Obituary - Albert William Hartung
The Hooper Sentinel
July 18, 1935
Pioneer Resident is Laid to Rest
Slowly but steadily, the ranks of the pioneer settlers of this
community are being thinned by the scythe of death to lessen the
numbers who braved the hardships of the early day so that we may
now enjoy the fruits of their confidence in the new land. This
week it is our duty to chronicle the passing of A. W. Hartung who
died last Thursday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul
Miles, at Savanna, Ills. Infirmities due to old age are attributed
to the cause of his death. He had been in gradually failing health
the past couple of years.
His body arrived in Hooper Saturday morning and was given repose in
the Wollmer & Warne mortuary until the day of the funeral services.
These were held Sunday afternoon at the A. M. Tillman home, where a
large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay a final
tribute to a highly respected relative, friend and citizen. The
sermon was preached by Rev. A. S. Pannbacker of the Zion Lutheran
church, and music was furnished by Vernon Sanders and Donald
Shaffer with Miss Charlotte Fritz as accompanist. Pallbearers were
J. Louis Alperstedt Peter Parkert, Elmer Schwab, John Tillman,
George Uhlig and Ray Edelmaier, sons of old time friends of the
deceased. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery.
Out of town relatives here for the funeral included, Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Miles and children, Charles, Alice Ann and Edwin, of Savanna,
Ills.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Hartung and Robert of Omaha, Arthur E.

Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dietz and Mildred of Scribner; Mr. and
Mrs. N. J. Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Schreiber and Merlin, Jr.,

Vera, Prairie Home; Mr. and Mrs. Raasch, Ashland; and Merssrs. and
Mesdames Henry Paulsen, Peter Miller and family, Wm. Miller and
family, Harry Paulsen, and John Raasch, Mrs. Fred Alus and family
and Otto Paulson and son, all of Bancroft.

Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Hargens and Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Meyer, Scribner; Leo Bruse, Arapahoe, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Dewitz
and Miss Marion Dewitz, Wisner; and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kasal, Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Berg and Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Ferris, Omaha.
Albert William Hartung was born in Clyman, Dodge county, Wisc., on
May 21, 1857. In 1865, immediately after the Civil War, his father
took his family which consisted of his wife, two daughters and two
sons, and joined a group of eight families who were traveling with
teams of oxen to Nebraska. It took them six weeks to reach the
Missouri river at Council Bluffs, from where they were taken by
ferry to Omaha. The family came to Dodge county, and took a
homestead six miles northeast of the present site of Hooper. Their
first home was a sod house, and they later erected a frame house.
This is the farm now occupied by Julius Nelson.
Excepting for a few years in Omaha, from 1926 to 1929, Mr. Hartung
lived nearly his entire life in and near Hooper. He served as
postmaster under President Arthur and for over ten years served as
rural mail carrier. He was also at one time janitor of the Hooper
schools and on various occasions identified himself with the
business circles of the town. He also at times was active in
fraternal organizations and at the time of his death he held
membership in the Sons of Herman order.
In 1880 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Raasch, whose
parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Raasch, had come to Nebraska,
with the same group of families from Wisconsin in 1865. William at
that time being 8 years and Charlotte 7 years old. To this union
were born three children, Edna, now Mrs. A. M. Tillman, of Hooper,
Arthur, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Harry of Omaha. Mrs. Hartung
passed away in December of 1888 at the age of 30 years.
Three years later he married Miss Henrietta Uehling and she too
became the mother of three children, Adelle, now Mrs. M. I. Smith,
of Denver, Colo., Avillus, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Alvina, Mrs.
Paul Miles, of Savanna, Ill., with whom he had been living since
last October, and where he passed away at 10:30 p.m. last Thursday,
July 11, 1935, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 18 days.
He leaves to mourn him, his six children, nine grandchildren, one
brother, Frank of Arapahoe, Colo., and two sisters, Mrs. P. N.
Quast, of Caldwell, Idaho, and Mrs. Louise Ziesche, of Pasadena,
Calif. A nephew, W. E. Sanders, is the only other member of the
original Hartung family, except Mrs. Tillman, who now makes Hooper
his home.

