Harriett Elizabeth Herriman Thorpe born 1879 at Plaistow Green, Crich, Derbyshire. married Alfred Hardy 2nd June 1903 at Belper Register Office, Derbyshire. died 12 February 1960 at Shirland, Derbyshire.
I have been talking to Hilda Turner who remembers her aunt Harriet and family very well. Mildred was born with quite a severe "mental problem" and although capable of some simple tasks was over protected by Harriet who insisted on siblings doing everything for her.
She certainly was unable to leave the house without someone with her. Vinnie (Lavinia) took on the main caring role and to the chagrin of family would load up a very ancient pram with vegetables grown in the large garden plonk Mildred on top and set off with brother Roger to sell the vegetables locally.
The money was not really needed but it was Vinnie's streak of independence and a way of getting out of the house even tho it met with family disapproval. Apparently the veg were very good and a profitable round was established!
After Harriet died Vinnie looked after Mildred until too old and ill to do so when both went into a nursing home in Clay Cross. After Vinnie died in 1990 Mildred remained in the home until she died in 2003. Hope this helps Peter Patilla
