This is a full page article from the Elizabeth Herald which gives historical information concerning the Elizabeth Packet Company, the exact date of this article is unknown to me but I assume it is late 1800's / early 1900's. I base my assumption on the dates of 1848/49 from the article as being when the Elizabeth Packet Company was first organized and that this article was written " a little more than half a century since the Pittsburgh and Elizabeth Packet Company was organized."

I obtained this article by taking photos of the full page from the collection of William Caulkett of Elizabeth, PA. and then piecing the various photos together to help make a readable article. In order to make the article easier to read I have posted the complete page and then each of the columns as separate photos. Click on each photo individually in order to see a larger version of that photo.

Full page except for some ads which ran along the right side. From collection of William Caulkett of Elizabeth, PA 2014. This is the original picture of the Packet Boat Elizabeth that evolved into the picture on the home page of this web site. Photo is dated 1900 with the Steamer NELLIE WALTON and West Elizabeth in background.  JW first mentions working on the Packet ELIZABETH during August 1887 and then again including March and May 1898.

This picture was part of a calendar produced by the McKeesport, PA Hospital as a fund raiser in 1994. I would like to note that McKeesport Hospital thanked THE DAILY NEWS [McKeesport] and the McKeesport HERITAGE CENTER for the assistance in the production of this centennial calendar.

Packet Company Pass

This "Season's Pass" for the Pittsburgh & Elizabeth Packet Company is dated 1899, which is the year a new company was formed, Monongahela and Ohio River Transportation Company, which owned the Packet Elizabeth.  The pass is signed by the President of this line, J. M. Boyd who was a cousin of Bertha Lynch, wife of J. W. Lynch. J. M. Boyd was a major partner in the Monongahela and Ohio River Transportation Company,

The Packets ELIZABETH and I. C. WOODWARD were involved in an impromptu race for the next lock, this photo is the result.  Neither Captain would back away so they sat this way for several hours until one of the owners ordered his Captain to back away.

This is a descripition of the above photo from the 1950 edition of Way's Packet Boat Directory
