Juanita Dumas Heyerman here. Well, being born in 1954 I was only 6 when we moved away from Berendo. I don't remember any dates in a cooler at the Eldridges. Whenever I'd go next door Mrs Eldridge would give me a stick of gum out of the pocket of her apron, which hung on the back of a door in the kitchen. My friends were Colleen Swenson and Marty Chenier and Cathy Murray. I was scared of Colleen's boxer or bull dog or whatever he was, and was amazed that she wasn't afraid of him. I remember going to the Murray house to say the rosary, but I thought it was a weekly thing, not for a particular person. Another memory is of the pool at Centinela (which I pronounced in my head Simmonella). High walls that were sort of light blue and shimmery, and open at the top so the light and sound of the water came in - was that the passage from the dressing rooms? I remember the smell as you walked along there. It must have been chlorine, but to me it was half terror of the water and half awe at being with the big kids.
