Henry Clay Burton - Vernon County Partisan

Henry Clay Burton moved with his parents from Paris, Monroe County, Missouri to Cedar County before 1860. He became a Confederate soldier and was a guerrilla in Vernon Co. between enlistments, as were many of the Vernon Co. men. He was an orderly sergeant while in the CSA. He enlisted in April 1861 at Vernon Co., Missouri for six months under Col. D. C. Hunter, then reenlisted  in January 1862.  He served under Generals Rains, Price and Marmaduke during his service. He fought in a number of battles, including Carthage, Wilson's Creek, Lexington, Prairie Grove and Helena.

He was captured operating as a guerrilla under Henry Taylor in Vernon County on 14 April 1862. Henry Clay was charged with stealing horses from Union sympathizers, probably for use by the Confederate Army. He was tried at Ft. Scott, Kansas, and sent to prison at Rock Island, Illinois. He was later exchanged and returned to the CSA. He survived the war.

Henry Clay was born in Madison Co., Mo., on 27 Jun 1844 to John Burton and Patsy Schumaker,  then the family moved to Paris, Monroe Co. , then later to Cedar Co. After the war, he went back to Monroe Co. He married Sarah Catherine Brown on 6 May 1868 in Monroe County. They had 10 children.

Henry passed away on 25 Jun 1932 in St. Maries, Benewah Co., Idaho at the home of a daughter.
