Frida Uehling & Thomas Fox Wedding
The Hooper Sentinel
Feb. 4, 1897
Married
A very pretty wedding was solemnized last Saturday night at the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Martin Uehling in east Hooper; when
their daughter Frida was married to Mr. Thomas Fox of Scribner in
the presence of a number of intimate friends and neighbors.
Promptly at 7:30 o'clock, to the strain's of the wedding march
played by Miss Cora Sanders the bridal party proceeds to the door
of spacious parlors where the groomsman and bridesmaid formed an
arch under which the bride and groom passed to the station of the
officiating minister Rev. Grauenhorst, where the words were said
that united for life the fortunes of the happy couple.
The bride was attired in white brocaded silk with a handsome wreath
of orange blossoms and veil. The bridesmaid Miss Edna Hartung wore
a gown of cream nuns veiling and almost out shown the bride in
loveliness. The groom and his best men were attired in the
conventional dress suit.
Mr. Fox is a comparative stranger here, but where known enjoys the
reputation of an upright, energetic man. The Sentinel extends
congratulations and hopes they may find in their wedded estate the
realization of every expected joy.
FOX, FRIDA ****************************************************************** Obituary - Albert William Hartung The Hooper Sentinel July 18, 1935 Pioneer Resident is Laid to Rest Slowly but steadily, the ranks of the pioneer settlers of this community are being thinned by the scythe of death to lessen the numbers who braved the hardships of the early day so that we may now enjoy the fruits of their confidence in the new land. This week it is our duty to chronicle the passing of A. W. Hartung who died last Thursday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul Miles, at Savanna, Ills. Infirmities due to old age are attributed to the cause of his death. He had been in gradually failing health the past couple of years. His body arrived in Hooper Saturday morning and was given repose in the Wollmer & Warne mortuary until the day of the funeral services. These were held Sunday afternoon at the A. M. Tillman home, where a large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay a final tribute to a highly respected relative, friend and citizen. The sermon was preached by Rev. A. S. Pannbacker of the Zion Lutheran church, and music was furnished by Vernon Sanders and Donald Shaffer with Miss Charlotte Fritz as accompanist. Pallbearers were J. Louis Alperstedt Peter Parkert, Elmer Schwab, John Tillman, George Uhlig and Ray Edelmaier, sons of old time friends of the deceased. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery. Out of town relatives here for the funeral included, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miles and children, Charles, Alice Ann and Edwin, of Savanna, Ills.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Hartung and Robert of Omaha, Arthur E. Hartung and Margaret of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Frank Hartung, Arapahoe, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dietz and Mildred of Scribner; Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Schreiber and Merlin, Jr., Wisner; Mr. and Mrs. Casper Raasch and Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin and Vera, Prairie Home; Mr. and Mrs. Raasch, Ashland; and Merssrs. and Mesdames Henry Paulsen, Peter Miller and family, Wm. Miller and family, Harry Paulsen, and John Raasch, Mrs. Fred Alus and family and Otto Paulson and son, all of Bancroft. Friends from out of town included: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Edelmaier, Nickerson; Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Milverstedt and Clarence Nelson, Fremont; Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Buns, Chicago; Kenneth Crowley, Rock Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Hargens and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer, Scribner; Leo Bruse, Arapahoe, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Dewitz and Miss Marion Dewitz, Wisner; and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kasal, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Berg and Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Ferris, Omaha. Albert William Hartung was born in Clyman, Dodge county, Wisc., on May 21, 1857. In 1865, immediately after the Civil War, his father took his family which consisted of his wife, two daughters and two sons, and joined a group of eight families who were traveling with teams of oxen to Nebraska. It took them six weeks to reach the Missouri river at Council Bluffs, from where they were taken by ferry to Omaha. The family came to Dodge county, and took a homestead six miles northeast of the present site of Hooper. Their first home was a sod house, and they later erected a frame house. This is the farm now occupied by Julius Nelson. Excepting for a few years in Omaha, from 1926 to 1929, Mr. Hartung lived nearly his entire life in and near Hooper. He served as postmaster under President Arthur and for over ten years served as rural mail carrier. He was also at one time janitor of the Hooper schools and on various occasions identified himself with the business circles of the town. He also at times was active in fraternal organizations and at the time of his death he held membership in the Sons of Herman order. In 1880 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Raasch, whose parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Raasch, had come to Nebraska, with the same group of families from Wisconsin in 1865. William at that time being 8 years and Charlotte 7 years old. To this union were born three children, Edna, now Mrs. A. M. Tillman, of Hooper, Arthur, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Harry of Omaha. Mrs. Hartung passed away in December of 1888 at the age of 30 years. Three years later he married Miss