Janssen’s father, Paul D. Basler, was superintendent for Papillion-La Vista School District and now three generations of his family will have attended PLSD schools. Basler legacy lives on in PLSD for three generations Ground breaks, stadium under way Principal finds PLSD a family atmopshere The Papillion-La Vista School District has seen generations of families walk through the doors of its schools. The family of Paul D. Basler is the same — a family with three generations of Papillion-La Vista students. But Basler’s family has something more — he was the superintendent for PLSD for 22 years before retiring in 1986. Basler was born on Sept. 24, 1917 in Hooper where he attended elementary and high school, graduating in 1935. He went to Creighton University on a football scholarship, then transferred to Midlands College, also on an athletic scholarship. He came from a teaching family. His mother, who graduated from Hooper in 1905, was a teacher in country school, so it probably wasn’t surprising when he received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1939 and went on to get a master’s degree and a specialist in education degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During the 1939-40 school year, Basler began teaching in Beaver Crossing. He coached basketball, football and track, and taught industrial arts. He then went to St. Edward for the 1940-41 school year. In June 1941, Basler enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a drill instructor, only serving in the United States. He married Elvera Weitzenkamp in 1942. After serving during the war, Basler taught a second semester in St. Edward and then became principal and a coach in Wausa, Neb. for a short period of time. When his daughter, Lynette (Basler) Janssen was born, he was superintendent in Beemer, Neb. and his family stayed there for eight years. In 1957, he accepted a position in Plainview in northeast Nebraska, which was a bigger school system than Papillion at that time, where he served for seven years. Then in August 1964, after Lynette’s brother graduated from Plainview, Basler moved his family to Papillion, where he took the job as superintendent. He retired in 1986 after a 39-year career in education. He and his wife remained in their home in Papillion until January 2004 when they moved to Immanuel Trinity Village in Papillion and then to The Landing in Lincoln in August 2004. Elvera passed away in 2005. Lynette graduated in 1967 from Papillion High School, which is now the location of Papillion Junior High School. She kept the family tradition alive and also went into the field of education. She said one of her favorite classes in high school was home economics and has now been a home economics teacher for 39 years, currently at Papillion-La Vista South High School. She said teaching was in her family’s blood. Lynette’s daughter, Jodi (Janssen) Harper, graduated from Papillion-La Vista High School in 1994. Jodi said she remembers her grandfather, or as she called him “Boppy”, coming to eat lunch with her when he was the superintendent. He also taught her how to swim. She then became a four-time metro and four-time state diving champion. Lynette said that her parents would follow Jodi to all of her meets. “My dad was really, really proud of that,” Lynette said. “He would introduce her: ‘This is my granddaughter, Jodi, four-time metro and state diving champion.’ So that was something he was very proud of because he’d been a coach as well as superintendent.” Basler’s favorite part of teaching was working with the children, Lynette said. “He loved children. He liked working with them and it didn’t matter whether he was a teacher or a father or grandfather, he loved to have children around, do things for them, particularly in athletics,” Lynette said. Basler died on Aug. 27, 2008, but his legacy at Papillion-La Vista will live on, not only in those he guided and taught, but through the next generation of his family as well. Jodi’s twin sons, Robert and Kyle, 6, started their first day of kindergarten at Walnut Creek Elementary on Aug. 18 just two days after their birthday. They will be in the graduating class of 2022. Jodi, who is a pharmaceutical sales representative, said that Robert and Kyle are excited to start school, which was apparent when the boys jumped up and down, cheering that reading was the class they were looking forward to the most this year. Jodi said she is excited as well for her boys to be in a PLSD school because of the great competition throughout the schools, especially between the two high schools. “I think within competition breeds better students, better athletes so I think it’s great that there is competition between the schools,” she said. “I think it makes everything better.” Lynette said her father would be proud to see three generations of his family go through PLSD. “He would think it was great. He always felt that Papillion-La Vista School District had the best quality education,” she said. “He thought that for me and Jodi, and now he’d be very pleased that the boys are going here. And that’s what he strived for in his administration too.” She said that one thing people remembered about her father was that he always wore a suit and tie, even to Nebraska Husker games. He served on the Volunteer Fire Department in Beemer, the church council in West Point, Plainview and Papillion, taught Sunday school, the American Legion Commander in Plainview, was a member of the chamber of commerce in Plainview, Isaac Walton League, Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity, Nebraska Alumni Association, and School Administrators’ Association. While in Plainview, he reorganized 12 school districts, and he and Elvera were King and Queen of Papillion Days.

