Obituary - Anna Catharina Uehling Meyer

The Hooper Sentinel

Mrs. John F. Meyer Called by Death

Funeral services for Mrs. John F. Meyer, who passed away Sunday
noon at the home of her grandson, Wilford Stroh, Omaha, will be
held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Zion Lutheran church
with Rev. W. J. Wolff conducting the rites for this long time
member of the congregation.

Anna Catharina Uehling, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John
Uehling, and the last of the nine children who comprised this well
known pioneer family, was born August 9, 1858, near Watertown,
Wisc., and came with her parents to this community in 1864. Her
death occurred on Nov. 14, 1943, at the age of 85 years, 3 months
and 5 days.

She was united in marriage on December 14, 1877, to John F. Meyer,
who preceded her in death on March 28, 1941. The couple had no
children of their own but an adopted daughter Mrs. Louis Stroh,
Jr., passed away Nov. 1, 1935.

Since her recovery from an illness following the death of her
husband, Mrs. Meyer had mostly made her home with the families of
her grandchildren in Omaha, Wilford Stroh, at whose home she passed
away, Mrs. Arzelia Davis, and Vernus Stroh all of whom survive her
as do also four great-grandchildren and a number of nephews, nieces
and other more distant relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyer made their home in Hooper for the last 35 years
of their long married life of 63 years, following their retirement
from their farm seven miles northeast of Hooper in 1905, their
permanent residence here being terminated by the death of the
husband and the requirement of care with old age for the wife.

Funeral arrangements are in charge of Wollmer & Warne and burial
will be in Hooper cemetery.

Biographical Sketches of Pioneer Men Now Living in Hooper

Mrs. John F. Meyer

Miss Catharine Uehling was born at Watertown, Wis., August 9, 1858.

She came to Nebraska and to Dodge county with her parents and a
number of other families, ox teams and wagons being the means of
transportation, in 1865. They lived in a sod house on her father's
homestead just north west of Hooper. Indians and prairie fires
were among their greatest troubles the first few years.

She was married to John F. Meyer, Dec. 14, 1877. They rented a
farm north of town of Henry Rupert for three years then purchased
the Drue Kreader farm, 7 miles north-east of here where they lived
until thirteen years ago when they removed to the south-east part
of our little city where they still live.

They have an adopted daughter, Mrs. Louis Stroh, Jr., of Hooper.

The John F. Meyer's 61st Anniversary

Next week Wednesday, Dec. 14 will be a memorable day in the lives
of one of Hooper's oldest and most highly respected couple, Mr. and
Mrs. John F. Meyer, for it was on that date just 61 years ago that
they were united in marriage. A marriage of 61 years of duration is
something which few married couple are privileged to live to enjoy,
and when both the husband and the wife are in good health with all
of their mental facilities alert and unimpaired, then it is indeed
an occasion for congratulations and rejoicing.

Recently we called on Mr. and Mrs. Meyer and from them we obtained
the following facts relating to their life history:

John F. Meyer, 85, was born in Germany August 24, 1853, and came to
this country in 1875 and to Dodge county about a year later. His
good wife, 80, who was formerly Anna Catharina Uehling, was born
near Watertown, Wisc., in May, 1858, and came to this community in
1864.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyer were married at the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John Uehling, on December 14, 1877, by Rev. E. J. Frese, who
was their pastor of St. Johns Lutheran church north of Hooper.

Following their marriage the young couple rented a farm which they
operated until by thrift and hard work they had saved enough to
purchase a farm of their own seven miles northeast of Hooper, the
farm now occupied by Ernest Nelson. This was their home until about
33 years ago when they retired from active farm work and came to
Hooper to reside in the comfortable home in the southeast part of
town which they occupy today.

Mrs. Meyer is the last member to survive of the well known John
Uehling family of nine children, all former residents of this
community.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Meyer was never blessed with a family of
their own, but for many years they enjoyed the love and
companionship of an adopted daughter, Laura, later on becoming the
wife of Louis Stroh, Jr., who passed away November 1, 1935 at the
age of 55 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyer have witnessed many changes in their long years
of residence in this community. As pioneers they have had their
share in the building up of a new country and have well earned
their sunset years of quiet restful living. Both are members of
Zion Lutheran church and enjoy its services, particularly the
occasional ones that are conducted in the German language.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyer have many family connections, many neighbors and
old time friends who will join with the Sentinel in wishing for
them a happy wedding anniversary next week and for many years to
come.

