This child was the daughter of Benjamin Devane Griffin (1833 - 1898), and wife, Mary Hester Spiller (1845 - 1907).

B. D. Griffin was b. in Windsor, Bertie Co., NC and he came to Montgomery Co., TX ca. 1859. He served as Adjutant to Col. Wilkes' staff during the Civil War; was Postmaster for many years in the town of Montgomery and served as Montgomery County Clerk for more than 12 years. He married Mary Hester Spiller on December 23, 1863 in Walker Co., TX at the home of her uncle, Preston Hampden Spiller (Walker Co., TX marriage book, p. 34). She was the daughter of Dr. Samuel Fielding Spiller (1819-1859) and Elizabeth Kyle (ca. 1820-1860) of Walker Co., TX. Other children of this couple, in addition to Mary Elizabeth, were William Fielding, Virginia, Hallie, Hester and Ella.
