Margaret
Ann BAYLOR, daughter of Amelia KEAR and Frederick BAYLOR, was
born 16
May 1840 in Champaign County, Ohio, and died in
Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas on 6 March 1920.
She married
Peter EBE in Utica, Van Buren County, Iowa on 22
January 1865.
Peter was born 23 February 1836 to Joseph EBE in Wayne
County, Iowa.
The name of his mother is not known.
Peter died 8
January 1885 in Great Bend, Kansas. Both are buried in Great
Bend, Kansas.
Peter's first wife, Elizabeth WINTERS, died on 9 December 1860, only one month after the birth of a son, John EBE, on 9 November 1860.
Following
the marriage
of Margaret and Peter, they lived and farmed in Jefferson County, Iowa,
in 1880, and in Walnut Township, Wayne County, Iowa, in 1880.
In April 1881 they moved the family to Great Bend, Kansas.
After the death of Peter, Margaret moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1896. She ran a boarding house in Hutchinson to support her children. It is likely that at least three of her children were still at home when their father died. It is also likely that Margaret's sister, Frances Isabella BAYLOR was a big help in the months following Peter's death.
Margaret applied for a Civil War Widow's pension, was granted $25.00 a Month until her death.
Peter
was in
Company D of the 14th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. He
enlisted on 1 October 1861 at Salem, Iowa, and mustered in 2 November
1861.
On the Company Muster Roll, he was listed as "AWOL" from the time of
his capture to his transfer to Benton Barracks. Seemingly,
his company was informed of his whereabouts only when the transfer was
made. From March 1863 he was listed "present" at roll-call.
He
was taken
prisoner at the battle of Pittsburgh, Tennessee.
Captured at Shiloh on 6 April 1862, he was held as a prisoner of war until 28 May 1862 at Montgomery, Alabama. He was sent as a paroled prisoner to Benton Barracks near St. Louis, Missouri, and released March 1863. He mustered out of the service on 14 November 1864, at Davenport, Iowa, and two months later he married Margaret.
Peter
was twice denied
a pension for illnesses aggravated while he was in service,
although he must have been in poor health for years before his
death. His death was
attributed to "Inflammatory Rheumatism," but subsequent family Medical
history indicates the cause may have been Congenital Polycstic Kidney.
Peter was five feet, eight inches tall, was dark-complexioned, had hazel-colored eyes, and at the time of entering military service his hair was black.
Margaret and Peter Ebe had six children:
1. Harriet Frances EBE
2. Laura Belle EBE.
3. Mary Ellen EBE born 17 April 1872 in Van Buren Co., Iowa. She married Ed GARDNER who died before 1920. Mary was living with her mother in 1920 [note].
4. Minnie Amelia EBE born 23 March 1875 in Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas, and died 12 June 1953 . She married Albert PURSEL 26 November 1896 in Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas. Albert was born 5 February 1863 in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, and died 9 June 1932 in Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas.
5. Frederick Joseph EBE, born and died 5 Dec 1878.
6. Erla May EBE born 17 May 1880. She married James Arthur PRATT. He was born 24 February 1901 in Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas, and died 13 April 1951 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. He is buried in the Eastside Cemetery, Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas. Note: 1920 Census, Town of Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas, No. 716.
