Stories: #1 The Robinsons had the first TV set on the block. It was small, but we sat right nose-up to it, in a little cluster,
blocking the front doorway. This is where we all met Hoppy and Lucky and California (was that Gabby Hayes,
or an incredible simulation?) on Saturday mornings and afternoons. How about that episode where Lucky is
tied up in the owlhoots' cabin with a band of wet rawhide tightening around his skull, screens alternating
between desperate, struggling Lucky and galloping, outlaw-beset Hoppy. Will he make it in time to rescue
unlucky Lucky from the migraine to end all migraines?!?!! Oh yeah, and Larry had a dachshund, named Blitzer.

Stories: #1 Our next door neighbors on the north were the Sharps, and on the
south the Eldridges, an elderly couple who gave me and my little sister
Juanita dates from a cooler cabinet one of the few times we went inside
their house, and they had a parakeet, or maybe two, that flew around
free in their living room. They had a dicondra lawn that felt great to
roll around on, but we weren't supposed to. - Tony Dumas

#1 Rainer's little sister (me and Al's age) was Phyllis, and their big old kitten-eating German Shepherd was Butch, the Wunderdog. - M. Dumas
#2 The short vignette about Phyllis is that she was a tiny little blond girl in a frilly little dress and that Butch the german shepard was big. Its was just a picture of comedic contrast to see her fearlessly calling the kitten eating dog saying "here Butchee, Butchee" beckoning him with her little index finger, trying to get the dog back in their yard. We referred to Adolf as "Uncle" Adolf probably because he was an uncle to Beverly. I remember Adolf sharpened hand saws. Stories: #1 Jerry was older than us(nineteen, twenty?)and, at least during his later tenure (1949?), had a swell-looking car parked at the sidewalk end of The Jerries'(for lack of a remembered surname) down-curving driveway. Theirs was one of the houses on the southeast quarter of the block whose front lawn met the sidewalk in a retaining wall. The Asmussens' was the lowest (maybe a foot and a half high?) and down near Imperial the Hoovers and Wishoosens had pretty high ones, so you rarely went up on their lawns. The Jerries also had a nice tree (a sycamore?) on their parkway, so their wall was a pleasant place to sit and adjust your skates on a summer afternoon. Jerry's mother is a shadowy figure in my memory, as if she showed her face on the front porch once or twice, possibly chewing Jerry out or defending him to a neighbor. I picture her not actually holding a cocktail glass in one hand and a cigarette holder in the other, but as someone who undoubtedly had those things inside the house. I remember Jerry as a wild-teenager type, but then I was probably five when he left the block. It seems to me he had an auto accident at some point, possibly missing the entrance to their driveway under the influence of demon beer?? (I may be making that up. I also have a dim but persistent memory of a gaily lighted musical streetcar passing in front of our house one night around 1945.) I'm sure someone a little older out there remembers more about Jerry. You know who you are. (by Mike D.)

Stories: #1 Mr. Hoover had a little mother-in-law house in back where his daughter may have lived on occasion. Dee Dee may have been Hoover's granddaughter. She was diabetic and couldn't eat cake. At her own birthday she had to eat prunes. - various contributors
Stories: #2 I have a single memory of DeeDee (other than that she ate fruit at her birthday party). One Sunday she invited me to play house with her (write your own story, but remember we were only about seven)in her playhouse in the Wishoosens' back yard. It was a big bore for me (I'm sure you made a lovely wife and mother, DeeDee, but I'm shallow and self-centered--you could've done better), and I would probably not remember it to this day, except for one thing: When I finally broke away, I returned home to find that the entire gang had gone off to see an Abbott and Costello double feature ("Ride 'em Cowboy" and "Keep 'em Flyin'", I kid you not, this is the sort of thing I remember. I told you about my being shallow.) While I was still recovering from the blow of this news, I made that terrible mistake you sometimes make as a kid where you wonder aloud what you'll do now, and my mother put me to work right away practicing penmanship! Talk about a right to sing the blues. (by Mike D.)

#2 That liquor store you said was closed down, is that the one that we used to
dash across Imperial to for afterthought stuff like ginger ale for New
Year's, etc? That's where Dave and I got that hilarious cymbal-clanging
monkey for Tone when he was little (you wound him up and he clanged and
hopped and flung himself off the edge of the table--the monkey, not
Tone). I may have gone there more than the rest of you, because it
carried a couple of candies for which I developed an adolescent weakness
(not that it took a lot of developing, I being constructed almost
entirely of candy in those days). - M. Dumas
