Next Meeting of the Lenawee County Historical Society

The American Red Cross in Lenawee County

The April program will be at the museum on Thursday, April 25th at 6:30 p.m. It is the kick-off for our new Red Cross display in the special exhibit room. Opening remarks will commence at 6:30 p.m., and the official ribbon cutting for this new display will be at 7 p.m. The Adrian Maple Club will be the official greeters and will provide refreshments.

Red Cross dignitaries from Ann Arbor and Lansing have been invited. Local and guest speakers will offer brief comments highlighting all areas of Red Cross volunteerism, with a focus on Lenawee County.

The Lenawee branch of the Red Cross was chartered in 1917 and operated through 2011. At that time the Washtenaw County and Lenawee County offices combined and are now located at the Joe Ann Steele Insurance Center at 130 N. Main Street in Adrian. On the evening of the 25th, the Red Cross will also host a reception at their N. Main office. Those present at the museum program are invited to attend.

Young Girls; Do you know the family in the following email?

(September 27, 2012)
Hi!
My name is Carol and our family recently came across some old photographs when one of our cousins died in March. We were especially intrigued by one photo with three girls that are not identified on the back of the photo. We are hoping that you may be able to assist in identification although we know that the probability is low. I would think that the photo was taken in the late 1800's or early 1900's.

Our great grandfather was Benjamin Henry Ellis and he married Clarissa Cheever in the 1890's. I believe his father, Martin Dunn Ellis and Sarah Carpenter, had a farm in Lenawee in the 1860's (migrating from NY to MI in about 1863). He was a private in the 4th regiment during the Civil War and died in 1869 due to a war related illness. His death entry indicates that he died in Cambridge / Lenawee. Martin and Sarah had three girls, one born in 1863 and twins born in 1868. We don't think that the photo is of the girls as the two youngest don't appear to be the same age.

Clarissa's mother was Maggie Chapin whose mother was Clarissa or Celestia Corbett. Her parent's Ziba Corbett and Emma Noble and they migrated to Lenawee about 1830 along with their other children. (A brief bio is listed in the online historical book about Lenawee where it discusses their trip from Villanova, NY to Lenawee). I believe Emma's sister (Clarissa Noble) may have also married into the Robinson family of Adrian.

With all that said, we have many opportunites to be related to these three girls, but have no idea how. I saw the Adrian Historical Society website invitation to send photos so I thought I would use it as an opportunity to see if the girls can be identified.

My cousin, Kelly, and I plan to travel to Lenawee and Hillsdale in November. We can't wait to be able to visit your library and review your ancestry information.

Sincerely,
Carol (cm.king@charter.net)

NEW LENAWEE CEMETERY RESOURCE:

Crazy Cemetery Ladies of Lenawee County
I'm not sure how to categorize this web site(s) except to say that there is some good data on the web pages that the "Crazy Ladies" have created. The site provides wonderful information about certain Lenawee Cemeteries. The coverage is far from complete about Lenawee County. You will find some features that aren't generally available on the Internet. The Crazy Ladies have some obituaries, Cemetery maps and some stories about particular families. The Cemetery maps are useful because the plots and rows are laid out on the web page. Some grave locations are identified. If I had more family buried in Lenawee County rather than Fulton County, I would check it out before visiting the Cemeteries listed. No doubt about it, the Crazy Ladies have room on this web site to expand as much as they like with Lenawee County Cemeteries.

The Toledo War

This web site is as much about the establishment of the Northern Border of Ohio, as it is about the so called War between Michigan and Ohio. The web site has many photos of the existing border markers. The numerous surveys of the Ohio - Michigan contact area are detailed.

GREAT RESEARCH SITE: Michigan County Histories, http://www.hti.umich.edu/m/micounty/

- A site where you can search turn-of-the-century Michigan County History books for your ancestors. You can enter your subject to search (location or surname, for instance) and the site will return a list of books & number of hits in each book. When you pick the book to view, you can again enter your subject to search. The search will give how many hits are on the various pages of the book. Then you can view the actual page of the book where your subject is listed. You can also print a copy of your selected page. This is a good way to view History Books that you may not find in your local library & may not be able to borrow.