Henrietta Uehling and she too became the mother of three children, Adelle, now Mrs. M. I. Smith, of Denver, Colo., Avillus, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Alvina, Mrs. Paul Miles, of Savanna, Ill., with whom he had been living since last October, and where he passed away at 10:30 p.m. last Thursday, July 11, 1935, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 18 days. He leaves to mourn him, his six children, nine grandchildren, one brother, Frank of Arapahoe, Colo., and two sisters, Mrs. P. N. Quast, of Caldwell, Idaho, and Mrs. Louise Ziesche, of Pasadena, Calif. A nephew, W. E. Sanders, is the only other member of the original Hartung family, except Mrs. Tillman, who now makes Hooper his home. HARTUNG, ALBERT WILLIAM ****************************************************************** Obituary - Henrietta Margaret Uehling Hartung The Hooper Sentinel October 12, 1922 A Life Long Resident is Called by Death With the coming of the noon hour on Monday, October 9, 1922, came also the death angel into the home of A. W. Hartung, summoning therefrom the wife and mother without whose presence a home is no longer a home in its best and truest sense. Mrs. Hartung had been in failing health for the past nine years, being a sufferer from diabetes, but so steadfast was her patience, so enduring her courage and above all so selfless her every act and thought, that only toward the end did she give up and really permit herself to become what is ordinarily considered as ill. On last Thursday she ceased being up and about the home where her quiet presence had so long held sway, and remained in the bed from which she never again arose. Even at that time, and up until Sunday her condition was not considered as critical by those in attendance, but on Sunday noon she entered into a state of coma which gave indication that the end was fast approaching. From then on her decline was rapid and she passed peacefully away at noon the following day. Henrietta Margaret Uehling, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Martin Uehling, was born on the Uehling homestead five miles north of town on December 7, 1870, and during the 51 years, 10 months and 2 days of her life on this earth was a continuous resident of this place and vicinity. Mrs. Hartung was a woman whose first thought was the welfare of her home and family and the aid and comfort of her neighbors and friends, and her kindly administrations in time of need had made her most highly beloved by those with whom she cane in daily contact as well as by those who knew her less intimately. She was truly a good woman in every sense of the word. She was the same gentle, kind, loving woman every day of the year and she always had a smile and a good word for everybody. It is women such as this that makes the world better for having lived in it. So her passing leaves a vacancy which is hard to fill. On December 15, 1891, she was united in marriage to A. W. Hartung. She was the mother of four children, one of whom died in infancy, and a foster mother to the three children of her husband by a former marriage. It is not always that even the best of women can so completely take a lost mothers's place in the hearts of children as Mrs. Hartung took in the hearts of her three step-children, Mrs. A. M. Tillman of Hooper, Arthur Hartung of Wisner, and Harry Hartung of Omaha. Her other surviving children are Mrs. Adella Galladay of Fullerton, Mrs. Alvina Miles of Savanna, Ill. and Avillus, all of whom were here when the end came. Besides these children she is survived by the sorrowing husband and a father and by three sisters; Mrs. John Erb, of Atkinson; Mrs. Henry Munderloh, of Orchard, who was also here at the end; and Mrs. J. J. Fletcher, of Minneapolis; and two brothers, E. M. Uehling, of this place, and R. F. Uehling, of Plymouth, Ill., who came to Hooper Tuesday morning. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon with services at 1 o'clock at Grace Lutheran church, Rev. R. W. Livers preaching the comforting funeral sermon. The services were very largely attended as a memorial to the memory of one who had held the respect and esteem of all. A large concourse followed the remains to their resting place in the local cemetery. HARTUNG, HENRIETTA ****************************************************************** Obituary - Paul K. Miles The Hooper Sentinel April 9, 1953 Brother-in-law of A. M. Tillman Dies in Illinois Paul K. Miles, 61, of Savanna , Illinois, was buried Tuesday of last week, according to word received here by A. M. Tillman, a brother-in-law. Mr. Miles, who had been ill about 10 years, passed away the previous Sunday. Burial was in the Savanna cemetery family lot. He is survived by his wife, the former Alvina Hartung of Hooper; two sons and one daughter. MILES, PAUL K. ****************************************************************** Obituary - Mrs. Henry Munderloh The Hooper Sentinel May 21, 1953 Former Hooperite Dies at San Diego A. M. Tillman received word this week of the death of Mrs. Henry Munderloh, 82, at San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Munderloh was a former well known Hooper resident and a twin sister of the late Mrs. A. W. Hartung. