A History of the John Cears/Kear family
Mary
Ann KEAR, daughter of John Cears KEAR and Mary Ann REED, was born in
Anne Arundel County, Maryland on 6 February 1803 [note
1]. She died on 7 February 1863 in Polk County,
Iowa [note
2]. (See
footno te 1.) On 26 August 1819 she married Richard
PRING in Licking County, Ohio [note
3]. Richard was born on 19 August 1798 in Virginia [note
4]. He died on 29 April 1875 in Polk County, Iowa [note
5]. (See
footnote 2.) Mary and Richard are buried in
Franklin Cemetery. in Polk County, Iowa.
The
family migrated from Licking County, Ohio, to Champaign County, Ohio,
around 1828-1831. Other moves may have been made into
Willshire Township, Van Wert County, Ohio, and into Muncie, Indiana,
and Adams County, Indiana, before settling in Willshire Township in
1834 [note
6].
Richard
was active in forming the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Van Wert,
Ohio. On 24 October 1840 in the church's first
quarterly Meeting, he was elected as a steward, and he resigned as
steward on 13 August 1844 [note
7]. A licensed exhorter, he was the leader of a
class that met in the Pring home
[note
8].
A
final move was made by the family to Polk County, Iowa, between
February 1856 and December 1857. The move was made in spite
of
Richard's
lament that, "We have given up ever getting to Iowa. The family is all
against moving out to the west. So we think that we shall never see you
no more. . . . We are all well at this time excepting
Mary. She has not got 'stout' yet; but, is we think, on the mend in
gaining some strength and health [note
9].
Mary Ann's sister, Eleanor
Kear, married John Pring, Richard's
brother.
The children of Mary Ann and Richard Pring are listed in the left-hand column.