KALLENBACH, JOHN ****************************************************************** WWI Letter From William Kallenbach The Hooper Sentinel August 1, 1918 Some where in England. Dear Folks: Hope this letter will find all you folks well and happy and enjoying yourselves the best you can. Pretty cool and windy here today. l have a little cold, but otherwise I am getting along my best. Pretty hard to write a letter now because I can't write all that I would like to. I could tell you lots of things that you would like too know, but that is impossible for me to do now. We are being fed British war rations, and they are a lot better than I expected. If they keep on feeding us this way right along we will get along nicely. Going out on a eight mile hike tomorrow. Just for a little exercise. Would like to get a hold of my barracks bag to get some good old American Bull Durham tobacco. This tobacco we get here only makes a good fog, but I think we will be able to get some soon. At least I hope so. How is the old town of Hooper. I suppose it is pretty dead now. The gardens here look pretty good. The potatoes are blooming and they are putting up their hay crop. Some nice looking cattle in this country and lots of grass. Some of the fields are covered with red poppies. They sure look nice. It gets daylight here pretty early in the morning. Don't know where the Hooper boys are that left with me. Expect to run across them one of these days. Have they beard from Fred Janssen yet? Where is he at now? Wrote you folks a letter yesterday and perhaps you will receive both of these at the same time. Well it is getting late and about bed time so I must close. Will write again soon. Good luck and good night. Your son and brother, Bill. My address: Private Wm. J. Kallenbach, Co B, 341 Machine Gun Bn. She passed away July 5, 2008. Preceding her in death were husbands, Junior Little, Albert Bennett, and Kenneth Leslie; and son, Eldon "Sonny" Little. She is survived by her children, Donna (Bud) Ball of Salem, Sharon (Rich) Hansen of Vancouver, Wash., Sandra "Cookie" Morriss of Salem, and Mike (Julie) Little of Grande Ronde; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Juanita of Dallas, Corky of Ft. Collins, Colo., Don of Benton City, Wash., David of Dallas, and Vonley of Salem. The family came to Oregon when Maxine was a young girl. She married and settled in Salem. Maxine moved to Vancouver, Wash. just two years ago, but Salem was always home for her. She worked as a cook and housekeeper for many years. Working for lawyers, judges, and governors, plus many other dignitaries in Salem. She was assistant manager of the Lee Apartments and she owned and operated Bennett's Antiques. She was considered one of the most respected dealers in the Willamette Valley, retiring gracefully. She was a joker and loved to laugh. She would decorate for any and all holidays, especially Christmas, once taking a limb and turning it into a work of art. She'd cook for days before each holiday, baking her famous sugar cookies, that no one could copy. Even using her recipe, they weren't the same! (Personally, I think she left something out on purpose!) We won't even mention the Chocolate Crunch. Her greatest love was her family. They brought her so much joy, yet sadness. She was always there for them, no matter what. She was known by many and loved by all. She had many different names: Mom, Old Grandma, Banana Grandma, Sis, Aunt Maxine, Max, and friend; but to us, she will always be Momma. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thurs., July 10 both at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen. Burial will follow at City View Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. H. Shippee, and Mr. Shippee, of Norfolk. Her death was due to heart trouble. SANDERS, EMMA *************************************************************************************** Obitituary - John Sanders The Hooper Sentinel March 20, 1924 PROMINENT ELEVATOR MAN DIES SUDDENLY Faithful Worker in Local Lodges and Hooper Gun Club. A Deep pall of sadness overspread Hooper and community last Thursday evening, March 13, when the news became known that John Sanders had answered the final summons at 5:15 o'clock at his home in East Hooper. Death was due to heart trouble from which he had been a sufferer for some years, the last two years showing a decided increase in the seriousness of his ailment. His final illness came upon him Wednesday morning, and although his condition was considered somewhat serious, it was not thought that death was so near at hand, and none of our people were quite prepared to hear the sad tidings so soon. On the morning of the day of death, Mr. Sanders was about his home for a short time. But in the afternoon he became worse and realizing that the end was near, he gave instructions to visiting friends as to matters concerning his personal affairs, and when death came it was to those at his bedside as if he were just closing his eyes in peaceful sleep. His work on earth had been done. Mr. Sanders was a native of Pennsylvania, having been born in Snyder county on February 2, 1865. His arrival in this locality was in 1878, making his home with his brother, Jacob, until 1886. He was united in marriage in May, 1892, to Miss Emma Rupert, who survives him, and who now has the deepest sympathy of the community as a comfort in her time of sorrow. He is also survived by one brother, Jacob, of this city, who is now the sole survivor of a family of ten children. His long residence in this community brought to him a large acquaintanceship who mourn his passing. He was a man of kindly nature and commanded the respect of all. He was ever helpful and obliging by deed and ever sympathetic and willing in time of distress of friends and neighbors. For the past fifteen years he had been in the employ of the Nye-Schneider company, holding managerships for them at West Point, Emmett, Humphrey and Hooper, taking the position here in July, 1918, following the death of the late E. M Sharrar, and during these years held the utmost confidence of his employers. He was member in good standing in Longfellow Lodge No. 89, Knights of Pythias; Francis Appleton Temple No. 39, Pythian Sisters, and Hooper Lodge Knights of the Maccabees. In the former organization he held the office of Keeper of Records and Seals for nearly five years and was one of its most faithful workers. He was also a member of the Hooper Gun Club. