Streetcar Track on Main Street in 1873

Few Centennial visitors to Dallas next year would place this street scene of 1873. It is Main street looking west from about Akard street, with the dome of the old courthouse barely visible in the middle background. The tracks in the foreground are those of the single, mule-drawn streetcar which ran from the Houston & Texas Central depot, one mile east to the courthouse square. Trees along the ravine, between Main and Commerce street, seen on the left, caused the wooden buildings on the south side of Main to be built on stilts in many cases.
