Obituary - August J. Uehling
The Hooper Sentinel

Well Know Hooper Man Dies at Crowell
Heart trouble, that followed a siege of illness, caused the death
of August J. Uehling at Crowell at 5 o'clock last Thursday morning,
April 5, at the age of 45 years, 1 month and 20 days. Although he
had been ailing for sometime his condition was not considered
critical, so notice of his death came as a surprise and shock to
Hooper relatives and friends.
Mr. Uehling was a native of this vicinity, having been born on
February 6, 1878, on the farm of his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs.
John Uehling, 4 1/2 miles west of Hooper. Here he spent his
boyhood days and grew to manhood and became very well known in our
circle of citizenship, deserving the respect that was shown him by
his acquaintances. On January 15, 1902, he was united in marriage
to Miss Lenora Weigle, who survives him, and who, with the four
sons and six daughters born to this union, are now cast in the
darkness of bereavement in the loss of a dutiful and devoted
husband and father, and who have the deep heartfelt sympathy of
this community. His death is also mourned by one brother and four
sisters, O. F. Uehling, Mrs. A. H. Keller and Mrs. P. H. Bergquist
of Hooper, Mrs. H. P. Marquardt of Fremont and Mrs. Edward Realph
of Crowell, and also by his step mother, Mrs. John Uehling, and
step sister, Mrs. C. E. Sauers of Santa Ana, Calif. After his
marriage this vicinity remained his home for several years, he and
family moving to Crowell about eight years ago.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, first with services at 12:30
at the Crowell home, the funeral party then coming overland to
Hooper for services at two o'clock at Zions Lutheran church, the
pastor Rev. J. Schrader conducting them at both places. Interment
was made in the Hooper cemetery.

Mangled Body of Young Man Found West of Hooper
This place was thrown into considerable excitement yesterday
morning when news was spread about, that the mangled body of a man
had been found along the railroad track one half mile west of town.
The gruesome discovery was made by Miss Frieda Windhusen and
sister, who were coming from home to attend school, who immediately
notified agent C. C. Cushman. As the body was in terribly mangled
condition identification would have been impossible but for a pass
book found nearby. This bore the name of the late August J. Uehling
of Crowell, and a former Hooper resident. With the discovery of
this book it was soon learned that a son Francis, had been in this
community the past couple of weeks and had on Tuesday started to
work at the brickyard. Further identification then proved that the
body was that of this young man.
How and when the accident happened is unknown, but it is presumed
that it happened sometime after 10 o'clock Tuesday night as that
was the last seen of him after making inquiries at the depot about
trains and at that time it was evident he was endeavoring to go to
his home at Crowell. The remains were gathered up and brought to
Bucholz Bros. undertaking parlors to await the arrival of the
Mother; Gus Weigle having gone to Crowell for her. On her arrival
here at noon, arrangements were made for burial that afternoon in
the Hooper Cemetery beside the body of the father who died last
year. Services were conducted by Rev. Duhrkop of Zions Lutheran
Church.
The sudden and shocking death of this young man who was but 17
years of age, comes as a hard blow to the family, as since the
death of the father he had been a great help in contributing to the
maintenance of the family. He was born in this vicinity and began
his school life in our public schools. He was generally well liked
by all who knew him as a friend and was an industrious boy. He was
survived by his mother, three brothers and six sisters, who have
the deep sympathy of the entire community in their sorrowful
affliction.

Obituary - Godfred Weigle
The Hooper Sentinel
Jan. 10, 1924
Death Claims Another of Our Early Settlers
Following a general decline in his health, during the past few
years, death came peacefully to Godfred Weigle about four o'clock
Monday morning, January 7, at the home of his brother Gust, two
miles northeast of Hooper. The death of Mr. Weigle removes from
this community, one of its real pioneer settlers, he having come to
this locality in the year 1859. Though but a child of eight when he
settled here with his parents on the homestead northeast of the
present site of Hooper, he too, had to share the trials of pioneer
days.
He had attained the age of 72 years, 3 months and 29 days; having
been born at Bittenfeld, Germany, on September 8, 1851. He came to
America with his parents in 1853, locating at Buffalo, N. Y. 1855
saw the removal of the family to Long Grove, Ill., where the home
was made until 1857; a further westward journey was made and with
oxen immigrated to the vicinity of West Point, Nebr., where they
lived until 1859; from there they moved to Dodge County, to take up
the homestead that is now the Gust Weigle farm home. Here he lived
until 1874 when he freighted to the Black Hills returning the next
spring to further make this his home.
On April 26, 1878, he was married to Frederica Dicman, to which
union two children were born, Mrs. Nora Uehling of Crowell, and
Frank, who is located in British Burma, India. 1885 to 1890 found
him living on a farm in Stanton County, again returning to Hooper
in the latter year. In 1894 he started a cigar factory here which
he successfully conducted until 1911 when he discontinued this
business and removed to Texas to engage in farming. He returned to
Hooper in 1917 and since then has made his home with his brother
Gust. He was a good hearted man and during his residence in Hooper,
He was always willing to give his time and money for the best
interests of our city, and extend a helping hand to friends in time
of distress. His passing is regretted by all friends.
Besides the two children, he is also survived by three sisters,
Mrs. Paulina Schwab and Mrs. Henry Schwab and Mrs. Adam Schwab of
Ft. Lupton, Colo., and two brothers, John and Gust, of Hooper, and
ten grandchildren. Funeral services for the deceased were held
yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at the Weigle home and at 10:30 at
Zions Lutheran Church, Rev. J. Schrader conducting them. Interment
was made in the Hooper cemetery.