Henry Paulsen
Bancroft Centennial Book ?
Page 237
Henry George Paulsen, the son of John and Maria, nee Schippman
Paulsen, was born at Meldorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, November
27, 1865. The youngest of nine children, orphaned by the death of
his mother in 1870, and his father in 1873. He came to America at
the age of twelve to make his home with an older sister, Mrs. John
Witt near Scribner, Nebraska. He was baptized, received his
Christian and elementary schooling in Germany, until he came to
this country. Here he was instructed for confirmation, in St.
John's Lutheran Church near Hooper.
After his confirmation he worked on farms in the Hooper area for a
number of years.
Eliza Raasch, the daughter of John and Barbara, nee Uehling Raasch
was born November 22, 1866, in what was then Washington County of
Territory of Nebraska, now Dodge County, Nebraska. She was baptized
and confirmed in St. Paul's Church near Hooper. The town Uehling
was named after this Uehling family.
On February 6, 1890, Henry and Eliza were married in St. John's
Lutheran Church of Hooper. After their marriage, they farmed near
Scribner, until 1896, when they moved to Cuming County, where they
purchased a farm four miles west of Bancroft. (Alvin Sorensen now
lives here.) Henry served on the school board of District 29 for
many years. Both Henry and Eliza were active and faithful members
of Zion Lutheran Church, until April 6, 1930, when they retired
from farming and moved into Bancroft, where Bill McCrory's now
reside. Here they became members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
They both were active in church work. Henry was elected as an
elder, January 14, 1932, a position he held until the time of his
death. A grandson, Vernon Albus, is now serving as an elder at St.
Paul's. He was a Cuming County Commissioner for several years, a
position another grandson, Lauren Albus now holds. Eliza was a
active member of the Ladies Aid.
Tragedy struck this family in December of 1929, when after only
four years of marriage to Dorothy, nee Schmidt, their son Lorenz
passed away, leaving Dorothy with three small children to care for.
In February 1934, Henry and Eliza went to live with their son Otto,
on a farm four miles southwest of Bancroft. Death had deprived Otto
of his young wife Violet, at the age of twenty-two years. Henry
and Eliza were to assume care of his infant son and of the
household.
Eliza became ill January of 1938. In November they moved back to
their home in Bancroft, where she fell peacefully asleep February
13, 1939, at the age of 72 years. Henry continued to live in
Bancroft and had a busy life, until he suffered a stroke and became
bedfast. On Tuesday afternoon, March 21, 1950, Bancroft lost one

Biography - Vivian Raasch Perez
The Bancroft Centennial Book
John and Pauline Raasch moved to Bancroft in March of 1922 with
their nine children - - - - - was born.
The family in order of birth are Harold, Beatta, John, Eugene,
Waldo, Vernita, Vivian, Leroy, Bernice, and ELaine. As of 1983, all
are still living with five in Nebraska and five in California.
Mother and Dad are buried in the Bancroft Cemetery.
Ours was a happy family and often during childhood days there were
as many as twenty or more eating at our table. How our parents
worked to support us and helped others! Dad and the boys worked in
the fields and had a dairy. We had a milk cart drawn by a blind
horse who was called Blind Billy. That horse knew just which house
was a customer's and could have delivered the milk alone.
Mon, with the help of the girls, canned everything from the garden;
sitting on the back porch shelling peas was a summer routine.
We slaughtered pork and had a smoke house for curing ham, sausage,
and bacon. Often we could be found along country roads picking
choke cherries, elderberries, and wild plums for jellies and jams.
Everything was put to use, even the ice on the Dredge was cut and
stored in a building we called the "ice house". The front of the
building was used as a play house for the children and Dad made rag
rugs on a loom he kept there. We cut up strips of old clothing and
rolled it into tight balls.
One tragic time was when polio struck during the epidemic of 1925.
We were fortunate for I was the only one to get it. That day,
Doctor Heacock rushed down the hill, after treating me for
influenza, and said, "Flag the train, a voice just told me Vivian
has polio. We'll have to get her to Omaha." My spine was tapped
and my life saved! Everyone rallied around us and my mom took such
good care of me during all those months of recuperation. I did not
walk for a year.
Years later when I taught at the Dixon School southeast of Bancroft,
Mom wanted a dress which cost nearly $25.00 and I spent half a
month's salary to buy it for her. It was a wine colored embossed
velvet. She is wearing it in the picture.
At the Dixon School, I had eight pupils. Their names were Edwin
Tarbutton, Don Carlbert, Marilyn Swanson, Burnell Swanson, Elizabeth
Browning, Doris Hammel, Myra Gatzemeyer and Deloise Gatzemeyer.
That was in 1938 and my last full year of residency in Bancroft, for
from there I went to Wayne State Teachers College, then to Los
Angeles, California and worked at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where I
met Tom. I returned to Nebraska and finished a school year teaching
near Meadow Grove, on to Chicago until World War II in 1941,
returned to California in January of 1942 and changed my career to
bookkeeping. On December 21, 1946, Tom and I were married in San
Diego, and now, thirty-six years later, have settled in Santa Rosa,
California with our daughter Renee. She was born at the Naval
Ordinance Testing Station in China Lake, California on October 19,
1952.

