WILLIAM JAMES GRAY is my Great Great Grandfather.

Note from Great Uncle Ralph Gray:
EXCERPT OF RALPH GRAY'S LETTER TO MINTA FINNEY LEWIS VERNON and notes by Linda Lewis-WeissingerWilliam with his parents moved to Thomasville Tennessee. from Virginia. At the age of 26 he was an enlisted man with the Confederate army. Private Company G. 50 Reg't Tennessee Infantry appeared on the Company Muster Roll of the organization named above, for July 31 to Oct 31, 1862. Enlisted: When: Dec 4 1861 Where: Fort Donelson By Whom: Captain Beaumont Period: 1 year Then again for the Oct 6, 1862 to Feb 2, 1863 Absent: Escaped at the surrender of Donelson
            (surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant)

It was said that he swam the river to safety after being badly wounded. The cold cold water saved his life by stopping the bleeding of his badly shot-up arm. Minta Finney remembers her Grandaddy (Sam Gray) taking her to the banks of the Cumberland River and telling her stories of her Great Grandfather in the Battle of Donelson. She remembers him saying that W J's arm was shot off. Interesting to note that he had a thriving blacksmith busy later with employees.
