Mary
Jane BAYLOR, daughter of Amelia KEAR and Frederick BAYLOR, was born 19
August 1837 in Champaign County, Ohio, and died 3 August 1903 in Mercer
County, Missouri. She married Absalom FUNKHOUSER on 6 April
1859 [note
1]. The
circumstance under which this marriage was dissolved is not known, but
she next married Cyrus DEYOE, son of James P. DEYOE and Laura CREEL, on
6 March 1867 in Lee County, Iowa [note
2]. Cyrus DEYOE was born 17 May 1840
near Saratoga Springs, Sarasota Springs County, New York, and died of
heart failure at his home in Mercer County, Missouri on 8 September
1913.
Mary Jane and Cyrus are buried in
Lowry-Snyder Cemetery, Mercer County, Missouri.
The only record on Absalom is a Bible record of the marriage and family tradition has the FUNKHOUSER's living in Virginia City, Nevada. However, their only child, Mary Amelia FUNKHOUSER was born in California.
Cyrus was a farmer when he enlisted on 28 September 1861 at Salem, Iowa with Company D, 14th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry. At the time of his Army enlistment, Cyrus was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a sandy complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He participated in the battles of Fort Donaldson and Shiloh and was given a disability discharge on 25 October 1862 at Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa [note 3].
Regarding his disability, Cyrus was granted a pension for a gun-shot wound--right fore-finger shot off, and hand disabled entirely in the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. However, in an affidavit Cyrus wrote, "I was on the picket guard when I received my wound. It was by accident. I set my gun down and it was very dark and when I went to take it again I caught it by the bayonet to bring it to shoulder arms and it went off and it shot me in the hand taking off my right-hand fore finger, and my hand is nearly stiff. This was near Pittsburg Landing, Tenn. about April the 12th I think. , , , and if you have any other statement, that of 1865 was made by an attorney and HE made the mistake. [note 4]"
Cyrus
first married 17-year-old
Amanda LOOMIS, widow of Andrew Loomis, on 12 February 1863 in Lee
County, Iowa [note
5].
Andrew served in Cyrus' unit and died from a disease. Cyrus
divorced Amanda in September 1863. After the divorce, Cyrus
married Mary Jane BAYLOR, also in Lee County, Iowa. In 1882,
or 1883, they moved to Mercer County
Missouri. After her death, he married Anna INMAN, daughter of
Henry P. INMAN and Joan SLOAN [note
6].
In
1894 Cyrus was ordained
as in the Fairhaven Missionary
Baptist church and continued in this calling until his death.
Mary
Jane's sister, Elizabeth
Ellen BAYLOR, married Cyrus' brother John DEYOE.
Another sister, Harriet
Rebecca BAYLOR, married another brother, Joseph DEYOE.
Child of Mary Jane and Absalom Funkhouser and adopted by Cyrus
Deyoe:
Mary Amelia FUNKHOUSER was
born in
California on 3 February 1860, and died 5 January 1942. She
married Francis Elliot WADE on 26 January 1878 in Wayne County, Iowa.
Mary Amelia and Francis Wade had
three children:
1. Cyrus Aaron WADE, born 12 April 1879 married Annie F. --?--. [note 7]
2. Eliza Jane WADE, born 04 September 1883,
married Fred A. MARING.
3. Theodore Francis WADE, born in 1881, married Annie Lutitia MOORE. [note 8]
