and Brian
Sullivan of Mt. Mesa and a niece, Tina Sullivan of Santa Maria.
Mr. Cowen was a good-natured, easy-going type of person who always
had a good word for everyone, a good sense of humor and had good
rapport with the animals he trained and cared for. He once commented
that he took care of 2 leopards that were easier to deal with than
some dogs. He collected all kinds of canes and had over 100 of them,
one with a warning horn and rear-view mirror. He also loved
westerns, especially those with John Wayne. His favorite song that
he shared with his wife was Look at Us by Vince Gill. Mr. Cowen bore
a remarkable resemblance to Jack Nicklaus, the golfer, and when on
occasion, he wore a golf shirt, people on the street would give him
a double look. He loved wildlife and had a collection of wildlife
pictures from eagles to deer. His many loyal and loving friends and
family will miss him greatly. He was a unique person and a true gem.

Biography
Andrew and Mary (Anderson/Bowman) Larson
Andrew Larson was born at Våmhus, Mora, Sweden on May 18, 1841 to
Lars and Brita (Andersdotter) Larson whose other Swedish born
children were Mait (1839-???? may have died as an infant), Oliver
(1844-1912), Carrie Lund (1847-1893), Mary Peterson (1849-1890),
and Becky Frost (1852-1916). Andrew emigrated to the USA on July
5, 1863, and his first home in America was in Chicago, IL. On
August 22, 1864 he married Mary Anderson/Bowman in Chicago.
Mary Anderson/Bowman was born in Mora, Dalarna, Sweden on January
6, 1840 to Andrew and Karin (Mattsdotter) Mattson, whose other
Swedish born children were; Martin (1835-????), Karin (1834-????),
Anna Peterson (1846-1920), and Andrew (1849-1919). Andrew Mattson
died about 1847 in Sweden, and the family emigrated to the USA in
1863. Due to the many Andersons in America they changed their name
to Bowman to minimize the conflict with the Anderson name. Andrew
and Mary Larson located in Logan Township in 1864.
In the summer of 1908 Andrew contracted blood poisoning from the
prick of a needle in one of his toes. In order to stop the spread
of the blood poisoning it was decided to amputate his foot. An
eminent Omaha surgeon was summoned to perform the operation, and
the operation was successful. However, gangrene had too much
headway and Andrew died on July 26, 1908. One of the remarkable
features of his life is that this was the first time he had ever
called upon a physician and none had ever before been called into
the family. He was buried at the Baptist Cemetery south of town.
Mary died on Oct. 15, 1924.
Andrew and Mary Larson had 6 children: (1) Lars A. Larson, born on
Sept. 14, 1864 and died on June 17, 1938. He was not married. (2)
Andrew A. Larson, born in 1870 and died on March 24, 1933. He
married Annie Anderson and they had 8 children; Vernon D., Ethel
Siemsen, Laura M., Ruth Cowen, Irving B., Lillian, Harold W., and
Edna Peterson. (3) Mary, born on Nov. 24, 1872 and died on July 9,
1933. She married Everett Holmes and they had 11 children; Harry
J., Ray S., Everett A., Marian, Gertrude Rusk, Mary Smith, Guy H.,
Ivan L., Ethel F., Edith F., and Stanley. (4) Oliver A. Larson,
born on Nov. 1, 1874 and died on Nov. 22, 1956. He married Anna
Larson and they had 6 children; Howard O., Roy O., Minnie Anderson,
Alvin E., Mabel Tronsgard, and Carroll A. (5) Peter A. Larson, born
on May 27, 1877 and died on Dec. 5, 1936. He married Ruby Mattson,
but they had no children. (6) Eric A. Larson, born on Sept. 28,

Pioneer of Dodge County is Stricken Last Friday
The community was greatly shocked when it became known that Lars A.
Larson had been found dead in his place of business shortly after
the noon hour last Friday. He had returned from his midday lunch
and opened the rear door at the implement store for Fritz Meyer to
get his car and was evidently walking back to the front end when he
was stricken with a heart attack from which he did not recover. His
lifeless body was found about 1:30 and Dr. Heyne of Hooper was
called, but life was extinct. Wollmer & Warne, funeral directors of
Hooper were called and took charge of the body and prepared it for
burial.
Lars. A. Larson was born on the old Andrew Larson homestead one
mile south of Uehling on September 14, 1864, and died in Uehling
June 17, 1938, being 73 years, 9 months and 3 days of age. He was
the first white boy born in Logan township. Upon reaching maturity
he engaged in farming, corn shelling and threshing for several
years north of Lyons in Burt county. In the fall of 1907, together
his brothers, Oliver A. and Peter A. Larson he started the erection
of the brick building in Uehling now occupied by the Larson &
Anderson general store, and in the spring of 1908 they started in
the implement business. This partnership was continued until about
1918 when Peter A. Larson severed is connection with it to enter
the garage business, and it was continued by Oliver A. and the
deceased until the time of his death.
The deceased leaves to mourn his death two brothers, Oliver A. of
Uehling and Eric A. of San Francisco, California and a number of
nieces and Nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. Two
other brothers, Andrew A. and Peter A. Larson and two sisters,
Annie and Mrs. E. L. Holmes preceded him in death. Funeral
services, which were very largely attended, were held at the
Congregational church in Uehling Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock,