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Herman Lambrecht of San Diego, and a son Lawrence, now in Nebraska MUNDERLOH, CATHERINE C. ****************************************************************** Obituary - Henry Munderloh The Hooper Sentinel January 12, 1939 Death Calls Former Resident Henry Munderloh Dodge County relatives received word Friday of the death from pneumonia at 9 o'clock that morning of Henry Munderloh, former Hooper business man, at San Diego, Calif. Mr. Munderloh is survived by his wife, who is a daughter of the late J. Martin Uehling, a son, Lawrence, of Osmond, and a daughter, Mrs. Herman Lambrecht of San Diego. The Munderlohs, who left Hooper some 30 years ago, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last fall. Mrs. A. M. Tillman, who received the death message, states that they had word of his illness at Christmas time but he was then thought to be improving. In the passing of Mr. Munderloh, death struck twice in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Milverstedt of Fremont, the latter being his sister, who lost her son, Edgar Buns, earlier in the week. Funeral services for Mr. Munderloh were held at San Diego on Monday. MUNDERLOH, HENRY ****************************************************************** Obituary - Gladys Fox O'Connor The Hooper Sentinel June 8, 1922 Mrs. A. W. Hartung and E. M. Uehling were distinctly shocked Monday morning when they received the news that their niece, Mrs. J. E. O'Connor, had passed away that morning at Fremont, following an illness of since last Thursday from appendicitis. Though never a resident of Hooper, she was well known to a good many of our people and to these friends her death also came as a surprise. She was 24 years of age and is survived by her husband, John O'Connor, daughter, Jacqueline; her father, Tom Fox, of Fremont, and mother, Mrs. J. Fletcher, of Minneapolis. The funeral will be held this morning. O'CONNOR, GLADYS FOX ****************************************************************** Obituary - Edna Hartung Tillman The Hooper Sentinel August 28, 1947 Last Rites Held for Mrs. Tillman Residents of the Hooper community were shocked and profoundly saddened by the death of Mrs. A. M. Tillman last Wednesday evening. Mrs. Tillman lived only a few hours after the family car, which she was driving, was hit broadside by a gasoline transport, as she drove across the highway from the bus depot at the Wagner Super Service Station. Mrs. Tillman was thrown from the car by the force of the impact. She was taken to the hospital in Fremont immediately, and there was claimed by death nine hours after the accident. Mrs. Tillman was one of Hooper's best loved women, and was respected for her fine instincts and ideals. She was devoted wife and mother, and she gave her influence and support to church and civic organizations, contributing much toward their progress and welfare. Rev. Paul deFreese conducted a prayer service for the family at the home Saturday morning, after which Mr. Tillman was taken back to the hospital in Fremont in the ambulance. Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Ring accompanied him and stayed with him the rest of the day. The service from the home at 1:30 p.m. was followed by rites at Grace Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. deFreese. Donald Shaffer sang, accompanied by Miss Lois Stigile. The pallbearers were Roy E. Bott, George H. Looschen, Edwin Miles, J. L. Alperstedt, Ray Edelmaier, and William Hargens. Interment was in the Hooper cemetery. Wollmer & Warne were in charge. Hooper business houses were closed during the funeral hour, in loving memory of Mrs. Tillman, and as a mark of respect for the family. The church was filled to capacity in the main auditorium, the Sunday School room, and the basement auditorium. The many beautiful floral offerings and spiritual bouquets were an evidence of the high esteem in which Mrs. Tillman was held. Mrs. A. M. Tillman, daughter of the late A. W. Hartung and Charlotte Raasch Hartung, was born at Hooper, Nebr., Febr. 3, 1881, and passed away in a Fremont hospital at 11:25 p. m., Aug. 20, 1947, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 17 days. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, she attended church and public schools in this community, where she grew to young womanhood. Following the death of her young husband, Henry Uehling, she entered Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago. Upon graduation she was united in marriage to August M. Tillman on May 27, 1908 in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Tillman established their home in Hooper where, with the exception of four years residence in Omaha and four years in San Antonio, Texas, they spent their married life of almost 40 years. During these years, Mrs. Tillman was active in church, community and civic affairs, holding various offices in the women's organizations of Grace Lutheran church, of which she was a longtime member. She was a past president of the Hooper Womans Club, and during World War I she headed the Hooper chapter of the American Red Cross, giving many hours of her time, even after the loss of a beloved stepson, Cornelius, who died in service. In the late years of her life, her health was frail and her activities consequently lessened, but she maintained her interest in her family and many friends. Her kindly sympathy and willingness to share in the joys and sorrows of other will be greatly missed in this community where so much of her life was spent. Surviving besides the bereaved husband are her daughter, Mrs. Auralea Nelsen, Lincoln; two grandsons, Stephan and Randall Nelsen; a step-daughter and her son, Mrs. Luella Monnich and Cornelius of Pasadena, Calif.; three brothers, Harry of Compton, Calif.; Arthur of Rock Rapids, Ia., Avillus of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs. Paul K. Miles of Savanna, Ill., and Mrs. Harry Moore of Hot Springs, S. D. Relatives called to Hooper by the passing of Mrs. A. M. Tillman were Mr. and Mrs. Avillus Hartung and daughter, Omaha; Mrs. and Mrs. Harry Moore, Hot Springs, S. D.; and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hartung of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Mrs. Paul K. Miles, daughter Ann, and sons Edward and Charles and the latter's wife, all of Savanna, Ill., came Thursday forenoon after an all night drive, following word of the death of Mrs. Miles' sister, Mrs. A. M. Tillman. Also here for the services were many more family connections and friends from less distant points, Fremont, Omaha, Lincoln, Wisner, and towns of this surrounding area.
