James Franklin Ayars (1841-1916) was born in Missouri and later moved to Wisconsin with his parents. After serving with the U. S. Army in the Civil War, he moved to Junction City, Kansas, where in 1866 he married Catherine Mitchell, and where all of their children were born. Catherine, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Johnston) Mitchell. In Junction City, James owned a farm and later a drug store, and was also a probate judge. Several of James's family also located nearby in Davis (now Geary) and Riley Counties. The family moved to Oklahoma Territory in 1889 for the land rush, and settled in Lincoln County. James was partner in a general store, held various county positions, and was also a bank president in Prague. James and Catherine then spent the rest of their lives in Tulsa, where they lived near some of their daughters.