Obituary
The Hooper Sentinel
March 15, 1923
Pay Final Tributes To Former Resident Here
Following a brief illness from ailments incidental to old age, Mrs.
John Raasch, one of the pioneer residents of this place, departed
this life Tuesday evening, March 6, 1923, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. H. G. Paulsen, of near Bancroft, at the age of 83
years, 11 months and 23 days. The remains were brought overland
Friday afternoon to the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church,
northwest of Hooper, where at two o'clock funeral services were
held, with the pastor, Rev. H. C. Jul. Frese, having them in
charge. They were largely attended and many followed the remains to
their last resting place in the church's cemetery.
As Barbara Uehling, deceased was born in Saxony, Germany, March 13,
1839. When still a young girl, she came to America with her
parents, locating at Watertown, Wis., which was the first home of
many of the first settlers of this community. There in 1857 she was
united in marriage to John Raasch, who preceded her in death two
years ago, and there she made her home until 1865, when the
westward trip to the new home in Nebraska was made. The family took
up a homestead north of our present city. This place, which is now
farmed by B. H. Monnich, remained her home until 1902, when she and
her husband removed to Hooper to occupy the home they had erected
in the southeast part of town and spend the sunset days of their
life in retirement and ease. A year ago last January she went up to
Bancroft to make her home with her daughter.
The passing of this beloved woman is once more a reminder that the
sturdy pioneers who helped to make this land one of plenty are fast
answering the final summons and passing to the Great Beyond. She
was a woman who through the trials of pioneering bore her lot with
much fortitude and her ever-ready willingness to lend a helping
hand in those days to neighbors in need caused her to become well
beloved by all; and so her demise is mourned by many. She was a
Christian woman, a woman dutiful to her home ties and devoted to
relatives, friends and neighbors.
She was the mother of four daughters and seven sons, two of the
former and four of the latter surviving. They are Mrs. H. G.
Paulsen of Bancroft, Mrs. Wm. Hoefner of West Point, Casper of
Prairie Home, Gottlieb of Denver, Emil of Omaha, and Henry of
Ashland. She is also survived by two sister, Mrs. August Wagner
and Mrs. John F. Meyer of Hooper, as well as over forty
grandchildren and over forty great-grandchildren.
The out-of-town relatives who came for the funeral were Mr. and
Mrs. H. G. Paulsen and son, Harry, of Bancroft; Mrs. Wm. Hoefner
and Martin Hoefner of West Point, Casper Raasch of Prairie Home,
Mrs. John Raasch, Jr., Mrs. Chas. Toelle and Mrs. Harry Nellor of
Beemer, A. E. Hartung of Wisner, and Harry Hartung and Arthur
Hoefner of Omaha. Owing to illness, her sons Gottlieb, Emil and
Henry, could not come for the funeral.

"Jason", arriving in New York on August 10, 1852.