Obituary - John Frederick Meyer

Services Monday for John F. Meyer

John F. Meyer, pioneer resident of this community for over 65
years, passed away at his Hooper home on Friday night, March 28, at
the age of 87 years, ten months and four days. While not in the
best of health during the past year, Mr. Meyer had been bedfast for
only about a week, his aged wife also being ill during this time
and at the time of his death and burial.

John Frederick Meyer was born on May 24, 1853 at Holstein, Germany,
coming to this country in 1875 and to Dodge county about a year
later. He was married to Anna Catharina Uehling on December 14,
1877, and the couple went to farming, first as renters and later
purchasing a farm of their own seven miles northeast of Hooper
which they successfully operated until 1905, when they retired to
live in their present comfortable home in the southeast part of
town, where they spent 35 of the 63 years of their long and happily
married life.

Mr. Meyer was a member of the Lutheran church all of his life,
serving as councilman and treasurer of Zion Lutheran for almost a
decade. He witnessed many of the trials and changes of the years as
did all of our pioneer settlers, and because of hard work and
thrift he gained a competence for his old age.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyer lost their only adopted daughter, Mrs. Louis
Stroh, Jr., by death on Nov. 1, 1935, and surviving now to miss his
daily companionship are his wife, three grandchildren, Wilford and
Vernus Stroh and Mrs. Arzella Briggs, all of Omaha, and four great
grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Zion Lutheran church Monday
afternoon with a former pastor of the deceased, Rev. A. S.
Pannbacker, Lincoln, in charge. Music for the very largely attended
services was by Grace Blomendahl, organist; Mrs. Fred and Mrs. Geo
Hunteman, Clarence Wagner and Herbert Blomendahl, singers, and
Darlene Phillippe, accompanist. Acting as pallbearers were J. G.
Hunteman, John W. Urban, J. P. Harms, A. H. Keller, Henry Windhusen
and Henry Schroeder.

Services were under the direction of Wollmer and Warne and burial
was made in Hooper cemetery.

Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Stroh

At Zion Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, funeral services were
held at two o'clock for Mrs. Louis Stroh, Jr., of Fremont, who
passed away Friday afternoon, November 1, at a Fremont hospital at
the age of 55 years, 1 month and 22 days. Mrs. Stroh's death
resulted from serious complications resulting from a fall she
suffered about a month before her demise. She had been in the
hospital a couple of weeks and was seemingly on the road to
recovery until Friday when her condition suddenly became critical
and death came to her about 2:30 o'clock that afternoon.

Preceding the service here, services were held at one o'clock from
the Fremont home. The services were conducted by Rev. A. S.
Pannbacker as the officiating clergyman and a goodly number of
relatives and friends were in attendance at the services at Zion
church. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Miss Irene
Nast, Miss Grace Blomendahl, Woodrow Havekost and Clarence Wagner,
with Miss Cora Wagner as organist. Pall bearers were Henry Wagner,
J. P. Harms Henry J. Wagner, C. H. Dahl, John H. Janssen and Edw.
Wagner. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery.

Laura Stroh, nee Meyer, was born September 9, 1880, and grew to
womanhood in this place and community and was baptized and
confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Zion Lutheran church by the
late Rev. I. Grauenhorst. In her residence here she gained many
friendships among the people of this locality and word of her death
came as a shock to those near and dear to her.

She was united in marriage in July 1903, to Louis Stroh, Jr., and
then followed a number of years residence here and also in Omaha,
and for the past eight years Fremont had been her home. To this
union three children were born, Mrs. Arzella Briggs and Vernis of
Fremont and Wilford of Omaha, who with their father have the
sympathy of Hooper friends in their loss of a beloved wife and
mother. Other close surviving relatives are her aged parents, Mr.
and Mrs. John F. Meyer, of Hooper, and three grandchildren.
