Obituary - Charles H. Herre
The Fremont Tribune
July 11, 1922
Passed Away Sometime Early This Morning
Charles H. Herre passed away peacefully some time during the early
hours of this morning at his home, 323 North I street. Mrs. Herre
was up with him at 3:30 and he was found lying in the same position
at 7 o'clock but with life extinct. When the family physician
arrived he said that Mr. Herre had been dead probably two hours.
The deceased was as well as usual yesterday and was put on the
porch during the evening and made plans to take dinner with his
sister today. Mr. Herre had a serious illness 6 years ago with
kidney and heart trouble and never fully regained his former health
though he had been able to resume his former work until two years
ago. Since that time he had been confined to his home and was able
to be up and around most of the time, but was very feeble.
Charles Herre was a son of C. F. Herre, a pioneer tailor, and was
born at Hacketstown, N. J., Nov. 6, 1861, and came to this city
with his parents when 14 years of age and made Fremont his home
ever since. He was a stationary fireman by trade and built the
first fire under the boilers when the Fremont brewing company
opened for business. For a time he was a member of the police force
doing duty as patrolman 25 years ago. He always took a prominent
part in the affairs of the Fremont fire department and was a member
of the old Red Jackets that pumped the water in the early days.
Deceased is survived by his widow, five sons and two daughters,
Fred, Edward, George, Jake, Herb, Mrs. Henry Meadows and Mrs. Fred
Lea. All of the sons make Fremont their home excepting Jake, who
lives at Council Bluffs. He also leaves five brothers and sisters:
Mrs. Edward Uehling of Uehling; Mrs. John Cloos, Havelock; Mrs.
Elmer Steen, Iowa; Robert Herre, Norfolk; Mrs. J. T. Hairhouse and
Mrs. Marion James of this city.
The funeral will be held from Bader's chapel Thursday afternoon at
2 o'clock.