Obituary - John Raasch

Fatally Injured
John Raasch died this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mr. Raasch was
working about the home place yesterday afternoon and about 4
o'clock a pole fell upon him striking him in the side and injuring
him internally. It was found necessary to operate on him and he
passed away during the operation. Beemer Times
The funeral was held Sunday. Those going up from here for the
services were Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Schroeder and daughter, Hilda, Mr.
and Mrs. A. M. Tillman, Mrs. Aug. Wagner, Mr. and Mrs. Harry J.
Kroeger, Mrs. Geo. Rabe, Henry Raasch, John F. Meyer, and Albert
and C. W. Wagner.
Note: Agatha Schulz makes the following comment about the above
obituary of her father;
"My father, John C. Raasch, was not injured at home but while
helping a friend on their farm, March 8, 1917, he died that same
day."
Death of John Raasch
Just as we were closing the forms last Thursday the news came that
John Raasch, an old-time, well-respected citizen of this place, had
died. The hour was so late that it was impossible to tell any of
the facts and we had no time to investigate, therefore only a
general statement was made. Mr. Raasch met death in a very peculiar
manner and most suddenly. The family are grief-stricken beyond
words to express and in fact his illness was so short that the
whole matter seems more like a dream than a reality.
Mr. Raasch was injured in an accident while on the Jacob Hagedorn
place just west of town. He had been assisting Mr. Hagedorn in the
dehorning of some cattle and they were almost through with the job
when the accident happened. A critter had been driven into the
dehorning chute for being dehorned and was inclined to lie down in
the chute and to avoid such things a small pole was used to poke
through underneath the critter and passed through a small hole on
the opposite side, thus keeping the critter up during the process.
Mr. Raasch attempted to shove this pole through the stanchion and
when about through the animal came down on it rather suddenly and
the end to which Mr. Raasch had held came up and struck him in the
abdomen low down on the right side. Mr. Raasch did not pay much
attention to the incident and went on about his work, completing
the work on this animal and the dehorning the last animal, a small
heifer, before he noticed anything particularly wrong. He grew
faint, however, and went into the barn and lay down for a few
moments, thinking he would be all right shortly but he gradually
became worse and Mr. Hagedorn insisted that he go into the house
and lie down, which he did and he was given a stimulant and for a
time felt much better and as he was through dehorning for the day,
Mr. Hagedorn hitched up and brought him home. He dismounted from
the wagon and went into the house and announced that he had got
hurt and that it was nothing serious only he felt a little faint
and he lay down. Soon his condition became more serious and about
6 o'clock, barely two hours after the incident, a physician was
called but it could not be determined just what was the real
trouble. Later, however, physicians from Fremont were called and
upon examination it was discovered he had bursted an intestine,
which had been caused by the force of the blow from the pole at the
dehorning chute. It was further decided that the only possible
hope of saving his life was a surgical operation but he passed away
before this could be accomplished. No blame whatever is attached
to Mr. Hagedorn in any way. Everything about the dehorning chute
and all tools used were in first-class condition and the pole was
not inferior nor did it break when the strain was placed upon it by
the animal. It was just one of those indescribable accidents for
which nobody cam be blamed. Mr. Hagedorn did all in his power to
relieve the man and offered every possible assistance. He is a
very careful and painstaking farmer and keeps everything up nicely
on his place. The accident happened thru no negligence on his
part.
John Raasch was born June 1, 1862, and died at his home in Beemer,
March 8th, 1917, aged 54 years, 9 months and 7 days . He was a son
of John and Barbara Raasch and came to this county from Hooper some
thirty years ago. In 1883 he was married at Hooper to Sophia Sass
on August 24th of that year, and to this union were born nine
children, John, Martha, wife of Charles Toelle, Ida, wife of Harry
Nellor, Barbara, wife of Wm. Mahnke, Lenore, wife of Emil Schultz,
Victor, Adolph, Ina and Agatha, the latter four being at home and
the others being residents of the surrounding community. One
child, Hedwig, died some years ago. The near relatives surviving
besides his wife and children are five brothers and two sisters,
Henry at Ashland, Gottlieb, Emil and Fred of Fremont, and Casper of
South Dakota, Mrs. Paulsen of Bancroft and Mrs. Mary Heofener of
Pierce.
Mr. Raasch had been a resident of this county for thirty years,
living in Beemer most of that time with the exception of three
years when he resided on a farm. He also followed the carpenter
trade to some extent. He was a member of the German Lutheran church
of this place and in fact was a charter member of the local
organization of which he remained a faithful and consistent member
throughout the remainder of his life.
The funeral services were held from the Lutheran church in this
city Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, March 11th. The Rev. J. H.
Tagler, the family pastor, conducting the services which were very
impressive. The casket was fairly smothered in flowers and the
church was by no means large enough to contain the sympathizing
friends and mourners, there being many more people outside than
inside the building. The pallbearers were Sam Reich, Wm. Wendt,
Fred and Carl Krueger, Fred Siebrandt and August Raabe . Interment
was made in the Beemer cemetery.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were many, but among
those noted were Mrs. Gus Lillian, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Sass, Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Krueger, Mrs. August Wagner, John Myer, Mr. and Mrs. John
Schroeder, and Mrs. Lida Raabe, all of Hooper, the old home and old
time friends and relatives of the deceased, and Emil Heofner and
family from Pierce. The bereaved family are extended heart-felt
sympathy.

