Last Will and Testament of Raeford Carroll In
the name of God, Amen. I, Raeford
Carroll, of the State of North Carolina and County of Sampson, of sound mind
and memory, do this the 9th day of September 1848, make published
and declare this my last Will and Testament. First:
I give and bequeath unto my children, John O Carroll, David D Carroll, Sarah A
Tatum, and Mary C Carroll the following Negroes, Virg, Henry, Bill, Caesar, and
Barbara, equally to be divided among them. Secondly,
I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah during her life the following
Negroes, Virg., Calvin, Rachel, Maria, Adeline and child Ann, George, Chaney,
Jack, Isaac, Bob and Charles and their further increase including those that
may be born during my life. And after
the death of my said wife, I give and bequeath said Negroes bequeathed to my
wife for life unto my children begotten of her body, Virg; Elizabeth, Thomas
E., Stephen S. and Jarious F Carroll, equally to be divided between them. I also give, devise and bequeath unto my
said wife during life or widowhood the lands and plantation whereon I reside
containing by estimation four hundred and fifty acres lying between Big and
Little Cabarie and after her death or subsequent marriage, I hereby authorize
and empower my Executor herein after named to sell my said lands at public
auction and the proceeds to be divided equally among my five sons, John, David,
Thomas, Stephen and James. I also give
and bequeath unto my wife, my household and kitchen furniture, stock of hogs, cattle
and sheep, one yoke of oxen, ox cart, two horses, one Gig and Harness and all
of my farming tools, ax etc and one shot gun, and what of this property remains
on hand at the death or marriage of my wife, I direct to be sold and the
proceeds divided among my younger children now four in number. If the Fiscal suit go against me, to be paid
out of the property willed to my wife. I
authorize and empower my Executor to sell the rest and residue of my estate
real and personal consisting of the tract of land whereone Pilgrim Pope resides
containing by estimation two hundred acres lying and being also between Big and
Little Charie, crop of Turpentine, sulky and horse, blacksmith tools, etc etc
to pay my debts. I
appoint John H Spearman, Executor to this my last Will and Testament. In
testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, the day and year
aforesaid. Raeford
