Lenawee County, Michigan

Margaret Luella (BECKEY) SPELLER

Margaret Luella (Beckey) Speller, daughter of William Henry and Margaret Beckey, was born at North Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, November 20, 1865 and departed this life June 25, 1931, aged 65 years, seven months and five days. Her early life was spent on a farm near the North Blissfield Lutheran church. Her mother departed this life when she was but three years of age, leaving her in the care of others. She was married to Norman Speller on October 23, 1884. To this union were born six children. Two sons, Millford and Herbert, preceded her in death. Three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Wellnitz and Mrs. Viola Buehrer of Palmyra township, Mrs. Florence Meyers of Adrian, and one son Merton, who resides on the homestead.

Her husband, although quite seriously injured in the automobile accident which resulted in her death, remained by her side until her departure.

Mrs. Speller’s charitable disposition toward others was such that she desired to assist the unfortunate in their need, complying with the words of her Savior, “As ye did it unto the least of these, ye did it unto Me.” She had made a home for her niece, Mrs. Harvey Pixley of Adrian, Mich. and at the time of her death was caring for her grandson Walter Speller. Her delight was in administering to the needs of her family and she was a great lover of nature. Her early married life was spent near Salina, Kansas, where many relatives and friends mourn her departure. In the year 1896 Mrs. and Mrs. Speller and family returned to Michigan, returning in a covered wagon, braving the hardships of pioneer life with fortitude and looking forward with hopeful expectations to their home in which they had resided in the part.

She was interested in the W. C. T. U. and Pomona Grange and Ladies Aid Society work, doing her part as long as her strength permitted. She leaves to mourn their loss a loving husband, four children, 15 grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, one sister, Mrs. Eliza Hines of Jackson, and a step-sister Miss Lydia Odell of Blissfield, and a large circle of relatives and friends.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the home. The Rev. J. A. Fuhrman officiated. The burial was made in Pleasant View cemetery at Blissfield.
