Edwin Hardy was my great grandfather's (Alfred) elder brother he was born in Shirland 1840/1 He must have been one of the smarter children born to William and Matilda for we see by the census information that he was a Druggist, Grocer and a Publican to boot.

Jane Shasby was born 1841 in Harbledown, Kent. All we know of Jane is that she was Edwin's wife. What is of interest to us is Where did they meet?

Martha Alice Braithwaite born at Fylde, Blackpool, Lancashire. 1876.

There is no evidence that Edwin and Jane had children of their own. But in the 1881 census for the dwelling of The Coach and Horses Inn Harbledown, Kent Martha Alice Braithwaite aged 5 years is shown has being the adopted daughter to Edwin and Jane.

In the 1901 census for Harbledown Edwin and Jane are shown has being Retired. Martha Alice is shown living at St Dunstan, Kent aged 24 years occupation, Companion.
