Annual Meeting of the Lenawee County Historical Society

The annual meeting will be held on Thursday, June 25th at 6 p.m. at the Museum. We will be spending the evening exploring the museum’s latest exhibit Economic Entrepreneurship in Lenawee County. This is s series of five videos strategically located throughout the museum. Each 4-5 minute video covers a fascinating aspect of our county’s history: Pioneers, Railroads, the Fence Industry, the Refrigeration Industry, and Merilatt Industries. The videos were produced by Stuart MacDonald and made possible by a grant from the Merilatt Foundation.

The cost of the evening will be $6 per person and will include an hors d’oeuvres buffet and beverages. Please call the Museum at 265-6071 or stop by to let us know you are coming.

MUSEUM EXHIBITS:

NEW EXHIBIT
WORLD WAR II HOME FRONT

December 8th, 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his infamy speech, declaring war on Japan. The life of every person in Lenawee County changed that night. The men left for the war, women went to work in the war plants that produced war materials, children helped in Victory Gardens, and people scoured garages, barns, attics for scrap metal which could be turned into valuable war materials. The new exhibit World War II on the Home Front, which will show life as it was during that time, will open to our members with a reception on Sunday, September 21st, 2008 between 2 and 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited to bring old and young, members and friends.

The exhibit will feature a 1940s living room and kitchen, along with toys, sports, music, jewelry and clothing, information on the industrial growth during that time here in the county, the prisoner of war camp in Blissfield, the effects that rationing had on the people, be it gas, food, clothing. Posters depicting the various war related situations, along with the names of all the service people who lost their lives fighting for the four freedoms that President Roosevelt felt the American people should live by: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Want, Freedom of Worship, and Freedom of Fear.

Please spend some time enjoying this time in our history and visit the Lenawee Historical Museum on Sunday, September 21st between 2 and 4 for the Members Reception. This year-long exhibit can be viewed during regular museum hours: Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

NEW LENAWEE CEMETERY RESOURCE:

Crazy Cemetery Ladies of Lenawee County
I'm not sure how to categorize this web site(s) except to say that there is some good data on the web pages that the "Crazy Ladies" have created. The site provides wonderful information about certain Lenawee Cemeteries. The coverage is far from complete about Lenawee County. You will find some features that aren't generally available on the Internet. The Crazy Ladies have some obituaries, Cemetery maps and some stories about particular families. The Cemetery maps are useful because the plots and rows are laid out on the web page. Some grave locations are identified. If I had more family buried in Lenawee County rather than Fulton County, I would check it out before visiting the Cemeteries listed. No doubt about it, the Crazy Ladies have room on this web site to expand as much as they like with Lenawee County Cemeteries.

Please call or email the Museum for books or pamphlets on the
History of Lenawee County and special subjects.

GREAT RESEARCH SITE: Michigan County Histories, http://www.hti.umich.edu/m/micounty/

- A site where you can search turn-of-the-century Michigan County History books for your ancestors. You can enter your subject to search (location or surname, for instance) and the site will return a list of books & number of hits in each book. When you pick the book to view, you can again enter your subject to search. The search will give how many hits are on the various pages of the book. Then you can view the actual page of the book where your subject is listed. You can also print a copy of your selected page. This is a good way to view History Books that you may not find in your local library & may not be able to borrow.

The Footnote.com web site displays images of original American History documents. I looked at Abraham Lincoln's original notes for the Gettysburg Address and papers from the American Revolution War era. When you register a user name & password, you can leave comments and observations about the various images. This is a great web site for viewing the actual documents that make up American History.