John Gottlieb Raasch
The Bancroft Centennial Book ?
John and Pauline Raasch
John Gottlieb Raasch, oldest of ten children, was born March 16,
1884 to John Christian Raasch and his wife Sophia Maria Sass of
Hooper, Nebraska. He moved with his parents to a farm north of
West Point, but a fire and grasshoppers soon had them moving to the
town of Beemer.
John attended the Beemer Schools and worked at the Beemer Telephone
Company as the night operator and was janitor for St. John's
Lutheran Church. He was the catcher for the Rock Creek Baseball
team. At a carnival in Beemer, he met his future wife, Pauline
Henrietta Rabe, daughter of August and Louise Krueger Rabe. Pauline
attended St. John's Parochial School, and as their farm home was
across the Elkhorn River, her mother rowed the children across
twice daily. In the wintertime they skated across.
John and Pauline were married on April 20, 1905 by Pastor Mesko at
St. John's Church, southwest of Beemer. After their marriage, they
lived in Beemer and John worked as a brickmaker with his father who
owned the Beemer Brickyards. They later moved to the Duke Miller
farm southwest of Beemer. Mother's father gave them a team of
horses and cattle, but some of the cattle broke through the ice on
the Elkhorn and were lost.
On March 1, 1922, they decided to move to Bancroft. Dad drove a
"Stearns Knight" car - - - the Moody-Burke farm, now Lorenze
Ronnenkamp's. The next day he and relatives drove the livestock to
Bancroft, walking all the way. The next day Dad took all nine
children uptown and bought them a new pair of shoes. In 1923,
another baby was born and the family was complete.
When we first came, the old depot sat southeast of the farm and was
used as a horse barn. The old West Hotel was used for grain
storage. Later the hotel was torn down and a corn crib, chicken
house and hog barn were built with the used lumber. In the
twenties, Dad bought the dairy from Clinton Copple, and ran it for
many years.
In 1948 Dad purchased a tavern from Mike Schandeman and Heine
Jenson. In 1951, Dad and Mother moved from the farm to an apartment
above the tavern, later called "Raasch's Bar".
Mother and Father were active in St. Paul Lutheran Church. Dad
served in various offices and Mother was a member of the women's
societies and especially enjoyed the "Quilting Circle". Mother was
a very talented creative person.
On April 20, 1958 Mother and Dad celebrated their Golden Wedding
Day. All ten of their children and nearly all of the grandchildren
came. Their children are; Harold, Bancroft; Beatta (Mrs. Fred
Sass), Blair; John, Terra Bella, California; Eugene, Bellflower,
California; Waldo, Bancroft; Bernita (Mrs. John Whitlock), Burbank,
California; Vivian (Mrs. Thomas Perez, Santa Rosa, California;
Leroy, San Bruno, California; Berniece (Mrs. William Copple),
Bancroft; and Elaine (Mrs. Harlan Zimmerman), Bancroft.
They have 29 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-
great-grandchildren. Mother went to her heavenly home on August
27, 1967 an Dad joined her on May 4, 1974.

