Jacob was recently discharged as a Corporal from active duty from the United States Marine Corps and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal on October 9, 2003, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations as tank loader, Company A. As several tanks in his platoon became mired in muddy terrain along their axis of advance, Corporal Bishop provided security for the recovery operation, repeatedly firing at enemy forces attempting to encircle the platoon.
