JOHN THOMAS LOWE was born 15 February 1830 in Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas and died 05 August 1921 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida. He is the son of WILLIAM LOWE and MARY ANN RUSSELL. He married LAURA DOROTHY MEARES who was born 14 June 1835 in Nassau, Bahamas and died 21 February 1905 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida. She is the daughter of WILLIAM MEARES and MIRIAM ROBERTS.

Captain Lowe enlisted in Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment Florida on April 15, 1862. Enlisted as a Private on April 25, 1862. He was promoted to Full Corporal 3rd Class on August 8, 1862. He was promoted to Full Sergeant 3rd Class on March 1, 1863. This rank is shown on his marked in Anona Cemetery (now Largo),Fl. On February 24, 1864 he transferred to the Confederate Navy. He served as Pilot on the Savannah (in Savannah) until Sherman arrived and Confederate forces were pushed northward. He was then again in the army because his ship was destroyed (burned) to prevent its capture. He was discharged in 1865 (due to the surrender in Virginia) and walked from Tennessee back home to Anona (now Largo), FL with an axe over his shoulder.
Additional Notes: In 1861 when the Federal Navy blockaded the Florida coast, Captain Lowe enlisted in the Tampa Coast Guard, a state organization engaged in resisting the blockade and defending against hostile operations. That Coast Guard company was later mustered into the army in 1862.
7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Gainesville, Florida, in April, 1862. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Bradford, Hillsborough, Alachua, Manatee, and Marion. During the war it served in R.C. Trigg's, Finley's, and J.A. Smith's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. The 7th took an active part in the arduous campaigns of the army from Chickamauga to Nashville, then fought its last battle at Bentonville. It sustained few casualties at Chickamauga and in December, 1863, totalled 278 men and 206 arms. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels Robert Bullock and Madison S. Perry, Lieutenant Colonel Tillman Ingram, and Major Nathan S.
