BITUARIES
Lenawee County, Michigan

John Calvin NORTH

NORTH – at the residence in this Village (Tecumseh) on the 30th of March at 7 AM, Mr. John Calvin North. Deceased was born January 5th, 1820, age at his death was 59 years, 2 months and 25 days. The place of his birth was Lansing, Tompkins County, New York, where he resided until he was about 30 years of age with the exception of a short time spent in Michigan in 1842. On the 5th day of February 1850 he was married to Abbey Jane Gregory. During the same year, he together with his young wife settled on a new farm in Cayuga County, New York bravely encountering the difficulties of pioneer life for the sake of securing a home and competence. But here between the extreme toil on the one hand and financial anxiety on the other, his health was so shattered that he never afterward fully recovered.

In the spring of 1860, he with his family removed to a farm near Lansing, Michigan, where they had resided but one year, when they were called upon to mourn the death of their only daughter (Amy Jemima North). On account of sickness of both himself and his family, he removed from Lansing to a farm near Parma in 1862, where he resided until his removal to Tecumseh in 1867. With the exception of one or two summers of his active life was spent on the farm.

He gave his heart to Christ in 1842 and in 1864 embraced the Adventist faith; but never formally united with a church of that denomination until September 1876, when he was baptized at a State camp meeting held at Lansing.

His health began to fail in marked manner two years ago last winter. He has suffered much and was painfully aware of his failing faculties. Yet he never murmured, but exercised an unfaltering trust in the will of God. His knowledge of the Bible was extensive, and he often expressed an earnest love for the Baptist Church in this village. By this Church his doctrinal views was more nearly represented than by any other except the one with which he was formally connected.

He leaves his wife, a son (Lucian Gregory North) and several brothers and sister, who, while they mourn his loss, rejoice in the holy memory of his earnest life and exemplary Christian character.