Obituary - August M. Tillman
The Hooper Sentinel
July 21, 1955
Death came early Saturday morning to claim August M. Tillman, one
of Hooper's most influential and prominent citizens. A life long
resident of Hooper, Mr. Tillman had been president of the First
Nation Bank of Hooper since 1904, and went to the bank daily until
about a month ago, when his health no longer permitted. His
passing is profoundly mourned by a wide circle of friends and
business associates, who held him in high esteem. Mr. Tillman was
a fine Christian gentleman, honest and honorable in all respects.
He had a high standard of ethics, and a keen business sense, and as
president of the Bank, did much to help build this community to
prosperity.
The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday at Grace
Lutheran church, with Rev. Richard Schricker in charge. In memory
of Mr. Tillman, and as a mark of respect for his family, all Hooper
business houses were closed during the funeral hour. The floral
and memorial tributes were unusually numerous and beautiful, and
were a lovely tribute to the memory of Mr. Tillman.
Donald Shaffer sang, accompanied by Mrs. J. B. Schiessler, and
pallbearers were Roy Bott, Wm. Hargens, John Shaffer, DR. G. H.
Harman, Clarence Dahl, and Ray Edelmier. Interment was in the
Hooper Cemetery.
Mr. Tillman, who had almost reached his 85th birthday, was born
August 1, 1870, in Ridgeley Township, Dodge County, the son of
pioneer parents, Frank M. and Anna Tillman. He attended the Hooper
Public Schools, and had resided here his entire life with the
exception eight years. The family resided four years in San
Antonio, Texas and four years in Omaha.
Mr. Tillman had been president of the First National Bank of Hooper
since 1904. He was a member of Grace Lutheran church, and was
active in all civic affairs. He was a member of the Hooper
Commercial Club and the Lions Club.
On August 2, 1893, he was married to Mathilda Von Essen. Two
children were born to this union, Luella Monnich of Pasadena,
Calif., and Cornelius, who died while in service in World War I, on
Jan. 24, 1918. Mrs. Tillman preceded her husband in death on August
8, 1896.
On May 27, 1908, Mr. Tillman was united in marriage with Edna
Hartung Uehling at Chicago. To this union was born one daughter,
Auralea, now Mrs. Clarence Nelsen of Lincoln. Mrs. Tillman passed
away Aug. 20, 1948. Mr. Tillman is survived by his two daughters,
three grandsons, and a sister, Mrs. Ed Wiekhorst, of Santa Ana,
Calif.

