Parish Lookups

A complete list of Wigtownshire parishes is found below, with resources and links to volunteers provided. To ask for a volunteer lookup, click on the volunteer name.

Steps to making a lookup request:

1. Take time to review the information the source provides on our Glossary and Explanation page. Information about census records can be found on our Census Information page.
2. Click on the volunteer name
3. In subject line, write WIG Help Request, followed by Surname in Caps. Without a relevant subject line, your email could be mistaken for spam, and thus deleted. Take time to do this important step.
4. Offer as much specific information as possible:
  • Event type
  • surname,
  • place,
  • age,
  • spouse,
  • children
Please note: 1851 census lookups can be very labour intensive. Please try the CIS transcription first, which covers most, but not all Wig Parishes. For those not covered, you may request a lookup if a volunteer exists. However, a lookup request must be accompanied by a page reference, provided by John Roy's Heads of Household Index of the 1851 census.
Apply to only one volunteer at a time for the same information. Avoid requesting all references to a common name.

Regarding the 1851 census lookups: Most, though not all of the Wigtownshire parishes have been transcribed by Council Information Service site. The Wigtownshire Pages includes John Roy's Heads of Household Index of the 1851 census. John's index provides a page number for each surname reference, not available with the CIS transcription. Please take time to search the Heads of Household index before making your lookup request. The page number is required for all lookups.
