Next Meeting of the Lenawee County Historical Society

The Program: Thursday Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
At the Museum
The Speaker: Phyllis Rickard

Basic Genealogy: Tracing Your Roots

Phyllis Rickard, whom many of you know from her 29 years at the Lenawee County Library, will be our speaker. An avid genealogist, who has assisted hundreds in tracing their roots, she will give attendees basics of genealogy. This will include what information to record, where to look for it, and how to trace family ties using multiple resources.

Phyllis’s interest in genealogy was sparked by her learning from her grandmother about her great-great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War. “I wanted to know more about him,” Phyllis said. “That was how I started, because I wanted to know more about that one man.”

This program is free and open to the public.

MUSEUM RESOURCES

The Archives of the Lenawee Historical Museum, free and open to the public, includes the following: Adrian City Directories 1859-1998, Adrian City Tax Records 1865-1906, Lenawee County Tax Records 1840-1915, school yearbooks, cemetery records, marriage/birth/death records, tens of thousands of obituaries, scrapbooks, business ledgers, atlases and plat books, Sanborn insurance maps, histories of Lenawee County, and histories of cities and towns (Adrian, Tecumseh, Blissfield, Addison).

The Archives houses thousands of documents relating to business, government, religion, education, railroads, the military, the Grange, the Underground Railroad, prominent citizens, and many other subjects of local interest. NEW LENAWEE CEMETERY RESOURCE:

Crazy Cemetery Ladies of Lenawee County
I'm not sure how to categorize this web site(s) except to say that there is some good data on the web pages that the "Crazy Ladies" have created. The site provides wonderful information about certain Lenawee Cemeteries. The coverage is far from complete about Lenawee County. You will find some features that aren't generally available on the Internet. The Crazy Ladies have some obituaries, Cemetery maps and some stories about particular families. The Cemetery maps are useful because the plots and rows are laid out on the web page. Some grave locations are identified. If I had more family buried in Lenawee County rather than Fulton County, I would check it out before visiting the Cemeteries listed. No doubt about it, the Crazy Ladies have room on this web site to expand as much as they like with Lenawee County Cemeteries.

Michigan 4th Infantry Regiment
     http://fourthmichigan.com/

The 4th Infantry Regiment was raised from the inhabitants of cities in Lenawee County to served during the War of the Rebellion, The Civil War. This is a great site to visit for information & photos from the Civil War era.

The Toledo War
http://www.toledowar.com/

This web site is as much about the establishment of the Northern Border of Ohio, as it is about the so called War between Michigan and Ohio. The web site has many photos of the existing border markers. The numerous surveys of the Ohio - Michigan contact area are detailed.

GREAT RESEARCH SITE: Michigan County Histories, http://www.hti.umich.edu/m/micounty/

- A site where you can search turn-of-the-century Michigan County History books for your ancestors. You can enter your subject to search (location or surname, for instance) and the site will return a list of books & number of hits in each book. When you pick the book to view, you can again enter your subject to search. The search will give how many hits are on the various pages of the book. Then you can view the actual page of the book where your subject is listed. You can also print a copy of your selected page. This is a good way to view History Books that you may not find in your local library & may not be able to borrow.
