From: Ruth Mayle To: Dumas Subject: 11208 Berendo Ave. Date: Wednesday, January 20, 1999 6:11 PM Hello John, I really don't qualify for your Berendo list, since I moved from our home in 1940 when I married. My parents continued to live there until the early 50's when they moved to Van Nuys. They are both deceased now. I can tell you a little about our home and some of the neighbors. My father (with NO building experience) built our house in about 1924 It was a small bungalow 2 bedroom par for the times. Some years later he built a small brick fish pond in the back yard, and we had peach , apricot and fig trees, chickens and rabbits. I remember my childhood as being wonderful. The neighbors were all friendly and although there were not many girls my age on our block, I was always part tomboy and enjoyed playing baseball and football in the street with the Magadelano, Sayles and Hisey boys. School was Woodcrest and Washington. I was in the last class at Washington that included the 7th grade. As we progressed that year of schooling was dropped so Washington became a 10th - 12th Highschool. Don't know what it is now. The neighbors I remember on the east side of the street were the Sheldons, Mrs. Harper, us (Hammond) Strunk, (which became a rental and then sold), can't remember the next house, and then a vacant lot. The vacant lot was great fun, as certain times of the year it had grass or weeds that grew 2-3 ft tall and we would crawl around in it and make "roads", play hide and seek and whatever we could think up. On the West side was the Magadelano, Hisey, Sayles, Miller (he used to have a garden -on the side of his house-to the sidewalk and grew vegetables.) Beach, and farther down the street were the Kings and Mitchels. Across from the Magdaleno home on the W. corner were the Behrs, and across from them was the Dillons. When I married we rented the little house the Dillons built in back of their corner house, which actually was on Berendo .. We stayed their until my husband went into the Navy WW2. Remember going to the little market W. on 112th st at Budlong. Also the market on Vermont and 112th. Haven't been in the neighborhood for about 20years--know it changed drastically. Often wonder if our home is still there. When my parents sold, they sold to friends with the same name--Hammond!! My memories of my chilhood on Berendo are most pleasant. Keep in touch Ruth
