Obituary - Gustav Herman Weigle
The Hooper Sentinel
September 14, 1939
Pioneer Farmer Called by Death
Death entered the ranks of the pioneers of this community on Monday
evening and took from it Gus Weigle a lifelong resident of this
locality and one of its best known and highly respected citizens.
His death occurred about eight o'clock and followed a lengthy
illness from a lingering ailment. His passing is sincerely
regretted by many friends and these extend deep heartfelt
condolences to the bereaved family.
The funeral which is in charge of Wollmer and Warne will be held
this Thursday afternoon, with brief services at the Weigle home at
1:30 and from Zion Lutheran church at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. A. S.
Pannbacker as the officiating minister. Interment will be made in
the Logan cemetery, four miles northeast of Hooper.
Gustave Herman Weigle, son of George and Christina (Kramer) Weigle,
pioneer settlers who came to this country in 1859, was born March
15, 1866 on the Weigle home place, two miles northeast of Hooper,
that had been his home all his life, and died September 11, 1939 at
the age of 73 years, 5 months and 27 days. Here Mr. Weigle grew to
manhood, engaging in the vocation of farming until illness caused
him to relinquish active farm work. He was a hard working man, and
enjoyed the fruitful years that nature provided for him, and
enduring with fortitude and patience the lean years which have been
the lot of farmers in the various periods of hard times that have
beset an agricultural community such as we have.
Along with his farm pursuits, Mr. Weigle also took an active part
in the affairs of the community, and had surrounded himself with a
large circle of ever lasting friendships. He was a true home man
and delighted in having his family and friends about him.
Mr. Weigle was united in marriage on January 23, 1890, to Josephine
Iten, and had not death broken this union they would have observed
their golden wedding anniversary next January. Besides this loving
helpmate of nearly 50 years, his passing is also mourned by three
daughters, Alma (Mrs. Carl Hahlbeck, Jr.), Stanton; Matilda (Mrs.
Roy Quinn), York, and Miss Louise at home, and four sons, Herman,
Stanton; Francis, Omaha; Arthur, Greely, Colo.; and Howard, Ames.
He is also survived by ten grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs.
Henry Schwab, of Hooper, who now is the last surviving member of
the pioneer Weigle family of twelve children.
WEIGLE, GUSTAVE HERMAN
