A History of the John Cears/Kear family
Elizabeth
Ellen BAYLOR, daughter of Amelia KEAR
and
Frederick BAYLOR, was
born 5 February 1843, Ohio, probably Champaign County, and died 7 June
1987, Van Wert, County,
Iowa. She married
John Henry DEYOE, son of James P. DEYOE and Laura CREEL, on 11 April
1865 in Winchester, Van Buren County,Iowa.
John was born on 28 January 1838, Saratoga, New York, and
died 13 July
1917, Mercer County, Missouri.
Elizabeth is buried in the Dibble Cemetery, Van Buren County,
Iowa.
John enlisted from Big Mound, Iowa, on 28 September 1861 in Company D, 14th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. He was five feet seven and one-half inches tall, light complexioned, gray eyes, and light hair. After being promoted to 8th Corporal on 12 April 1864, he was discharged on 5 November 1864 at Davenport, Scott County, Iowa [note].
John
applied for and
received a pension for an injury to the right ankle on a March from
Fort Henry to Fort Donaldson, Tennessee in February 1862. He
also was
taken prisoner at the battle of Shiloh, and a chronic diarrhea
contracted early in service was aggravated while being held in Southern
prisons for three or four months. He received $30.00 a month
pension from the Government.
Elizabeth's sister, Harriet
Rebecca BAYLOR, married John's brother, Joseph M. DEYOE.
Another sister, Mary
Jane BAYLOR, married another brother, Cyrus DEYOE.
John was a member of the
Baptist church, and the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
Elizabeth and John had one child:
Joseph Francis DEYOE