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, with short services at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church whose faith he accepted shortly before death came to him. The services were conducted by Rev. R. D. Winker, who was assisted by Rev. R. W. Livers of Grace Lutheran church, and were very largely attended, the church not being near adequate enough to hold the friends who were present to pay their last respects to his memory. The Pythian orders attended in a body, the Knights of Pythias having charge of the services at their departed brother's final resting place in the Hooper cemetery. The out of town relatives present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Rupert of Bloomfield, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dietz of Scribner, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Shippee of Norfolk, and J. A. Rupert of Oakdale. STROH, LOUIS JR. ****************************************************************** Obituary - Louis Stroh The Hooper Sentinel July 22, 1920 Louis Stroh at Rest One by one the old-timers of Hooper are being called to their reward. The last one to be called was Louis Stroh, whose death occurred at 1 o'clock Sunday morning, July 18, 1920, from an attach of heart trouble, which came over him about two hours before. When word of his sudden death was heralded about town Sunday morning, it came as a great shock and surprise to Hooper citizens. Although ailing for some time past, he seemed to be in good health and was to be seen about town every day. About Decoration Day he commenced to complain, but nothing serious was thought of this, and on Saturday he was about as usual, and as late as about 11 o'clock that evening he was chatting with Will Schrade at Tunberg's garage. He then left for home and as he stepped upon the porch of his home was overtaken by the attack that caused his demise. His son, Alfred, who lives next door, on hearing groans, surmised that something was wrong. He hastily dressed and went over to his father's place and there found Mr. Stroh hanging over the banister of the porch. He called his sister, Mrs. Anton Tunberg and these two were with him when the end came. The other children were also summoned, but they could not reach home in time. A doctor was called at the same time, but on reaching the bedside and examining the patient gave out the sad news that the end was not far off, and such proved to be the case, death coming to relieve him of this world's sufferings at about 1 o'clock, and thus taking away one who had been a resident of our fair city for nearly half a century, forty-seven years to be exact. His age was 67 years and 6 months. Louis Stroh was born at Kiel, Germany, January 18, 1853. At the age of seventeen he came to America, locating at Chicago. Shortly afterward Davenport, Iowa, claimed him as a resident. In December, 1872, he came to Nebraska, locating at Omaha. This place was his home but a short time, for in 1873 he came to Hooper and has since been a resident of this place. He was united in marriage in 1875 to Henrietta Kallenbach, who preceded him in death on January 21, 1919. To this union were born six children, all of whom still live and are residents of Hooper and its vicinity. Those who remain to mourn the loss of father, and the memory of whom will be ever kept are Mrs. Anton Tunberg, Mrs. C. H. Uehling, Louis, Edward and Alfred and Mrs. Tom Cushman. He is also survived by one brother, Adoph, and a large number of sorrowing friends, whose sympathies are with the bereaved children and relatives. On coming to Hooper in 1873 Mr. Stroh engaged in mason work and this he has followed, along with building contracting, ever since, but for the past few years had not been actively engaged in this work, his health not permitting of it, and a couple of years ago disposed of his interest in the firm of L. Stroh and Son to his son, Alfred. He was an expert in his trade and a large majority of the buildings of this vicinity are evidence of his craft. He was a man well respected by all and a booster for the upbuilding of this community. He was always willing to give whatever was in his power to give to that of which was a help to Hooper, and ready to go to the relief of a brother citizen in sickness or distress. Funeral services were held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the late home and at the Zion's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. Schrader having charge at both places. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery, beside the body of his late wife, and the services there were in charge of Longfellow lodge, No.89, Knights of Pythias, of which the deceased was a charter member.

UEHLING, CONRAD H. ****************************************************************** Obituary - Earl Uehling The Hooper Sentinel December 1, 1938 Former Hooper Boy Takes His Own Life Hooper relatives were greatly shocked on Monday when news of the death of Earl Uehling, son of C. H. Uehling of Herman, came to them. Death was self-inflected and occurred between six and 7:30 Monday evening while the father was at the home of a daughter for a brief period. Upon his return he found the body of his son, who had used a shot gun to end his life. The deceased, who was 36 years of age and unmarried, had never been strong and recently ill health did not permit him to work. This is thought to have caused him to become despondent. Funeral services, attended by many Hooper relatives, were held yesterday afternoon at Herman and interment was made by the side of his mother in the Herman cemetery. Besides his father he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ben West, of Herman, and by a large circle of more distant relatives. UEHLING, EARL C.