Obituary - Edna Hartung Tillman
The Hooper Sentinel
August 28, 1947
Last Rites Held for Mrs. Tillman
Residents of the Hooper community were shocked and profoundly
saddened by the death of Mrs. A. M. Tillman last Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Tillman lived only a few hours after the family car, which she
was driving, was hit broadside by a gasoline transport, as she
drove across the highway from the bus depot at the Wagner Super
Service Station. Mrs. Tillman was thrown from the car by the force
of the impact. She was taken to the hospital in Fremont
immediately, and there was claimed by death nine hours after the
accident. Mrs. Tillman was one of Hooper's best loved women, and
was respected for her fine instincts and ideals. She was devoted
wife and mother, and she gave her influence and support to church
and civic organizations, contributing much toward their progress
and welfare.
Rev. Paul deFreese conducted a prayer service for the family at the
home Saturday morning, after which Mr. Tillman was taken back to
the hospital in Fremont in the ambulance. Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Ring
accompanied him and stayed with him the rest of the day. The
service from the home at 1:30 p.m. was followed by rites at Grace
Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. deFreese. Donald Shaffer sang,
accompanied by Miss Lois Stigile. The pallbearers were Roy E. Bott,
George H. Looschen, Edwin Miles. J. L. Alperstedt, Ray Edelmaier,
and William Hargens. Interment was in the Hooper cemetery. Wollmer
& Warne were in charge.
Hooper business houses were closed during the funeral hour, in
loving memory of Mrs. Tillman, and as a mark of respect for the
family. The church was filled to capacity in the main auditorium,
the Sunday School room, and the basement auditorium. The many
beautiful floral offerings and spiritual bouquets were an evidence
of the high esteem in which Mrs. Tillman was held.
Mrs. A. M. Tillman, daughter of the late A. W. Hartung and
Charlotte Raasch Hartung, was born at Hooper, Nebr., Febr. 3, 1881,
and passed away in a Fremont hospital at 11:25 p. m., Aug. 20,
1947, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 17 days.
Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, she attended church
and public schools in this community, where she grew to young
womanhood. Following the death of her young husband, Henry Uehling,
she entered Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago. Upon
graduation she was united in marriage to August M. Tillman on May
27, 1908 in Chicago.
Mr. and Mrs. Tillman established their home in Hooper where, with
the exception of four years residence in Omaha and four years in
San Antonio, Texas, they spent their married life of almost 40
years.
During these years, Mrs. Tillman was active in church, community
and civic affairs, holding various offices in the women's
organizations of Grace Lutheran church, of which she was a longtime
member. She was a past president of the Hooper Womans Club, and
during World War I she headed the Hooper chapter of the American
Red Cross, giving many hours of her time, even after the loss of a
beloved stepson, Cornelius, who died in service.
In the late years of her life, her health was frail and her
activities consequently lessened, but she maintained her interest
in her family and many friends. Her kindly sympathy and
willingness to share in the joys and sorrows of other will be
greatly missed in this community where so much of her life was
spent.
Surviving besides the bereaved husband are her daughter, Mrs.
Auralea Nelsen, Lincoln; two grandsons, Stephan and Randall Nelsen;
a step-daughter and her son, Mrs. Luella Monnich and Cornelius of
Pasadena, Calif.; three brothers, Harry of Compton, Calif.; Arthur
of Rock Rapids, Ia., Avillus of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs. Paul K.
Miles of Savanna, Ill., and Mrs. Harry Moore of Hot Springs, S. D.
Relatives called to Hooper by the passing of Mrs. A. M. Tillman
were Mr. and Mrs. Avillus Hartung and daughter, Omaha; Mrs. and
Mrs. Harry Moore, Hot Springs, S. D.; and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Hartung of Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Mrs. Paul K. Miles, daughter Ann, and sons Edward and Charles and
the latter's wife, all of Savanna, Ill., came Thursday forenoon
after an all night drive, following word of the death of Mrs.
Miles' sister, Mrs. A. M. Tillman.
Also here for the services were many more family connections and
friends from less distant points, Fremont, Omaha, Lincoln, Wisner,
and towns of this surrounding area.

Death: Aug. 26, 2003
Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA
I had my Grammy in my life for 29 years, one month, 17 days. I miss
her very much and I know I will think of her daily for the rest of
my life.
When I was 8, I moved 600 miles away with my parents to Colorado. My
Grammy and I still kept in touch often. Originally, my Poppy and I
were the closest, but as I got older and started to become a woman,
my Grammy and I became tight. My Grammy knew all of my secrets. I
could talk to her about anything and everything. Sometimes she would
talk non-stop, but her talking is what I miss about her the most. My
Grammy showed great strength through her life after losing both of
her sons, me moving away and her 2 year battle with cancer. She
taught me what it's like to be a true lady and what unconditional
love looks like. This beautiful woman was not only my Grandmother,
but my best friend. I absolutely cannot wait to see her again.

Was the youngest child of Charlie and Martha (Raasch) Toelle.
Married Bernice Madeline
Gundersen 2/18/1950.
My Poppy was the greatest man who lived. I have so many fond
memories of him. When I was a little girl, I looked up to him so
much that I wanted to marry him when I got older. My Grammy would
always say "Oh! You can't marry your Poppy!" or "Your Poppy is no
saint you know!" To me, he was an earthly angel who had a heart of
gold. One of the last things he said to me a month before he died
was "Kimmy, I will never hurt you, but one day I am going to hurt
you. I am going to hurt you when I die." I replay that in my head
over and over again...he was absolutely correct...he never did hurt
me (other than when he died). I am so proud to be his granddaughter.
Poppy, I miss you like crazy and I always will.
